Motorized canoeing

  • This is a canoe motor mount project that I did just because I had the motor. It's more of a backup motor just in case I get caught down stream of in a situation where I could use a bit more power. The 1 hp motor weighs 13.5 pounds without fuel so it doesn't really get in the way as far as weight goes. I know that I should tie it down in case of a flip over.

I also built a similar mount for a Old Town Guide, using 2x4 for a Suzuki 2.5 outboard. Lasted 3 trips before the 2x4 ripped in half and I had to catch the motor as it was trying to get away. I now have my mount made out of 3/16" steel angle.

You can re-inforce both sides of contacts with aluminum and use 4 bolts to piece both sides together. It is better to use treated 2x4. It is more sturdy.

Holy smokes that old 1 HP is as fast as my 4hp Yamaha on a lite 14' boat.

That was fully wound out. The tank would hold about 7km of fuel fo that Canoe. Maybe .7 liters.

I just made my mouth today for my canoe. The longest part was drilling two holes on a 2 1/2 4x1 weld flat. No drilling on the the canoe. It's secured by two superstrut beam clamp. Can easily be adjusted forward, and backward. Had to buy nuts and bolts, otherwise it would've just cost under $15. Can't wait to try it this weekend.

Just finished mine for my canoe and it came out great thanks for sharing ..I used 3/8" 16 wing nuts instead makes it easier to to tighten...my husband is thinking of doing something like this for his kayak but we'll see...

Steering is pretty good as long as you keep the motor close to the boat haul. Actually you can also get your speed up another couple miles an hour by shifting your weight to the front as well as making sure the motor sits level. Hope this helps.

Nice setup. First time I've sen your setup and amazed how close our designs are. I worried about strength and went the more exotic route of using Oak. I have mine setup for electric but really like your gas solution too! Very impressed with the speed.

I got a same motor. it was given as broken motor. I repaired it and running and it is funny that I was making exactly same thing without knowing this video. It is good japanese motor.

That is funny since this motor was also a freebie that I had to fix. The carb really just needed to be taken apart and cleaned up.

If you do that in Wisconsin, you have just added the requirement to register the boat with the DNR... any motorized boat (or sail boat longer than 12foot) requires registration (pay a fee and apply the stickers).

I reinforced a similar design with plywood...screwed and glued to the 1x4 then of course clamp the motor onto that.

I did basically the same thing with my canoe motormount same 2 x 4 setup....THIS WILL NOT LAST!!!! mine worked for about 5 trips until the torque on the 2 x 4 started splitting it. currently looking for a scrap piece of hardwood, DON'T USE PINE!

Any steering problems? I'm about to do the same thing with a two man kayak and a 40lb Minn-Kota electric. I plan(ned) on making a mount at the absolute rear, but it looks like you can steer OK doing it your way?
