A laryngeal mask airway does not create complete airway control. It does not protect the airway from gastric content aspiration and should be used only in an unconscious patient with no gag reflex.
For a patient with a known or suspected airborne transmitted infectious illness, gentle ventilations with a supraglottic airway (e.g., laryngeal mask airway) is recommended as an option for preoxygenation in place of bag-mask ventilation to decrease the need for additional manpower and reduce exposure.
Coat the posterior surface of the laryngeal mask airway with a water-soluble lubricant.
Grasp the laryngeal mask airway by positioning an index finger in the crease between the airway tube and the laryngeal mask.
Advance the mask until resistance is felt at the hypopharynx Remove the index finger while applying slight pressure to the airway tube to prevent dislocation of the laryngeal mask airway
Inflate the cuff according to the manufacturer’s instructions. During inflation, release the laryngeal mask airway so that it can seat itself in the hypopharynx as the cuff expands.
Equal bilateral breath sounds and chest rise and fall
