Hey I live in Guatemala and I just saw the mini option has been made available for us, seems like here it will be standalone also price is less than 300USD and almost 40/month check it out, try saying you want it for Guatemala.
I am ok with the $30 addon but bandwidth limitations and hardware cost is a non starter for me. I want it for camping and feel that it should be unlimited since my home startlink is essentially dormant while I'm away from it.
It should for sure have more data than 30 gig especially if you have business service as I do....rip off otherwise.

If yours is dormant, why not pack it up and take it with you? Convenience? If you want convenience, its going to cost. Do you have a friend or family member that would want to "borrow" it from you when you aren't using it, for a fee of course?
I have friends who live in areas where high speed internet is lacking. Those friends have Starlink already. They also travel around the country in trailers and often have to disconnect their home Starlink to take it with them. which leaves them without access to serveral internet connected things like ring cameras. This will solve that problem for them. The power options are a plus too. This really should have been a $299 dish though. I could see a lot of use cases for it when they eventually launch a standalone mini plan aimed at campers/outdoors people/travelers that maybe only travel once/twice a month to remote areas.

For $30 bucks a month add on for mobility it seems to be a good deal especially given what’s out there now. Find another company offering more if you know of any because I have tried many of the internet companies out there and Starlink at home has been outstanding without any issues of buffering that I have experienced with other companies out there. Look I don’t like the cost of the dish but all in all it’s still a good deal for some people out there that need reliable internet. ❤ and yes I received my Starlink email for the mini dish service. I am a long time customer of Starlink that’s actually why I clicked on the video to get information about the new dish. Thanks 😊
I just got the pre-order email this evening “ 5:05 pm pacific “ and with no thinking I placed the order.
for the past I was this close to buy the RV Starlink beside my residential Starrlink to solve the overlanding trip off-grind connectivity.
This New innovation saved the day, so I didn’t even think for a moment or hesitated about purchasing it.
So allow me to say this is more than expected with all the respect
I first ordered the Starlink standard on June 2021 and received it and activated it on December the same year with monthly subscription of $80 before it jumps to $220
For the records,this Starlink mini pre-order cost came out to $666.97 paid in full and As per Starlink, it’s estimated to be delivered on June 30th
As a backup, it shouldn't cost more than the primary.
Just got my mini starlink set up- it is still updating and i got it set up on top of my SUV pointing at my condo and i still get decent speeds - i have taken many speed test and latency is anywhere from 29 -39, speeds are anywhere from 20 down to 140 down with anywhere from 5-20 up depending on test - i am watching this video using my mini. I suppose if i were to set it up in an open area instead of my parking lot i would get better speeds- so far it works great and very easy to align- it uses arrow to tell you how much to turn dish and you view it in real time on your phone - it also told me to tilt it up 5 degrees - easy peasy
You miss their target audience: me included. It is for those of us…most roam users…that use another service at home.
Turn roam to home and use current dish to replace other home internet. Then the mini becomes the roam dish. For the same monthly total as roam.

I’m in love with the hardware. The form factor and performance is just perfect for us! I don’t even mind the equipment costs at all. Last year I replaced my router and it was $300 so an all-in-one from SpaceX is fully worth a one time price and that’s just fine.
The terms though is a deal breaker. My wife and I burn through 300GB a month. I can only imagine a family with kids! My best friend is a cord cutter, he uses RUclips TV. I can only imagine how much data he burns. $1 /GB is going to add up real fast!
Small, light disk is good for camping, but how big and heavy are the batteries?

Thanks for all the Starlink content! I got the "magic" email a couple of days ago and your redundancy policy is spot on. Fiber is just being installed. Anyway, I rodered the package so I will let you know my experience once I get it set up. I am a 70 year-old gamer with a 50 year long technical background so "we shall see..." is my mantra at the moment. Starlink has been about 90% good to me as far as streaming FPS games. I live in Washington State and downpours happen. Hopefully, me and my fireteam can play from the campgrounds at some point! What a hoot!
Also 70, and getting back to gaming (FPS) which I was heavy into in 90's and early 2000's but waned because of lack of high speed internet availability where I live. My standard Starlink reopened that door last year, and for this a several other reasons I too saw the mini as a good thing and I am due for receiving mine early July.

Could have been great, but small print killed it. Would love to replace our larger org starlink dish with this for our rv but we only need it for 4-5 months out of the year and cannot use a starlink in our townhome
I would bet my soul that the "add-on" requirement will go away eventually, and a higher monthly cost would replace it. See my other post. AS IS, this is really being marketed for people that want and can afford a 2nd unit for limited use.

My dad is a truck driver and there are many times where he's in areas with absolutely zero service. He was super excited about the mini coming out and instantly ordered it when he got the email. Even gave me a call to brag about it haha

As an RVer without a need for StarLink home, why would I ever want to give up my current version 2 (pauseable) mobile service?
I see no advantage to this over my version 2 roaming.
Being an avid solo backpacker I was very excited about this. Weight is a serious issue when adding more equipment on my back. The dish and stand are reasonable but looking at battery banks capable of producing 20v 5A PD output are around four pounds putting us in the 7-8 pound range is probably a no go for me. I am a mobile customer already paying more than residential users. With the cost of the mini and additional $$ per month this is a definite NO for me. Too bad I was really drooling at the prospect.
I would be ordering this today, but I'm not signing up for a ceiling on Data. Not going to happen. Limit me to north American, ok that's fine, limit me to this being a secondary unit. But, don't limit my internet TV viewing..... Passss...

Considering it's brand new & the goal of "launch" type things is to recoup costs, I think it's okay. I've personally been craving a cheap, monthly add-on service. It being the Mini is a plus. I'm okay with the hardware cost being one of the selected people. My only issue is the 50GB limit. In my opinion, since it's an add-on, I think that 1TB cap before throttle should apply to the account as a whole & that's it. Mine was ordered before I even got the email. 🤣

I’m not a Starlink customer now, but I follow your channel to see if this might someday be an option for me.. This Starlink mini is a no go. With a limitation of only 50GB this isn’t for me. I know you were talking about a back packing .. but if I took this on vacation and used it while camping, it’s still not enough. My wife and I use from 500GB to 1 TB per month now. We are heavy streamers of video. So my bill would be very high based upon $1.00 per GB after 50GB . Thanks for the information about Starlink. Your channel is interesting… we carry 1 iPhone, snd 1 iPad each, and I so do carry a laptop. On months when there are lots of many OS, and app updates you can use 6-7 GB or in just all the devices update for OSes then add in app updates. Another 10 GB (We gave several 1 GB apps each), streaming movies and videos… the 50 GB limit might be used up in a few days.

This is what I was hoping for, minus the $599 starting price. I pay $150/mo so I can take my setup camping and traveling, but having an addon like this has potential since I can have the preferred residential plan AND still travel. Unfortunately with $599 starting price and the 50GB limit makes me hesitate. Mostly the starting price.
Being able to keep this dish attached to my trailer and my main one attached to my house is awesome.
I personally think if this is the route they were going to go, they should have treated it has the same dish as the residential one, and you transfer service between the two when camping or or traveling
This is going to be great for me! I lived in a van for a few years using the gen2 permanently on the roam plan, mainly using cell and unpausing roam when I was going to be off-grid (mainly in spring-fall). I just recently moved into a rural area and bought the gen3 for my residential plan, and was planning on keeping the the gen2 on roam for the van, but knowing I would take a $150 hit each if I wanted to camp out of signal was tough. The mini will solve this problem! I rather pay the extra 30 a month to have the ability to use this whenever I want, for both short or long trips in the van. The lower footprint and power usage are both a huge plus as well.
It kind of sux how expensive the equipment is, especially now that I have a gen2 that can probably only sell for 200. However, I like to think that it helps subsidize it for the rest of the world where people make a fraction of what we make here. Growing up in Colombia I know how unobtainable it was to buy things at US prices (electronics, skateboards, etc) on a Colombian salary.
I'm guessing this is to iron all the bugs out, and within 6 months, maybe 8, it will be available as a stand alone device, with unlimited data, at the normal prices.
Why would you think that? That has not been the case with regular Starlink. They want more customers and more revenue.
If they were to make it standalone, they would likely have data limits. As is, in theory with this you'd get roaming and for $150 you'd get 170 Gbits of data,
I'm sure they would prefer to have data limits because the system is not unlimited. In the end, there is a cost to move all this data. So, real limits do exist. When you have plenty of excess capacity "unlimited" accounts are not a big deal, but as more and more users are on the system, this can become an issue in peak periods. In theory, having limits allows for more customers in the long run and more revenues.If your capacity struggles keeping up with demand, you have unhappy customers! Not good for business. What the satellite system can move is only part of it because it has to then connect to the internet. So you can get ground station limited too. Having satellite interconnections too, can help balance the ground station traffic, but it still uses total bandwidth. and it creates another hop until it gets to a ground station.
I have no idea just how close they are to the practical capacity, but they are spending money to get a lot more satellites in orbit. These do have a limited life of about 4-5 years. It wouldn't make a lot of sense to have too much excess capacity

Cons for me are that the monthly service can't be paused, won't work outside USA, not unlimited data, overall price, won't work in motion (big one) on the regular plan and the mobile plan is too expensive to even consider. I would have loved this. But, with all the restrictions, it's difficult to justify. Hopefully they work some of those kinks out to make it more accessible and inviting to especially their long time/current customers interested in this add on.
Starlink Mini a world changer? Not. If Starlink Mini is tied to a regular account, it is the regular account that is world changing. Starlink Mini is a luxury. And a data limit makes it a non-starter.
I have the home service. I also have a camp and this will be perfect for me. I have enough cell service to play music, but this will let have a firestick run on a rainy day.
Hardware cost and use within US only is a big no for me. Would be great to take this to the remote areas that it's built for.
In Colombia the mini is $200 USD ($800.000COP) and you can get as a standalone unit and the monthly service is $37.5 ($150.000COP)
I pay 30 dollar extra and my standard plan becomes a roaming plan unlimited. Only down side it's power hungry in the RV but the 12v conversion kit is 200 dollars. I'm talking australian dollar.

Maybe they will open it up as a stand alone package once starship is being used to launch satellites and they launch the version 2 maxi. My thoughts are right now. They may be thinking, if the mini is an add-on, you are not likely to be using a lot of bandwidth on both dishes at the same time. Increase revenue without major increase on the system.
Once this becomes stand alone with no limits, I will take this. I live in the city with much better options but would definitely use this when traveling.
I got the email, looked at the 50GB cap, laughed and deleted it.
They should offer unlimited data with the Mini. They are already charging a premium for it and you have to have an existing account available to get it at the present time. Why go for that when you can just get the ROAM for less money upfront (or pay it in monthly increments) and pay the same monthly with unlimited data?
IMO this is a test run. They want to see if there are enough people out there who will willingly pay for extra data and if there are they will expand it to their other plans. It will be like the streaming services who once offered unlimited access commercial free. Now you pay EXTRA for commercial free because people went for it and it’s become acceptable so now you are charged twice as much for something that was once reasonable and standard.
If you think a paltry 50GB is worth paying for and then being put in a position to pay EXTRA for more data is acceptable then go for it but IMO, we as consumers need to draw line in the sand and make it known that this is unacceptable. If enough people turn this down they will change it eventually but if people roll over and do nothing then be prepared to accept more of the same in the future.
Data cap is an issue.
I don't see how emergency services and some of the others you mentioned will be able to utilize this unless either 1: They already have a Starlink home kit or 2. Starlink makes an exception to certain agencies.
They will probably make it available to certain business customers, like non profit government agencies. It would be a good way to drum up more business customers, and once they get them, they'll pretty much have them locked in.
Carrying panels or a decent battery backpacking may be a problem.
The business class/High performance unit-system is what I have at my home with the priority speed service,here in Tokyo,Japan.. Speeds are far faster than Any in North America,and as fast or higher than any in Europe/EU.. The cost was $2500/US $ for the equipment, and I pay $90/US per month for service. Depending on day/hour no less than 384MBPS up to 512MBPS anytime all year around.. And this is secondary too my main service/the back-up to it. I also have this same setup as well at my business.
I got the invite and mine arrives tomorrow.
Works for me. Add on for RV travel. Curious to see if I make a mount.. or set it on the dash.. or leave in a pelican case. I'm sure there will be lots of ideas.

I too got the mail this morning on the mini. I also gave them my exact comment in a email to them about the pricing. Have not heard back a rebuttal.
After sending my email to starlink about the mini, prices an so forth. Starlink sent me a email claiming they did not send me an email offering the unit or pricing. I just laughed an walked away.
Thank you for the info. I ordered mine. We travel in an rv a lot and have to keep the home starlink running for security etc. This is the perfect setup for us and we'll save some money because we can cancel our 4g hotspot service. I hope the built in wifi will reach into our camper?
I think your situation is the exact target audience for this package.
My initial thought is perhaps they made it an add-on service because they are in new data management territory with respect to their available bandwidth and dishing it out over a new market with uncertainty as to who will use it. If they were to have launched the service separately and priced it comparatively to cellular based Internet, they might potentially create a mass migration to the newer, smaller product away from their larger antenna offering. I personally would like to get rid of my Home Starlink, which I use only as a back up to my primary land-based provider, and have a service that I can use while in motion in my vehicle or camping that can also be used at home to provide Internet in case of an outage with my existing provider.
They did it because they continue putting up more satellites and need more revenue. It's easier to hit up existing customers than to get new ones.
I have Starlink for my home and am very satisfied with it. I'm not sure the mini would fit my needs with only 50 GB of data since I would be using it primarily for outdoor podcasts. If they do away with the data limit, it would be perfect for me.

Heads up, starlink sells the mini but with different narrative in latin america. They describe it as their cheapest option yet, and its a standalone. I have to say this is starlink's usual MO, they have different policies in different regions
I didn’t know they are selling it anywhere but the US as they normally test in the US first and then release to other countries cheaper.
That's not a starlink MO, that's an international business MO. Look up subscription costs for things like Netflix or RUclips premium in other countries.

This is a big let down for me. I wanted to get the Mini along with the roaming plan to use as I am a full time van lifer. In that case, I'd be paying the same as if I had a Standard dish. That's why I don't understand why Starlink is not offering the mini as a stand alone unit. Maybe they will in the future. I wanted the Mini for it's size and power requirements, not because it was possibly going to be less expensive, although that would have been icing on the cake! Oh well, back to waiting to get onboard down the road. Thanks for the update!

I wouldn't care about it not being cheaper, the most important thing is the smaller size and lower power consumption. But surely it should be available as a single service not as an add on. Only 50GB of data though, really ? I understand they have to be a bit picky with roaming devices as they have to supply enough capacity to areas where there are dishes. When it's a fixed place the provisioning is a lot easier than when there are many people moving around.
Well, I received my Mini invite letter. The good news is that JC's thorough review on this device provided me sufficient info to make an informed decision. I'm prefectly happy with my GEN 2 residential plan, so I'll take a pass. I've also already got a 10,000 watt onsite dual gasoline / propane generator for backup. Imposing data caps and charging $599.00, feels like a (stinky American) cash grab to me, so no danke. ***Our first 10,000 orders will be shipped ahead of July 4th. Remaining orders will take 2 to 4 weeks to ship.***.

Since the router is integrated into the dish, I'm wondering what the range will be like especially if you need to keep the dish at a place to get the least obstruction

i just got an email from Starlink offering the new Mini and they said that there was a 50G max data per month. I don't recall you mention this and is th first limitation Starlink has required so far. Just a heads up!
The introduction description states:
“Our goal is to reduce the price of Starlink, especially for those around the world where connectivity has been unaffordable or completely unavailable.”
However the current terms of the purchase states that you must already have a home starlink kit. I’m confused. How does this help potential users with underserved internet access?

I'm thinking Starlink will rethink this. 50GB at that price, plus you need another plan. Ouch!!! RVers ad responders will burn through that quickly. Reason I haven't bought Starlink yet is as you said before, "What is the price I'm willing to pay" for the service being provided or rather for the service I will use. I spent around $700 to set up a cellular modem system in my RV. Bundled the plan with my cellular for $15 a month unlimited data (no caps). So far that has worked well even in wooded areas. I would like Starlink in my arsenal, but it needs to be equal or better speeds, usable in motion, no or a lot higher data cap with best effort and as a stand alone plan that is able to turn on/off the plan. I'd pay the $30 if it met those criteria, but so far all the plans for mobility option are not worth the investment or monthly cost. Same for the residential plan for which I'm on fiber. That was no equipment cost, caps, 1 gig up and down for under $80 ($50 with military/ first responder discount). If Starlink created an affordable mobile it would sell fast.

At the current state of things, the standard dish with Roam plan is still the best option for me. I've converted the system to operate off 12 volts (elon is behind the times here) so I can use it when out camping/RVing, traveling, etc. SO, there is no reason for any RVer to jump on this.

I got the invite email last night. I really do have a use for the Mini out at the ranch. I would be willing to add $30 per month to my Plan cost. However, the $599 buy-in, and the 50gb limit data plan are deal killers. Very disappointed.

I packed up my motorized Starlink system on my carry on suitcase from Maui to my new home in the state of Nevada. Attached to tripod and plugged in. 5 minutes later internet. No buying a modem and calling internet company to activate. Never gone down vs my previous land based internet that was always on/off due to weather or company issues.
After the Lahaina fire last year, one month before land based internet back up and running. Starlink just needed a plug. Starlink connected Lahaina to the world again. Stores had a way to bill with satellite based system while land based down. More Lahaina citizens and structures could have been saved with satellite warning. Police and firefighters would have communication at least texting.
JC Thank you for another good video from you on the subject. For me personally, investing another $599 into an unknown future of Dish Internet is way too much money. Starlink makes a lot of changes within a short period of time which makes me worry about my investment, first; the price of the plans was changed (and it was not downpriced) second; the price of the equipment, and now they trying to hook us up for more money out of your pocket with this addon peace of the equipment and additional price for usage of it. I’m sorry Starlink but I’m not using this service for business so it is not worth it to pay more for less. Again, this is my personal opinion.
Two is one, one is none. I currently have 3 ways. Starlink being the main, AT&T DSL being the backup. And AT&T cellular connection thru Samsung DEX. Yes it only works on the computer it is connected to but when power is limited ( it is Hurricane Season ) the laptop and phone will keep me in touch. And it works at 79MPH while on Amtrak.

Except for the 50GB per month cap, this is great for me, I too am a relatively early adopter of residential Starllink, but I also have an RV I travel in perhaps 65-70 days per year, 1-3 weeks at a time. Having this Starlink mini while traveling would be a great backup to the LTE cell hotspot and RV campground wifi we have been using for the last 6-7 years.
I would probably even be ok with 50GB per month if it were bankable from months where it had zero use.

This is pricey :-/ But it may have potential as a communication device for advanced preppers. I have fiber to my house but considered Starlink even though it was more expensive since if the balloon were to go up I could power it from solar and have access to whatever internet might survive.. However on further consideration I decided that if SHTF were to occur my Starlink might be taken out by EMP strike... the only sure way to protect the gear would be EMP proof storage but then you would be paying the monthly fee and could not use the equipment since it was in storage.. but this option would mean your main starlink gear could remain in use while the mini was kept in storage... it would be pricey but prepping is a pricey affair already and the network access would be priceless in case the worse were to happen. So, this may be popular with well-heeled preppers.. as further details become available I might opt for this.

May as well just use the nearest phone tower otherwise only any good for people going to places with no connection . Not always the case you pay far less in the states for some things.
There will be wider marketing later. This is version one, they don't want to put out (sell) too many out of them initially because they'll have to support them. They want to get the final bugs out just in case there are final bugs. Later, maybe 6 or 12 months from now, you'll be able to buy it without the standard.

As I noted in the prior video, you're better off with the roaming service using the original dish - same monthly cost and unlimited data. Better still, I believe you can upgrade your current plan to roaming at any time using the same hardware.

My son is photographer for National Geographic going some crazy places, where there is no internet access, question is is mini can be used as mobile unit, or use in different location for moving objects for high resolution pictures or video transmission?
Oh ya. This is revolutionary, certainly for many.
Can see an application/benefit for emergency services use but is an oxymoron in that their price point misses the smaller, rural departments that are restricted in funding, more so than urban departments. AT&T does offer a “FirstNet” option that has some benefit (if you can reach their 5G signal) but extremely limited in the more remote areas. Preppers and some people in the boonies, maybe beneficial, but must have the $ and the need for the mini or it is just hard to justify - personally. As usual, good info and thanks for the updates!
I impulsively ordered it when I got the email because I do a fair amount of camping. Now that I have looked into it, I'm a little hesitant and considering canceling it because of the 50gig data plan...
If your camping, then you should be using less than if you are sitting at home streaming? I use way less, and reserve camping data for essentials, like email and the occasional search...
I have the roam grandfathered from my original plan.... I wonder if I can just roam with the mini since it's additive? Thoughts...

Yeah I work on a ship, my company is fitting Starlink to the ship but only giving us crew 1.5gb per day. This would be good to add to my own personal Starlink account, I'd be happy to pay the extra £30 but I'd want it to match my unlimited account at home and also would it work out at sea although my personal account is residential at my home.

I got my email today, and coincidentally it came at a time when I was looking into travel options, and also needing to extend internet to far reaching parts of my property (wi-fi extender to my standard or Verizon hotspot just not up to the task), so I bit and my mini is due to arrive between July 4-8. After finally retiring recently, and turning 70 and, God willing, still in reasonably good health) have been day hiking (or rather half-day hiking), so the option of stowing the mini is appealing.
Great play, we’re out where it’s very rural somewhat near Yellowstone and bringing in 4 400GB links by MW to our data center on build out. Ultimately, we’re putting over 200 miles of redundant fiber and Starlink around the ranch will be useful. Our fiber buildout will take a couple of years while the “doomsday” operations center is built.
Since when did smaller tech mean cheaper tech? I think what they've done makes perfect sense. I've had a mobile regional plan at $150 per month and it's been kind of a bummer to disconnect the remote property when I needed to take starlink with me on the road. Now I can put the main system on the fixed plan at $120 per month and spend the additional $30 per month on a DC powered, much more portable solution, so I will get far more use for my $150 per month than I did before. Would I like the gear to be cheaper? Sure, but I get that an initial release and packaging all that capability into a smaller package is going to cost something.
My guess is that this is temporary special marketing and pricing. i.e. Sell first to those who both have a house and want convenient internet for travel, too.
Hopefully, when they have increased production volume of this hardware, prices will come down and additional types of plans will be available.
They definitely need a plan for permanent roamers, those who have no fixed residence but live in an RV, and/or travel continuously in any sort of vehicle. There are a lot of people living like this now ... some wealthy, some poor, and everything in between.

I'm not a fan of the 50G limit (or any limit).
(For your future videos) I am curious about the capabilities/features of the built-in router and I also wonder how I'd use it when traveling with a metal-walled van. And/or what kind of repeater(?) I would need, perhaps in the cab to transmit into the back. There are definitely tradeoffs with a built-in router.
I have two standard and one roam now. If I buy a mini and did not renew the roam monthly, savings of $90.00 monthly.
Woot they are shipping out all ready all ready put my second dish with the roam package on pause this option will save me about 1400 bucks a year since i will go from paying 270 a month down to just 150
