Creepiness is definitely the biggest 🚩 because it can unfortunately be found in any industry and its always unprofessional
and ego. idk what it is about tattoo artists (especially men) but they have crazy egos sometimes and people like that are often not open to criticisms, changes, and requests
Yup. I’ve been careful about who I ask for an apprenticeship. A girl I went to school with got a “apprenticeship” at a local shop. Took 4k from her and after she confronted him about sexually harassing her and the clients he fired her. Lots of douche bag scummy tattooers out there that Should’ve never been introduced to this industry. If there were state regulations for apprentices thousands of tattooers across the country would be in jail right now
My grandfather actually was a tattoo artist and has no tattoos, he started tattooing in the 70s when it was more taboo. His reasoning for having no tattoos was out of respect for his mother who hated them 😅
Well he could've gotten a hidden tattoo so she wouldn't be able to see it. That way he would have a tattoo and she wouldn't know.
@@bobbysfacts1981 I feel like saying what someone should have done with their own body is kind weird behavior?
This gives me hope as someone who wants to do art but doesn’t want it on me.
@@bobbysfacts1981The point of "respect" is not to hide something they don't like from them but not to do it at all.
@@xxxCHLOE1004xxx"could've gotten" NOT "should have." That's the difference between a suggestion and shoving you agenda down someone else's throat.
I got tattooed at home by an amazing artist who made my favorite tattoo ever. We booked a session before the Covid lockdown so it had to be rescheduled for next year. She lost her workplace as the tattoo shop was closed due to financial issues. She and her husband both are artists, they dedicated a whole room for an at home salon, decorated the room with their paintings, had all the proper equipment and even those convertible chairs. The at home thing definitely depends on the person you get a tattoo from and the level of trust, but it’s still much more safe to go to the shop
To anyone getting a sternum tattoo, I was able to keep my top on for the whole tattoo, just lifted slightly. If you're being asked to take your top off, question why.
All of my friends get stickers for their nipples if they say they're more comfortable just taking the shirt off. The rest gets their tops taped at the top - happened when I had a sidepiece. I don't see any reason to be nude during a tattoo that has nothing to do with breasts or the general bra area
True--but also wear a black shirt or something you don't care about. You can be super fastidious about wiping during the tattoo process, but if they're working in a tight area, you might get some ink on your clothes.
My artist will ask me to move my clothing, or ask if I care if it gets ink on it. If I care, she suggests removing it or putting something over it. But I dress with consideration for the placement and session lol
A personal perspective on tattoo artists without tattoos. I have autism and have an intense aversion to anything being on my skin that’s not ’meant’ to be there, including pen ink, stamps, tattoos, etc. Its difficult to explain why but I just know I would absolutely not be able to cope if I had a tattoo. I love tattoos as a concept and am pretty interested in the world of tattooing and consume a lot of tattoo related content and would love to be able to get them myself but I just know it’s not something I’ll ever be able to do. I’m not a tattoo artist but sometimes I think about it because I just really love everything about tattooing and the art and community. I think that maybe if I was a tattoo artist I would do something I have seen some other people do, which is get tattooed with a machine that has no ink in it, only water, so that I could understand the pain and sensations of a tattoo without actually getting one on my skin for real. I would like to think that if I was a tattoo artist in this scenario I wouldn’t get judged too much for not having tattoos, especially after explaining my reasoning, but you never know especially because there’s a lot of conflicting opinions out there about it
100%, I think your reasoning is completely valid. Not every situation is black or white, and a lot of tattoo artists without tattoos are *assumed* to (1) not be able to take the pain, (2) not want to express their art on themselves, etc., when in reality, there can be many valid reasons why a person doesn't have tattoos but wants to tattoo others. I feel like you are completely valid as well.
I have autism, and this was my immediate thought as to how someone could have an intense *specific* passion for tattooing but not necessarily have tattoos themself. It definitely isn’t a black and white situation, like the comment above me said.
man, your confidence in these videos have grown so much in the last year. Its been so much fun watching these videos! hope the switch to the tattoo shop has trasferred well. Its inspired me to try and make the same switch.
So much! I can see it too. Glad you feel like you can do the same ❤
I’m currently in the middle of a full traditional back piece, and my artist is super professional and courteous. Always has covers, privacy screens, etc. He’s super attentive, lets me take breaks if/when I need to. He even sent me a whole separate email during the design process asking if I was comfortable with the tattoo extending below the belt line, and reassuring me that he could absolutely make it work if I didn’t want to be tattooed there. Super super considerate and kind. It’s so sad there are so many artists who treat their clients poorly :( my first tattoo was done by a douchebag, just a horrible experience altogether, and that experience really stuck with me through the years - even as I went on to meet and work with different, nicer artists.
The creep factor is a huge deal. As an adult woman who isn’t comfortable around men alone, communication is key. My artists always tells me before he moves much closer to me or might rest/steady his arm on a part of my body. I will say I have absolutely sought out female tattoo artists, but when you find an artist who’s work you immediately fall in love with, that’s who you want to work with. The make or break for me is respecting that open communication.
I got my whole lower belly tattooed in full color, and was in so much pain I was shivering uncontrolably. I wanted to leave when the blackwork was done because I couldn't stand that pain anymore. My tattoo artist told me he HAD to finish because of artistic integrity. I should've walked out, he cared more about his art than my comfort. I pushed through, several more hours. I could feel the needle was going in at an odd angle, but didn't say anything because I might be wrong. The tattoo healed terribly, big spots completely gone in the first few months.
I'm a pushover, I even tipped him. I don't think I'll get a big tattoo again in a while.
I agree with all of these red flags. I had two, not great experiences with tattoo artists. I had one artist, who did beautiful work on me and in the second session, for a second tattoo, she went on and on about seeing cling film on brand-new tattoos and how that could bring on an infection (which I generally agree with - but I think if it's taken off when you get home and washed, no biggie). Anyway, later in the session, her husband calls, she answers the phone WITH HER GLOVES ON - then proceeds to go through her purse and her drawers in her studio looking for something for her husband and THEN was going to start tattooing me again! I was like, "can you please put new gloves on?" She did, but she actually looked annoyed at me. It's like PEOPLE! It's not ONLY about wearing gloves - it's also about not CONTAMINATING said gloves!! The other bad experience I had was also from a very good artist, but in my second session with him - where it was an all-day session - he must have spent half the time talking (VERY loudly, in a foreign language - I live outside of the US) to his co-worker and NOT tattooing me while he was talking. It was annoying (the volume - krist on a bicycle!) and the time wasted. I just couldn't bring myself to say anything. But I got charged for the whole day - when he probably only got 4 or 5 hours of real tattooing in. I never went back, even though he's a very good artist. 🚩
Why would cling film cause infections?
@@TheJaezen555 Well, because they believe (and I think they are right, if all the conditions are right / wrong) cling film doesn't breathe at all - and if you leave it on for very long and there were even just a few cells of bacteria under the cling film or on your skin / tattoo - the cling film just makes it bake with your body heat. Under those conditions, a few cells of bacteria can explode into millions of cells of bacteria and you have an infection. Anyway, I always take cling film off when I get home and wash the tattoo.
@@i_love_rescue_animals I have never heard of someone getting an infection from cling film, and ive seen dozens from the tattoo being exposed to air or clothes.
@@TheJaezen555 Well, it can certainly happen from anything - basically bacteria getting in the wound and then not being cleaned properly and kept free from potential bacterial exposure. I've had cling film put on my tattoos many times - but I always took it off and washed, when I got home (just because of the plasma ick). Then use Saniderm or a breathable, wound covering just for a few days - then I move on to leaving it uncovered - with washing several times a day (gently) for the first week or so. Everyone's got their own process.
Can we also talk about being a returning client and then that artist switches up their entire demeanor? Unfortunatley I've experiences pretty much all of these red flags, besides the tattoo artist without tattoos, and they all suck but it also sucks to be a returning client and be treated like crap the second go round. Luckily I found an artist now that is so respectful and nice, she makes the session a total breeze.
About the no tattoos on a tattooartist:
One artist I had work done by does not have any tattoos. But he is all about the art aspect. So the skin is just the medium really. He‘d like to get more canvases sold but there is just a big market for tattoos. So he likes to make art and did not start tattooing because of the artform itself. So probably thats why he‘s not into the aesthetic himself 😊 and both pieces I did by him were stunning and he was the most gentle tattoo artist I ever had penatrate my skin from😅😂
Personal preference for self, doesn’t equal passion for the art.
🚩🚩My second tattoo ever was donde in a girl’s house but I felt very safe all the time, she had a room that was used exclusively for tattooing clients and she had the full professional equipment (meaning I didn’t get tattooed on a sofa or anything like that) and everything was clean and safe. I think tattling at home can be a red flag depending on how it’s done and if the person is a creep and makes you feel uncomfortable
That's how I live with my roommate. Our third room is a tattoo studio with full equipment and I never enter it during her work hours. We make sure the clients have tea, coffee or whatever makes them feel comfy. The dog is not allowed to go inside that room during the day. All of the safety measures are taken into consideration. My roommate is hard of seeing so she has very strong prescription glasses and a headlamp haha all of the tattoos are cute and come out well. There hasn't been a bad case so far
Honestly the fact that the person tattooing out of their home was a woman in this scenario would already make me feel 100x better being tattooed by someone out of their home (being a woman myself). Women tend to understand what being made to feel uncomfortable/creeped out feels like, so I would instantly feel that much safer around one than a man tattooing out of their house. It eliminates a lot of the guess-work.
@@3479Emily totally agree with that
My second tattoo was at the artist's house, but was super clean with a professional set up- he was between shops and getting ready to move out of the area. Totally trusted him.
If you are in some dank garage, I walk away, if you have no portfolio, I walk away, however not having tattoos is not an issue for me if the artist is good and safe at what they do. I remember Ink Master having a contestant being bullied, shamed and almost coerced into getting tattoos and that was just vile and despicable to me, it was hard to watch.
Bad attitude is for sure a red flag. My fiancé went to get a rework done of his first tattoo and the artist just seemed like he didnt want to be there and ignored every thing my fiancé wanted to keep in the tattoo and just blacked it out without telling him.
I was tattooed by a korean artist that has no tattoos and the result as well as the experience was great. However he is a verry well known artist and has videos of his tattooing process and healed work on social media. Their culture surrounding tattoos is also different, which might have influenced why he chose not to be tattooed. So I would say that it depends... It could be a rad flag, but I'd say it's not as bad as the others that were listed in the video.
East Asia definitely has a very different history/relationship with tattooing, compared to western countries, so I'd say it's much less of a red flag for them
🚩 I think that a tattoo artist having no tattoos _could_ be a red flag almost as much as as it could not. I think you can respect and appreciate artists and the tattoo community without necessarily wanting or having tattoos yourself. I understand that it's not the same if you're working as a tattoo artist but a lot of the discourse around it just gives off the same vibes as the discourse around tattoo apprenticeships and how a lot of people think you should work tons of hours for free and cleaning toilets and overall getting treated like crap. Kind of like "it's disrespectful if you haven't suffered like I have". I have tattoos but I'm not a tattoo artist nor am I very active in the community so maybe what I have to say doesn't hold much weight but that's just my two cents.
Also the fact that a lot of people can't get tattoos for medical reasons: whether they have some sort of medical condition, immunodeficiency or are allergic to pretty much every ink; or for religious/cultural/spiritual reasons: whether their culture or religion doesn't allow it or if it's frowned upon in their community. If the person is a really good artist and tattooer (not having any of the other red flags) I don't think the sole fact that they don't personally have any tattoos on their body should mean that they should be shunned from the tattoo community or banned from tattooing or looked down upon.
Every person is different so I think a tattoo artist not having any tattoos on themselves could be considered a red flag but it should be on a case by case basis :)
I agree with you in some extent, but if a person cannot have tattoos because of religious/cultural/spiritual reasons, they couldn't work as a tattoo artist for these same reasons.
@@samanthaabreu782 I meant it in the way that _having_ tattoos isn't allowed or seen positively but not necessarily giving them to other people. I don't have any of these limitations so I don't know exactly how that would work for a person in that situation. Or I could also just be wrong about that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
i agree, like i think it’s completely valid to like something enough to pursue but not want it on yourself
@@samanthaabreu782you will see that many of these religions (you know which ones) forbid tattoos but do not forbid making money off those who want to he tattooed. Its like running any business that is considered sinful, but as long as they are "only making money" and not indulging in the business, that's okay. Absolutely hypocritical and everyone should stay away from these people.
@@ames-inthe-grassagree to disagree but there is a reason why many of us do not want those people making money off tattoos. I worked for one of those kinds of guys and having no tattoos was not the only red flag.
My tattoo artist works in a shop and he also sometimes works out of his home studio, I’ve been to both. He has the same high standard of cleanliness and safety when he does tattoo at home as he does at the shop.
I even had a "creepy" person tattooing me. As a man people may not thing we get creepy artists (all though I'm sure much less than women) but we do. I had a tattoo artist doing a piece on my abdomen and would only rest their arm on my junk, even with many other more comfortable places to rest their arm.
For the first one, I think it’s important to add many people simply can’t get tattoos because of skin conditions, or issues with healing scars, who for that reason can’t have tattoos because their skin would not react well, if that makes sense ? Hence why some tattoo artists still tattoo others and are passionate about them. Wich is why it needs more nuance when calling that a red flag. I don’t have that issue but I know people who do and they would first need to check with a dermatologist to check if it’s not too dangerous
I personally don't mind my tattoo artist not having any tattoos so long there is not any other red flags. At least in my mind, in the same way different people get tattoos for different reasons from sentimental to funny stuff a person can choose to not get anything for a multitude of reasons and be perfectly valid as well. Perhaps there are religious, cultural, or physical reasons they cannot get inked , perhaps they haven't quite have the type of tattoo they have in mind to be tattooed on them, or just plain doesn't feel like it for whatever reason.
I think all of that can be respected and from my pov, so long as they treat their clients with all the respect and care they deserve than I would be perfectly happy with getting a piece from them if I like their work.
To each their own but tattooers not having any tattoos makes me wonder what they actually like about tattoos. The fact that tattoers can make a lot of money and get followers by marketing correctly on social media have been two reasons why the industry has ballooned so much in the last 10 years. How can you really appreciate skin art if you don't have any yourself? But then again I am at the point in my life where I am completing a suit and my tattooers have body suits themselves. They learned from people before them who have body suits.
This is not to say that people without tattoos cannot be skilled in doing decent tattoos. It just makes me wonder why they haven't taken the plunge themselves, and I have never been truly impressed by tattooers who have none.
Agree, there’s people with allergies that for the longest time they simply didn’t have an option, also there’s religious reasons that doesn’t mean they don’t admire the craft any less. Nobody get into inking just to pay bills, is not a field with an accessible start.
@@biazacha To me it's very telling if your religion prohibits you from getting tattoos but does not prohibit you from making money tattooing other people. If you want a tattoo so badly your best option is someone without tattoos, then good luck to you.
@@felix-ve8jk Maybe I havent hit the higher end of tattooing but I have never consider it a industry where you go in and can make bank and get famous as a tattoo artist without the skill and knowledge there to at least walk the walk. There is not to say there are no bad tattoo artists or ones that just care about money and overcharging, but I imagine the red flags would go far beyond them not having tattoos.
I guess you can make the argument that it is about respect in the craft or tradition if they don't have tattoos but I have seen that type of rhetoric justify so many of the bad things that are pervasive in the industry that I cant quite help but think about how much it is really necessary in the end of the day.
So long as the clients are happy and the artist takes good care of them, I dont see why not go to them if you like their work and they dont have tattoos themselves.
@@KogXV Like I said, I am not saying people without tattoos can't or shouldn't tattoo. But, imo, they will never become great tattooers, as they hold back on even getting tattoos themselves. From everything I've seen these are always tattooers who are doing very forgettable work. They serve a purpose and that is to give a client a tattoo. So be it. The last person I saw on IG who had none is working at a trendy shop in Los Angeles that now does anasthesia/sedation tattoos for large fees. I could not help but notice she has a lot of face work done, like cheek reconstruction, botox and collagen. No tattoos.
The only real excuse I've seen from the non-tattooed tattooers is they are indecisive about what they'd want to have on their bodies for the rest of their life. Still very amusing to have that attitude and put permanent ink on other people every single day.
No matter how clean shops are, no matter how many tattoos these professionals have and all the other “red flags” like 80% of professional tattoo artists in my city are rude as hell with bad attitudes. For some reason, ever since I can remember, most of the artists I’ve come across just act like they are higher than tho, snobby and stuck up. I was so excited getting my first tattoos and I already knew and looked up to some of the first artists I went to at a local shop and it was like meeting your hero’s and being let down. Totally killed my excitement and burst my bubble whe I started coming around. Making statements like “oh sounds like somebody has been watching too much LA ink” or just literally ignoring you and your excitement to be tattood by them. I think it’s overall the worst part about tattoo culture and happens everywhere.
I have a friend that is an independent tattoo artist, and she works from home, but she has set up this room exclusively to tattoo, with everything you would find in a shop. I don't think that is a red flag, but I would definitely find it suspicious if she made people sit on the sofa in her living room to get tattooed.
I just don't understand why someone not having a tattoo while being a tattoo artist is a red flag. It's not a standard that's put on any other industry, so I just don't understand why it's seen as necessary here. Like imagine if we only picked a urologist based on if they've personally passed a kidney stone or not.
I think of it in relation to the hair industry. I've gone to lots of salons and never have I seen a colorist who didn't also have color done in their hair at one point or another. And unfortunately, I know that colorists get less business if they don't color their own hair. It's like being a walking advertisement for your brand. Not saying it's right, just that I can understand it both ways.
You can choose to get tattoos done, you can’t really choose to have a kidney stone! 😂
Why would you want a service from someone that doesn't get that service themselves? A therapist that needs therapy and doesn't see a therapist themselves, a car salesman that doesn't own a car, a musical instrument shop clerk that doesn't play any instruments; it absolutely is a standard for any industry to take part in the consumer side of one's own industry
@@TamagoSenshi I'm an anesthesiologist and I've never had any form of regional or general anesthesia. Neither have many of my colleagues. Should I quit? 😂
@@viha8544ok but medicine is something you can't voluntarily choose to experience. A tattoo artist without tattoos is like a pastry chef that doesn't eat desserts, a dog trainer who has never owned a dog, a plant nursery worker who doesn't have a single houseplant. Like, they could obviously still be amazing at what they do and there could be some very legitimate side reasons as to why they don't partake in it but idk, it still feels so weird, like they're emotionally detached from their profession
Its okay to not have tattoos. You just need to be professional, care for people and clean
So happy to see Celle uploaded today!! Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend🖤
Thank you!! Love your username haha 😊 hope you have a great weekend too ❤
@@celle_tattoo omg thanks!!🙏
I m a tattoo artist with just 2 small tattoo....i m in love with tattoos but i m a very indecise person
I think you're take on tattoo artists with no tattoos is spot on.
Another amazing informative video! I agree with everything you mentioned. Tattoos shops/artists should never discourage a client from getting a tattoo done and it’s so disappointing how often it happens. Tattooing should always be a fun and great experience for both the artist and the client!
🚩 nothing but facts in this video! love your channel Celle, and sidenote: u have such a nice voice! it’s very calm but also dynamic, i could listen to u talk abt tattoos all day 🤗
I don't care if an artist has tattoos. I just got my first a while ago and it was, however, really easy for my artist to point to a blank spot on his tattooed arm and say 'this is what happens if you pick a scab'. 😆 A strong and representative portfolio matters to me. 🚩
Your videos have been amazing recently you seem so confident and happy and it’s lovely to see!
🚩 I've watched almost all of your videos. I think you've helped me to "tap the brakes" a bit and really think about my next tattoo(s). You are providing a service. So thank you! Oh and your voice is so pleasant to listen to!! Keep 'em coming! I want to know when you're tattooing, but I bet you'll be booked solid! 🙂
Love your videos so much celle!! 🚩🚩🚩
🚩 first tat red flag vid where i agree with all of em!!! as always, excellent vid!!
love ur vids . find ur voice sooo relaxing ❤❤
I love your content, I feel so lucky to have found your channel as a tattoo virgin. Your voice is so angelic
i'm an artist, only two years of experience including my apprenticeship. my mentor discouraged me from tattooing myself, but now that i'm in a different shop i've been considering it. mostly for advertising purposes
This is an important video! Thanks for making it! Luckily I'm in Los Angeles so one day it's on my bucket list to get a tattoo from you when your apprenticeship is done!
That would be amazing !!
Also ..love ya dear! Thx for posting:)
You have such a gentle voice. Great video
The "no portfolio" thing happened to me very recently! I went to a flash event, at a well known shop, where all of the artists were listed. I researched the studios, artists (all professionals with years under their belts), and their portfolios.. all looked great, so I was excited! My friend and I went to the event where I picked multiple flashes to get done. The artist who took me was very nice, but I immediately had a sense that something was off. They didn't let me really get a good look at the completed works, before wrapping them up poorly, and some parts of the process felt less hygienic than normal. The next day I found them to be blown out, patchy, infected, and the artist ignored important portions of the stencils. Upon looking them up I found they were an apprentice of 4 months. They had no portfolio at all. No fresh photos, no healed photos, no tagged photos, nothing. Just pictures of them advertising "apprentice photos" at this shop, and maybe 2-3 posts of art (on paper) they've done. (I understand everyone needs to start somewhere, but neglecting to tell me felt like a bad practice. At least let me have the choice since its something permanently on my body!) One tattoo is more infected than the other, but overall it's slowly healing, and the studio promised to fix it free of charge.
Really helpful! 🚩
I don't like the 🚩about artists without tattoos. Like, if we shouldn't judge a dermatologist for having tattoos, why should we judge a tattooer for not having them? Just let the work speak for itself. If they do their own designs, the designs are good, and they place and tattoo them well, that's all i care about.
Yo!! My tattoo artist was on one of the videos talking about red flags at the end!! She’s great 🖤
All of these red flags make me miss my tattoo artist more. She is great! But sadly lives in another state. I need to make a trip soon. From the moment I met her I felt at ease in her presence. I have worked with other artists and its always something, bad attitudes, questionable shops, lack of professionalism, or once you get tattooed by them they no longer respond to your messages 🙄. You name it, I've seen it.🚩
another interesting video! 🚩 i'm un-tattoo-d but have been flirting with the thought of getting some and stumbled on your planning a sleeve tattoo and how to find tattoo artists videos and been binging the rest since. i'm curious, how do tattoos look over time, weight fluctuation or on different body types?
i’m really glad to have found amazing tattoo artists that I don’t have to worry about all these 🚩🚩
I would love a video about client red flags to tattoo artists as well! My BIL is a tattoo artist and he’s dealt with some crazy stuff over the years
I’d like to know people’s opinions on this.
Some years ago I really wanted to get a tattoo with this guy that is well known in my country, sometimes even gets invited to other countries in Europe and the US to tattoo there, but he’s primarily located in my country’s capital. One day I saw on Instagram that he was coming to my city, and I immediately booked an appointment with him. From the start he told me where it was gonna be, he rented an apartment with a friend just to tattoo, they weren’t actually living there, and they had their set up there with the tattoo bed, the metal table to hold their implements and the lights there, just as in a regular tattoo studio. Besides that there was a sofa and a coffee table in the living room, but not much else in the apartment. He was very professional during the appointment, and so far the tattoo he made is one of my favorites that I have. We also were not alone just the two of us, his friend was also tattooing there.
Would that be considered a red flag as in tattooing at home?
I feel like what makes home tattoos less sanitary is that people are living there and you can’t really know how clean they keep it, while studios are supposed to follow rules and procedures to keep things clean (usually). But it sounds like in your scenario, they treated the apartment more like a studio since they didn’t even live there so I feel as though that is fine. I think the home tattoo red flag depends on a lot of different factors
Love your Videos so much! :>
🚩🚩🚩
My cousin has multiple tattoos and went to a new local shop and they had no examples of their work. He said he is a real artist and thinks tattoo books are tacky and she should trust his artistry! He was really rude and made her feel silly for questioning him. She practically ran out of the shop
good stuff 🚩
🚩 I feel blessed to have only encountered safe, wonderful artists.
I love tattoos... on others. I personally want to be completely naked when I don't wear clothes but I feel that with tattoos i would never be completely nude.
I have two original ideas I've come up with myself just sketching around in my journal and can't wait till the end of the year to get mine done, atleast just one of them.. 4 now
I absolutely love tattoos. I‘m obsessed with tattoo content and watch it all the time. 90% of the people I follow online are tattoo artists. I study art and I‘m really really good at drawing so yeah I‘d be interested to become a tattoo artist yet the thought of putting something on my body for the rest of my life (and to decide what that should be at such a young age) gives me anxiety. So I love when people accept that Tattoos are not for everyone at everytime and still allow them to become tattoo artists. Me not having Tattoos doesn’t make me less passionate for what im doing! Hope this answers your question
🚩 are just green lights to do a u turn at... thanks Celle. Again, another great video.
idk i feel 100x more comfortable in my tattooers home shop vs an actual shop and my tattoos look better and healed much better than anything i got in a shop
but he also worked in a shop before moving to a home studio so i feel like telling people to always stay away from home studios and only go to named shops you can google is kinda weird since theyre not always “self taught” artists that completely ignore every safety standard
Getting my sternum tattooed on Friday, I’m so excited but very nervous for the pain and healing since Iv only had arm and leg tattoos so far 😬 what was the healing like for your sternum tattoo??
My friend’s tattoo artist doesn’t have any tattoos…because she’s afraid of needles 💀
I agree with you on a tattoo artist having a bad attitude. Because I wanted to get my first tattoo on my 42nd birthday. Not the day before or the day after. But this first tattoo place I went to that was only 2 blocks away from where I live. The 1st tattoo artist I spoke to was booked for months and he was nice. But he couldn't do it on my birthday because he was booked for months. And I was making the appointment a few weeks ahead. He referred me to the other tattoo artist that was there. And this guy had a very bad attitude. He didn't want to do it on my birthday. He wanted to do it the day before. I even showed him exactly what I wanted done because I had the picture. He just had an attitude and said it was too much notice on the day I wanted. I can understand if it was short notice. I ended up going somewhere else that was further away. And I think I made the right call. Because my tattoo is great and healing very nicely. The tattoo artist that did my first tattoo. He was very nice, enjoyed doing what he does, he was informative, and he had very good customer service skills. I plan on getting 2 more done. I plan on getting the 2nd tattoo done in a couple of months and getting the 3rd tattoo done a couple of months after that. And with the same artist that did my first tattoo. I paid $200 for my first. My 2nd tattoo will most likely be about $400 - $600 and my 3rd will about $600. So the artist with the bad attitude is missing out on making money.
I think am exception to the home tattoo would be countries where it's illegal like South Korea but most the artist over there they have you go to a certain location but wherever it is they treat it like an actual shop and they still looking very professional and I swear some of the best tattoos I've ever seen are done over there.
I think I have an idea of who everyone was hinting at for the final red flag 😂
Not having tattoos doesnt seem like that big of a deal to me, its a personal thing and the industry you work in shouldn't expect you to change your appearance. At the end of the day, a plastic surgeon doesnt need to get a BBL to be able to perform one lol
I want to become an apprentice in a few years, and I’m 18 right now so I don’t have any tattoos but I’m planning on getting my first one after I get my liscense :)! I agree it’s kinda weird if they don’t have any tattoo but I kinda am not really open to the idea of tattooing myself, it just seems like it would be way more difficult than tattooing someone else or getting tattood by somone. I feel like it would make me woozy 😅
I have a family member who is currently in rehab but was doing hard drügs for over a decade. She got a lot of tattoos at people's houses. She recently got a hepatitis diagnosis, no knowing where/when she got it but home tattoos have always grossed me out.
I find it weird that you say "if the artist doesn't have a tattoo, it feels like it's just their job", like there's no artistry behind it. I'm a complete outsider to this community, but it's a strange implication. What if you love tattooing other people and just don't want to have tattoos of your own for some reason (health condition, fears, personal style, life situation)? The argument "you should know what you're putting your clients through" is also super odd, do all plastic surgeons, aestheticians etc have to get the procedures as well? All in all, it is controversial, you are right.
🚩i hate when older tattoo artist make less/fun of new artists just because they depend on technology for the design, like get over yourself, it’s a new era 😭😭😭
Love your hair in this video! You look so confident and beautiful lately 🥹❤️❤️❤️
I think these are all great red flags. I also feel like a big red flag is if they are aggressive. I know someone who got a tattoo and they felt trapped and scared to say no or communicate at all because the little they did communicate wasn’t heard or was ignored…. They also pressed too hard or not enough so I think if you just have a bad feeling with the person don’t go to them because the whole experience will suck
Why should anyone else trust me, if i don't trust my skills and don't tattoo myself?
I hate the feeling, its so strange. But still did it couple of times, just to break the nervousness of going onto real skin. :)
I personally don't see a problem with a tattoo artist not having tattoos. Like, I love to paint but I don't have my paintings on my wall. I know and like what I do, I don't need to have it on my wall. Of course there could be a medical reason, like maybe their body always scars bumby. Or maybe they just like the way they look as is. Also something to note is that a a tattoo artist may have tattoos under their clothes, like on the legs or back. I mean I wear long pants everywhere and am planning on getting a thig tattoo.
When it comes to tattoo artist tattooing themselves, I know it's treated as a rite of passage but I don't think it's necessary. Then again I'm a perfectionist, and could never tattoo myself with the precision I'd tattoo others because of a.) the pain (so much pain) and b.) the angle when you tattoo yourself.
Had a very creepy guy do my first tattoo and I didn’t get another one for 4 years I was so put off. He was kind of a mix of creepy and bad attitude.. he also seemed very annoyed with me and all these years later the tattoo he did is severely blown out! 🚩 wish I had known then what to look out for and avoid!
I’m a tattooist with no tattoos. My reason is because I’m disgustingly indecisive when it comes to myself. I have a much easier time helping others. It doesn’t mean I’m not passionate about my craft, it also doesn’t mean I don’t know how it feels. I do. I just don’t have any ink. I absolutely love tattooing, I love my clients, and I absolutely LOVE art. I take pride in giving people the best tattoo and experience ever. You don’t have to like it by my clients do!
I had a tattoo done in a guys attic. But he did have it set up as a studio. And this was 30 years ago when you didn’t even have to wrap anything. Just gloves.
Re: creepiness 🚩& dating sites. There was a particular tattoo artist in my city I would always see on the dating sites before I became a tattooer & he was called out in the last few years for harassment & inappropriate behaviour. So ladies, if a dude is flaunting that he’s a tattooer on a dating site, be wary.
longer vids please !
while i agree that inexperienced people shouldn't be tattooing at home with cheap home kits, saying that home kits are bad because your local artist has gone through hell and back just to earn their place among other tattoo artists.... idk, sounds like a problem with the industry, which is probably why some people want to at least dip their toes in the practice with these home kits
like, if someone feels as though they paid too much for an apprenticeship, the mentor set that price for you, not these random people buying home kits
practice on pig legs or something before scratching your home kit into other people!
The major one for me is not accepting my concerns/criticism as a client. 🙃
I'm excited l scheduled my first consultation with a local tattoo artist. It's kinda a fancy tattoo shop but I figure tattoos aren't something that you cheap out on.
It's kinda hard to get booked with that shop which is probably a green flag.🚩
One of my tattoo artists is 70, has been tattooing for 50 years and has 0 tattoos. Still one of the best artist in Paris.
And if your comfortable with a tattoo artist with no tattoos. That's up to you. For most people like myself. I would not feel comfortable or trust a tattoo artist with no tattoos. I would like to say congratulations to your artist for tattooing for 50 years. Maybe if I saw a video of the artist tattooing people and saw the art. Maybe I would trust a tattoo artist with no tattoos. But again, I would like to say congratulations to your artist for tattooing for 50 years. That's very commendable.
I feel like sometimes tattoo artists treat certain people better (like they're friendlier or more willing to talk/create an inviting environment) depending what you look like... my mom is a heavier set woman and the attitude towards his staff was much friendlier and outgoing and of course he knows them but I would want my clients to feel like they belong and are wanted there. Not like you're a bother or like they can't wait to be done with you
I am late lol but I agree on the home tattooing - and I do it. I don't tattoo others (never will without a sterile environment), but I have tattooed myself.
I can't get an apprenticeship where I live (master's degree in art is required for the two shops that do non-family apprenticeships), so I sold everything I own to move to a city where I might have a chance at getting one in the next 5 years. Until then, I only use fake skins, and a small tattoo on myself to track progress ~6-8 months (all on my upper thigh to hide them lol). If I can't, I will be saving up for a safe area to tattoo in ($27,000 minimum for yearly rental space, not including all the cleaners, ink bc I use only kuro sumi, disposable grips for my inkjecta, etc etc, plus licensing to open the shop. Probably around $38k for a year.)
I think one 🚩 not mentioned here that's mostly for people getting their first tattoo and I hope not common: seemly over invested in how much your first tattoo is going to hurt. I have a shoulder tattoo planned for one of my future tattoos and have talked about it once or twonce. Some artists are so sweet and recommend I don't get something in a bony area for my first tattoo (that's fine I have other tattoo plans) but some just focus in on how much that would hurt and it didn't feel in a 'you should be careful you aren't ready for that yet and you don't want to tap out without a finished work' kind of way.
Even though I have chronic pain and a pretty high pain tolerance. They still went on about how it hurts and I told them straight up "don't worry about it. I'd never get tattooed with you based on this conversation". Only one backed off and apologized, the rest pulled the ultimate creepy guy move and got offended at ME for being wary thus confirming red flag status
I was considering looking into studies and stuff to do tattoo, but if I **have** to be tattooed to be taken seriously this just makes me feel discouraged to consider tattoo as an option.
Small one 🚩but not giving some kind of written (printed or digital) aftercare instructions. If it’s been a long sitting, sometimes I’m hungry or tired-I’m not going to remember verbal aftercare instructions, especially if the artist is trying to get photos taken at the same time.
My advice is look to see if your artist has aftercare instructions posted somewhere before you book. Or ask them how they’ll get them to you before you book.
I feel like I wouldn’t tat myself if I was an artist. I love art, and I think tattoos are beautiful, but I just wouldn’t see myself having them. Maybe I’d have little ones but nothing too obvious. I dunno I don’t think it’s weird if a talented artist doesn’t wear them.
Where I live it’s super common for artists to have studios in their apartments, the space is dedicated the tattooing only so I don’t see the problem
Having tattoos shows a love of tattoos and I definitely wouldn't want to be tattooed by someone who doesn't have enough love for their craft to get a tattoo themselves
I'm so lucky to have found my artist Hes done both of my 2 tattoos and he will be doing the rest of them all over my body, At first as a queer person I was afraid of going to a man but Im so glad I pushed through and went to him hes so cool love this man
I get it but I wanna think carefully of what I will have on my body for the rest of my life😭😭that's why I have no tattoos yet, maybe, IDK😭😭
My favourite place to be tattooed is out of a house/bedroom. Personally I find shops very stress inducing and judgmental. As long as I feel safe with the person totally love a home studio.
god all of these are so real. I've definitely been to some interesting shops, from a guy who was blowing his vape right onto me WHILE WORKING, to the dude who started asking me invasive questions about my genitalia (being trans is so fun) and going on political rants (he votes for guns and guns alone, apparently)
I had a tattoo horror story recently when on vacation.
I definitely paid the tourist tax but that wasn’t an issue. The issue was they had me wait three hours, I paid upfront which was so so stupid. And at one point my artist was yelling fuck this fuck that “someone better come tattoo this girl before I lose it”. She was heavy handed and rude. It’s a three by four and took twice as long to heal as any other tattoo I have. Oh also she tattooed me on a puppy pee pad. No wrapped up chair. Then wrapped the tattoo in a paper towel. Nightmare.
i feel like no tatoos should be okay and not a redflag, as the comparison of sh and tatooing is a topic being brought up more and more. thats the reason i dont have tatoos, im years clean and i dont want to do anything to risk that
For the part where it talks about only showcasing one type of skin tone -- how would an artist respectfully go about making a role call for different skin tones? I would love more variety in my portfolio.
Tattooing yourself or having tattoos in order to be a tattoo artist is eronious. Pretty sure a tattoo by Picasso would be worth a lot even tho I doubt Plato had 20yr old patch sleeves from when he was "learning" or "paying dues."
is this music is the same opening from pony lawson?
I agree that self taught artists are not a red flag. Ryan ashley and Anthony Michael were both self-taught and had only been tattooing for about 4 years when they won. They are 2 of the best artists to ever appear on the show.
