it also increases the imports of coal generated electricity from Greece, Kosovo, and soon Macedonia. Also is bring a natural gas plant back online to meet demand in Vlore. So this really isn't protecting the environment, it's just shifting it to something less obvious
@@lemontree6686 Albania only generates about 30% of the electricity it would need to be a modern european nation. so it has to increase hydro, solar, and wind production. because this river was going to generate the base load supply for the south now they have to get it from coal imports and gas. There's now a pipeline to bring gas to vlore, a gas plant being refurbished, and a planned import terminal. Albania is already importing a large amount of coal power from kosovo and greece(soon macedonia too), now that will just increase pollution instead of albania exporting clean energy to them. And because solar panels obviously dont work at night or when it's cloudy(something these guys dont seem to realize) you have no choice without hydro cuz the lights gotta come on at night too.
My mother grew up near this river, I grew up there too. All those memories...I remember waking up every morning thinking Vjosa was the most beautiful thing in the world and watching the sunsets getting prettier and prettier every day not knowing how important Vjosa actually was. We need to protect it at all costs. This is not just a river. People's life, memories and everything are connected to it and we need to save it!
2019 I was on a multi day kayak trip on the Vjosa. It is such a beautiful river and it was the greatest trip I ever made. I hope that I can come back one day to paddle the Vjosa again, still as a free river.
As a passionate fly fisherman and nature lover, this video and this story is particularly touching for me. All of Europe and many areas used to look like this, nowadays most of it is dead and lost. I know what I'm talking about, I live in Austria and there are more power plants every year, and so much is lost with the construction of power plants. Fish are becoming extinct, and bird and insect populations are also declining drastically. It's tragic and when I think about how stupid and inconsiderate we are, I'm often sad and I cry or almost cry, or i am shaking. We have to open up globally and renaturate rivers, I am glad that the EU water directive and now the renaturation target have been approved, it is the first step. Well done, respect - and now it has to go on, people wake up. Together, we are strong - keep going and push!! And the most important thing, never give up 😍😍 🖤🖤🖤
Let's protect this river for the benefit of nature and humans! The Vjosa River is one of Europe’s last living wild rivers. Along its entire course of over 270 kilometers - from its source in the Greek mountains to the Adriatic Sea - it is untamed and free-flowing. Together with its tributaries, the Vjosa provides a dynamic, near-natural ecosystem that is without par in Europe. Permanent protection is the only way to preserve this beautiful place!
I support this initiative! Albania has an over-concentration of large dams and hydropower in general and more are planned - in many areas throughout the country. Excluding hydro-power in a single transboundary river - in the Vjosa- would be an deep statement for sustainability and would support the international image of Albania as a global ecotourism and heritage center worldwide. Albania is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe -this landscape integrity, authenticity, naturalness should be protected by the Albanian authorities. Finally protecting the Vjosa is a national heritage priority.
When I see places that are almost completly untouched by mankind I get amazed by the bio-diversity and the amount of animals it can sustain. It just goes to show how much destruction human greed can cause.
Wow, that is amazing. Now I want to travel to Albania to see this. We do not have one untouched river here in my country in Germany. Wow, this is so amazing people! Well done
i'm from greece in the near of the albanian border. Everytime i drive past this river i am hypnotized by its beautiful water. I really hope they can create a Vjosa National Park. This beauty and nature must be protected!!

0:33 "The Vjosa in Albania is the last wild river in Europe." Seems you haven't heard of Tornionjoki / Torne älv / Torne River on the border of Finland and Sweden, since that's also wild and in Europe.
We are talking about two different rivers Tornionjoki river is different of the Vjosa. Tornionjoki is longer than Vjosa, If Tornionjoki river has no dams or reconstruction it is valuable as the Vjosa. Vjosa is the largest untouched river in the Balkans and the most biodiverse. If Tornionjoki river has been dammed it is very different from the river Vjosa. There are also many wild rivers in the Balkans that need protection from the dam projects. Basically the Balkan peninsula has the last free rivers in Europe. Biodiversity is very high on the peninsula.
@@TeKaMOTO If your point is that Vjosa is not the last wild river in europe you are right, the campaign went from being one of the last wild rivers, to recently the last wild river. Dam projects do not bring long-term benefits in the long run, and this has been proved time and time again in countries that have implemented dam construction.
So Europe wants to protect Vjosa river in Albania when itself destroyed all the rivers all over the continent. EUROPE make sure to fix yourself first and then our rivers!
Question: is it worse to prevent the construction of the dams and still relying on fossil fuels for energy production (thus involving all the climate change considerations, also the probability that many wild areas like this will be destroyed by it) or is it worse to damage this areas while giving population clean energy and thus reducing Albania carbon footprint?
There is no problem with carbon footprint in Albania becouse of energy generation, since 97% comes from hydropower. The dams here in the Vjosa would make an ecological damage by altering the river flow.
La nature malmenée, les hommes déracinés, l'inégalité galopante, sont des conséquences inévitables liées à la logique inhérente du capitalisme, la course effrénée au profit. The goverment part in the end ruined all of the video because it was the same party who gave 30 hydropowerplant contracts to be build in the Vjosa river.
What do you guys plan to do about the natural gas plant being refurbished in Vlore now, or the huge imports of coal generated power from Greece, Kosovo, and soon Macedonia? What about the fact that without the power storage capacity of hydro you can't build solar plants because where's the power going to come from at night? From more coal imports? You guys spin this issue as some simple feel good project that's going to save the environment when you're just shifting the problem to something less noticeable. Also Exxonmobil is looking into an import terminal for natural gas, ironically announced the day after slacktivist Dicaprio posted about this.
