- More than 1,500 people have been confirmed dead after a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked southeast Turkey and Syria early Monday, leveling several buildings as people slept in their beds.
The devastating toll has continued to rise as rescuers frantically search for survivors trapped under the rubble.
Thousands more people in both countries were injured, officials said.
The earthquake’s center struck an area about 20 miles from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital 60 miles from the Syrian border, according to the US Geological Survey. It was centered 11 miles deep and was followed by a strong 6.7-magnitude aftershock about 10 minutes later.

I'm a Turk and I'm so sorry for everyone. This is not a religious event, please do not provoke it in this way. Everyone there is a soul. Empathize. Support aid campaigns for clothing, food and humanitarian needs. Since it was in winter conditions for TURKEY AND SYRIA, people were trapped under very cold rain and snow. A lot of our friends and families that we know and don't know are in ruins. Please pray for all of them and do not provoke, thank you everyone for your support.

This city is in a very beautiful spot between the water and the mountains. I hope a lot of help will be coming very quickly to aid in all the ways the people need at this very sad moment in time in both Turkey and Syria. My sincere condolences to all who have lost family and friends.

I lived through the Loma Prieta earthquake that happened in 1989 in Central California, and I will never forget what happened to the poor people who were driving on the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge when it hit....☹

Looks like they were hit by a nuke. The devastation and destruction is unbelievable and very shocking. Hard to watch. May the world BOND together and stand UNITED and help Turkey. Those people need more help then ever for they shouldn't battle this alone. I know the death is in the thousands and people who have lost or waiting to hear from or find their loved ones are feeling great pain and sorrow. This is a major change in History around the world and affects us all. May those who survived find courage, strength, compassion, and guidance to heal.

I couldn't imagine being alive in one of those buildings when half the ones next to you are all gone. I would never feel comfortable again living in such a place, we are about to see so many displaced people, my condolences.

I don't watch the news at all but my co-worker just told me about this. Absolutely horrific; so devastating to even watch this. I can't even begin to fathom what these people are going thru. Hearts & prayers go out to all the victims & 🙏 for all the survivors safety & well-being. Hopefully countries come together to help them instead of concentrating on war.

No, not seconds. There were 2 huge earthquakes and 120 other ones over the course of 2 days. The buildings fell at different times.

These buildings are near underpass, must have developed this underpass in recent years, which might have weaken the foundation of the buildings , collapse on both corner of it, I feel this cud be one of the cause of immediate fall.

Such a devastating earthquake I was alive for the 1994 Northridge earthquake, which was a 6.7 and we had the same problem with a lot of collapsed buildings. But we were lucky that the number of dead wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been. I know what they’re going through since I’m from Los Angeles and I’m still living here. I know a lot of people here are preparing just in case and I’m definitely one of them. So, my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this catastrophe. Thankfully there’s a lot of countries sending aid. We need to get as many people out and the most immediate need food, shelter and medical aid. I’m also a perioperative RN. Anyone who’s able should donate what they can. But they’re going to need a lot of other stuff as well like clothes, diapers, etc.

Makes one wonder how many buildings need to be condemned.
Something doesn't look right to me. Praying that many will be rescued.
The issue is now with other buildings as well, they won't stand too long and they are not safe either.
Japan shall give the consultancy to Turkey for the standards to make buildings absorb the shocks.
Buildings with more than 3 floors in this area are too risky
They know how to build safe buildings for quakes, they don't built because of the expenses.
This area is hit by earthquakes 60 daily, however this was a mega earthquake of 7.8! Then followed by a 7.5 6.9 and 7.4 in matter of hours, they had 120 tremors since the big one in less than 24 hours.
I think turkey should consider moving it's population away from this area use it for other purposes.

Turkey knows how to build earthquake safe homes,most new high rise buildings in big cities are earthquake safe. Also this area is on a well known fault line.the strength and the duration of multiple earthquakes made it as deadly as it is.

Exactly! This is very inconsistent with a natural earthquake! Even the way some of the collapsed buildings look like turned to dust is reminiscent of a directed energy weapon or other geoengineering technology. This is not natural or normal and I am sure structural engineers and architects would be able to provide the scientific evidence. The collapsed buildings look like the 911 artificially and intentionally demolished buildings. This was part of global cabal infighting and war for power and control over the financial system and planet . Unfortunately, little people are worthless to these serpents and their overlords.

I am so sorry to see this happen in a populated area. My deepest and sincere condolences for those who lost friends and family.
In this context, I can think of one thing. Why do people fight senselessly in our world when such a disaster happens, they help each other. And when it calms down and the affected states get back to relative normalcy, they'll be back on the battlefield against each other again.

This is disastrous. The first jolt at 7.8 weakened the structures and the aftershock at 7.5 caused the most damage.

I see a lot of the damage, at least in this video, happened along a freeway. This suggests that the continuous vibration from passing traffic weakened these structures beforehand.
Really? And left all the roads completely unaffected! This was a targeted geoengineering attack using direct energy weapons and other secret technology. They should also be checking any radiation levels in case underground nukes were used .

Well this is a big city, so yes, it's crowded. The US has a lot of space and that's just not the case for many places in the rest of the world. If you compare the numbers, you will see that the US is a very sparsely populated country and you are still freaking your brains out that you will be invaded by immigrants.. There should be better city planning yes but unfortunately with so many people and so many buildings needed and the greed of the contractors this is what you get.

It is so hard to think about those who must be trapped and hurt freezing with no food and water.....as the building are piles rather than completely flat there is room under it all and I can imagine there must have been a fairly large number of people who survived for at least a little while after the shaking stopped.

Having lived through an 8.9 earthquake that lasted 3 minutes in Chile, I cannot help but think how our anti seismic building codes saved millions of lives. I hope Turkey will start helping retro-fit older buildings and pass stricter building codes. My heart is broken for Turkey today since I have 2 very dear friends there.
they surely have to implement strict anti-eartquake measures and enhancements in all their buildings now. They're under a big tectonic gap. This was sure to happen sometime

This brief video from a drone shows many buildings reduced to rubble. Wishing the people of this region the best in these difficult times.
After the dusts have settled, so to speak, authorities should investigate and make a profile of the collapsed buildings, this is to ascertain accountabilities of "ill constructed structures" considering that not all buildings suffered major damages and only some were totally demolished while others located right beside them are still standing perfectly. Corruption smells in the air, my heart goes to the victims.
What i want to know is who are the contractors of those buildings that collapse? They should be held ACCOUNTABLE!
If it was built in a strong foundation, those buildings will not just collapse like that! As you can see, there were other buildings that remained standing. ACCOUNTABILITY!
