Another Daugherty descendant here! AncestryDNA and research confirmed a direct lineage to the clan. Love learning about my ancient family history here. Thank you!
My great great grandmother was Anne Jane Doherty, married to Bernard lynch. Looking forward to hearing more about them.. great video, thank you.. Dympna Lynch
Greetings from the US from another Daugherty.
Dougherty here hailing from USA, eighth generation descendant of an immigrant from Londonderry in 1762
Thank you for this excellent video. Please bring us more of our history.
I remember being told this story as a child and appreciate you retelling it. Thank you.
You're most welcome, I am delighted to be able to recount these stories, lest they be lost in time!
The Minstrel boy to the has gone, in the ranksof death you'll find him. His father's sword he has girded on, and his wild harp slung behind him. "Land of Song!" Said the warrrior bard, "Tho' all the world betray thee. One sword at least, thy rights shall guard. One faithful harp shall praise thee!" The Minstrel fell, but the foemans chain could not bring his proud soul under. The harp he loved never spoke again, for he tore it's chords asunder. And said "No chains shall sully thee, thou soul of love and bravery!" "Thy songs were made for the pure and free. They shall never sound in slavery." This gave me *chills!*
Thank you for this historic account of the Clan. Never to be forgotten
Brilliant video! Very informative. As a child I heard the odd story about these events but never really had a clear idea of the actual history. Thankyou.
An American here my mother was a Daugherty
Wonderful information, thank you.
Thanks mate
Thank you, Charlie. Cahir was a relative of my family, the O'Dochertaig who were forcibly resettled to the area around Kilcar, Co. Donegal. He evidently did his best to keep the peace, maintain his people's heritage, (Ar an ducthcas) and be a loyal subject of a faithless colonizing monarchy. His fate is a cruel lesson to us all.
Thank you... Michael Doherty, brothers, Patrick, Paul, Mark, Tony, Shaun, Vincent, Philip, Gary, David, and Carol to Parents, Mary and Peter Doherty. Proud to have the name.
Glorious it is! From one Daugherty to another Doherty Slàinte Mhaith!
My 10th great grandfather is Sean/John O’Doherty, I go through the line from Liam O’Doherty. Cahir would be my great uncle.
Cahir wouldn't have gotten to "know Londonderry in its infancy", he was killed by the English in 1608, Derry (or Doire as he would probably would have known it) wasn't given the name Londonderry by the planters until 1613.
No mention of how his body was dismembered and head stuck over the gates of Dublin as a deterrent to other Irish clans. 🤔
Hi Gerry. Thank you for commenting. I will be looking into new material for RUclips in the near future and that will include the subject matter here , I will pay closer attention to the nuances of naming you have highlighted.
@@WayoftheStag Great idea.
I remember being told reading through a history book my family name being associated with pig and horse thieves my teacher at the time referred to this as well somewhat embarrassing in a class room, only if i knew they were landowners in innisowen
Greetings from an Australian Doherty
Holy shit cousin you got lost on your fishing trip
Such an amazing story! Well done on the video I say you had a great time running around in the woods with all the weapons haha. I must visit the castle one the days.
Thanks so much! We had a great time and are humbled to be telling his story.
What's more, according to my late cousin Padraig O'Dochertaig of the Crown Road, Kilcar, Co. Donegal, our family are directly of the stock of Cahir. Are you able to do a bit of the story of the MacMenamins, who were cousins to the O'Donnells, and Chiefs of Strabane and formely of Fanad, which most people today probably think of as MacSweeney's territory.
Derry/Donegal some history
Well done are you from inishowen . I have been to the Guild hall and seen the sword and the stained glass O Doherty window as I am a Doherty . Thank you
Thanks for the comment, I'm not from Inishowen, however the story greatly inspired me and makes a wonderful part of our shared history. O'Doherty abu.
Thanks for you're reply , what is abu ? . I have done some research and O' Dochartaigh means the destroyer . I just wonder if it has any Viking roots as the Vikings where around the area ? . Thanks for you're time
He is my irect ancestor through my maternal granmother
Great family history
If Irish people actually knew their history....
"Londonderry" me hole!
Stop European genocide 2023❤
Thank you. "... thy songs were made for the pure and free they shall never sound in slavery." Rise up Ireland and throw off the chains of those who promised freedom and now bring you slavery.
Marry Rose accent sounds a little bit different than yours, is she originally from the other south.
Thank you for commenting, im not sure actually, it's been a good while since the video was made and I can't remember where she was from originally, sorry.
@@WayoftheStag Enjoyed your video anyway, take care.
