Thanks for this! Hands down the most amazing place I've ever been to. I rented a $200+ per night cabin with a front row view of the Mittens... it had a kitchen with no pots pans dishes cutlery etc. So I ended up eating at the restaurant and spending a lot more. Still, a once-in-a-lifetime trip so I don't regret it! Bought some amazing artwork at their giftshop as well. Hoping to make it a twice in a lifetime trip from Canada!

I've been lucky enough to visit many times since 1992 camping (Tent not RV) at the old site overlooking the mittens before that hotel spoilt the perfect view. Also several days on horseback with a Navajo guide sleeping under the stars, magical and so different from my home in Shropshire UK. Memories that last forever.

We were just here - Dec 2022. Stayed at Goulding’s Lodge. This area is quite remote, so lodging and dining options are limited.
December weather was crisp but clear skies. We completed the loop to see all sights in Monument Valley in about 3 hours. The Navajo nation charges $8 per passenger - entry is allowed only till 3 pm. After that it becomes dusk and you will not be able to see the scenic beauty of this place clearly. Recommend that you get in around 11 am - 1 pm, so that you have enough time to leisurely drive around. The road is unpaved, but was not a problem in a minivan.
Definitely worth a visit. The sense of scale is hard to capture on a camera. It is amazing to see these huge structures formed over millennia.

I've always had photography for a hobby, congratulations on those shots with the rainbow and son cutting across the top of the Rock. Totally awesome. I'd gone to goblin valley State Park. And it was solid overcast and really muddied up the lighting and killed the colors of the formations. I was so disappointed because I had driven a long way for disappointing photos but ended up glad that I had what I ended up with anyway. It is all in the lighting and having your camera with you no matter where you go because you never know when I get photo or materialize unexpectedly. 👍🏻

It's not affordable for many Americans but the foreign travelers (in many U.S. vacation areas) think everything is a bargain. Sad that things are so expensive and controlled now but it's the Navajo's country and the dollar is king. Hope to make one last visit to Monument Valley before long.

Canyon de Chelly can take all day especially if you hike down to WhiteHouse. since it’s on the way, drive through Petrified Forest. When in Page AZ check out Lake Powell and hike up to the Horseshoe overlook. that’s a day. Mon valley is a day. There will be no cel coverage for at least some of the trip - tough for teens. 4 days will be busy depending weather. no need to reduce tire pressure at mon valley. Shader trail can be tougher

I take my photography very serious, and I have spent many days and nights shooting photos there, never got a wall hanger though. I was at Artist Point just before sunrise and it was looking good, there was a lot of color in the sky all I was waiting for is the sun to raise just to give some side light, when all of a sudden, a new Chevy Suburban dove up, I thought, great here comes the photographers now. I had two cameras sitting on tripods when this Indian guy jumps out of the Suburban saying, go, go, right now, go, go, he was mad as hell. I was completely taken of guard; I thought the guy wanted to fight me. I'm 53 and had a major stoke a few years back, I'm paralyzed on my right side and can barely talk. He said,'' I'm sick and tired of you photographers thinking that you own the land and just go''. I told him many times have I been here and that there's been no problem what's so ever. At this point a man jumps out of the passenger side of the Suburban with a camera and tripod and I say, "what's this, what's this?'' The Indian said I'm his guide and you have to pay me before you can take a photo. I asked him when it is OK to take photos and he said between 1p.m. and 5p.m. the other photographer just laughed and said you can't take a photo during the day the light is horrible. I packed up my cameras while the sun was just starting to come up and the photographer got a killer shot the one, I've been waiting all my life to get. That place has now become Animal Farm the greedy pigs have taken over the farm, you'll have to hire a guide to do anything in the park, they had a good thing going there for years and they screwed it up. They're just going to get their money from the foreigner, that's what they think and they're right, you can up the prices on everything, and the foreigners will still come while drowning out the working-class Americans. @@TheWestisBig

Wow!!! Thanks for the detail! I'll include this story in the next update. I've been there 6ish times over the last 30 yrs. Since they built the hotel its been getting worse and there have been many more fees but requiring a guide to take a sunrise shot is ridiculous. It used to be one of my favorite places- they are ruining it.
      again thanks for the info.
