Somehow I stumbled upon your channel on RUclips and have enjoyed it . I became interested in pirates and sea faring adventures just a couple of years ago, so I'm still learning. Great content !!
Tanning does make a difference. IRL I look like a Viking, but I’m not. Really. I’m both European and Native American. When I tan, my skin is as dark or darker than my boss who is Indian (India). No joke. Long sleeve shirts, pants, and a brimmed hat help with the sun, but a good tan and then some cover does the job for me. 🖖👍
This is such an important channel for me. I'm actually writing a cosmic horror story with a dash of pulp - pirates escaping from an army of cultists on the high seas. The Pirate's Port has been a treasure trove of information. I'll be happy to buy your book, and I hope when mine releases, you'll have a look at it as well.
Good job! Much better rythm and sound quality. I hope your channel takes off some day. The images could still be more in tune with narration, thus showing pirates in the situations you describe.
Thanks! The images are very difficult at times depending on the subject material I'm talking about but I try to do my best with making the visuals match up with the narration.
@ThePiratesPort Nah. I think that you're absolutely killing it. Your content is top notch and you've got a real passion for what you do. Thank you for your hard work and countless hours of entertaining material
Im English, but my partner is from the southern united states, somewhere which starts to resemble a giant oven during the summer months, Alabama's a pretty sticky place in august, to say the least! As a reader of southern history, ive found the way they'd deal with summer conditions in the past is by using common sense - they'd use cotton and other light breathable materials for summer clothing ladies wouldnt use those weighty fabrics which were fashionable during the victorian era such as silk, and i imagine a few less layers, they wore wide brimmed boaters and straw hats to shade the head and theyd also soak bedsheets in water in the evening And as well as this theyd simply spend as much time as possible in the shade, and only leave when chores or work required them to I cant imagine things were much different for pirates in the west indies, your options to deal with heat and sunburn were pretty limited to what ive said here prior to air conditioning
There are some sources that mention musicians being on board but I'd imagine they were probably sailors that could play an instrument instead of full time musicians. They would have played cards, told stories, drawn, sang, etc. to pass the time and, just like today, some of them would have been gifted with the ability to make the others laugh.
And imagine how bad it must have been to be surrounded by clear blue water that, even in the unlikely chance you knew how to swim, you wouldn't dare enter due to the sharks that constantly followed ships.
I hadn't seen anything about using urine for prevention or treatment of sunburn. Can you give me a little more information so I can see what I can find about it?

Great vid. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice
i love this channel
on the plus side .. if you got sunburn,, you probably dont have scurvy
This video begs the question: What did pirates do at night?
Slept
Also, some of the men of pirate crews were adapted to the sun, like Spainards who tan easily and any men from the Carribean who are naturally darker.

A good subject on the life of a pirate, a situation often overlooked. An excellent view into their possible cures defences of sun burn.
Thanks Nick!
what about sun protection of the eyes? I couldn’t imagine going outside the sun without my shades 😅
Sunglasses trick your skin into thinking it's night why people burn more and get skin cancer.
Sunglasses weren't a thing during the golden age of piracy but the hats would have helped somewhat.
I thought pirates put charcoal around or under their eyes to protect them from the sun

Was there and leisure on these ships? Would they bring entertainment? Kind of like a jester. Or just a funny guy they forced on the ship

I am a Pirate Fanatic.
Sunburn, heatstroke, long sleeved shirts and wide pirate hats in HOT caribbean weather..... Boy, what a HARD life to be a thief of the sea's 🌊

@ThePiratesPort I need to contact: Captain Jack Sparrow about this !!!!!
I wonder if pirates made use of urine, since it's an old tradition among a lot of different old nations... It sure would be specially useful for them.
I hadn't seen anything about using urine for prevention or treatment of sunburn. Can you give me a little more information so I can see what I can find about it?
Wouldn't linen be more appropriate for the early 1700s then cotton canvass???
Darn good medical history
Thanks glad you liked it!
