well possible that he is taking singing lessons. Elton John, Sting and many others do/did it once they got older and, after a while, realised that their voice had changed and needed some serious training if they wanted to stay in business

As for preserving the pitch, that's impossible with age whether you have a vocal coach or not. Your range naturally diminishes with age. It's the aging process and it's inescapable. That's why they change the keys of their old songs to match their current vocal ranges. The fans couldn't care less, because most people can't audibly recognize the difference between Bb and A. It's not as if somebody is watching and saying, "Hey he's singing a semitone lower than on the record. Singers have always used this approach, from Sinatra, to Elvis, to Paul Mccartney, to Elton John, to Billy Joel, etc., etc., etc. There's no way at his age, for instance, that Billy Joel can still sing Say Hoodbye to Hollywood in the key of C. So he drops it a whole tone from C to Bb, and he's good as gold. He'll eventually dropped it to A, the longer he continues to perform. However, these guys have always utilized the services of of vocal coaches their entire careers. Only now it's more to help preserve what they have left of their voices. Utilizing the diaphragm more takes some of the strain off the throat. Also singing in head voice, as opposed to full voice, is another way. Singing shorter staccato notes is another way. But definitely, you hit it right on the head because Father Time catches up with all of us.

I've always been a huge DLR fan , from the very first album, all through his solo stuff, and the last ever VH Album ADKOT , he sounded fantastic. He's always been more of a studio singer with many nuances to his voice. That's why Ted Templeman wanted him. He knew that Dave often just winged it live, but he had all the BEST VH lyrics...every and that goose bump double voice scream that NO ONE ever heard before VH. The thing Dave did that gets his haters going, and it's true, HE NEEDED TO STOP 'REACHING' for that high register. it doesn't work, If he stays in his middle register, he's still more fun to watch than just about anyone else. ;) ;)

Its hard for Dave to stay focused I think he's an extreme ADD case even now when he uses his range and his natural Awsome blues tones and is focused and trying he sounds great and can still hit notes on 1984 Drop Dead legs surprisingly well and killed feel your love tonight very thankful I got to hear it. Sometimes he goes overboard on the Diamond Dave routine and blows of the vocals still very entertaining though which is more than we can say for Van Hagar

Yes Dave can sing ! He’s sounded great live in the past. I just think he chose not to stay in range and force his voice. All the booze and drugs at past shows affected performance. Listen to live boot leg shows from 78-81 . He sounded awesome
Its hard for Dave to stay focused I think he's an extreme ADD case even now when he uses his range and his natural Awsome blues tones and is focused and trying he sounds great and can still hit notes on 1984 Drop Dead legs surprisingly well and killed feel your love tonight very thankful I got to hear it. Sometimes he goes overboard on the Diamond Dave routine and blows of the vocals still very entertaining though which is more than we can say for Van Hagar
youre right,he had a FABULOUS voice but often sold short cos of booze drugs.ciggs didnt help.dont get me wrong i love dave always will.seems a moment he was struggling physically,stood by the speaker 😢 his back is pretty shot from what i gather from roth shows.
