    Go for the open shelving! I think having it on the one side will look great. PLUS it fixes your door swing/ pendant issue.

    Regret #6 dark countertops. Yikes, I cleaned mansion’s for 18 years, I hated cleaning dark countertops. I love how they look, bit no sooner do you wipe them clean, they look dusty again. Everything-I mean everything showed up on dark counters, dark wood, dark floors.
    I do love what you’ve done, you have really thought of all you want.

    Hi, about 8:42, I think you can still swap the hinges. I did for my end cabinet and it was easy.

    • @EmilyGarbe
      @EmilyGarbe  Год назад

      Yes!! My dad figured out how to switch it 😅 I shared a more recent update of our kitchen remodel and “solved” a lot of these regrets ☺️

  • @sdw2248

    Hey Emily....for the upper cabinet door you are concerned about hitting the pendant light, you can get "stops" added to the hinges that prevent it from swinging past a certain point. We had them added to our custom upper cabinets from Home Depot that we had installed in the laundry room. It keeps the cabinet knobs from slamming into the walls.
    Also, I believe it would look very nice having the open shelves to the right of the window. Kitchen don't have to be symmetrical....they just need to look purposefully driven. Have a reason behind what you do and it will look "right" to your eyes. 😁😁

    You have done a great job so far . It will be beautiful after adding countertops and backslash. I like your idea of removing that cabinet and replacing with shelves. MY question is why didn"t your designer tell you that spacers were needed and the orientation of the door swing ? That"s the designer job. You are doing a great job working around the obstacles.

      I agree! Whoever was the person at Home Depot should've caught some of this. 🤷‍♀️

    • @EmilyGarbe
      @EmilyGarbe  Год назад

      Ahh I agree! But I have found that problems can get fixed faster in our reno if I step up and figure stuff out myself or accept responsibility for fixing it. I’ve always taken on a lot of responsibility and always try to be the first to say sorry and fix the problem. That said…. I do think the designer we worked with wasn’t the best, and I now know what to look out for in the designer themself (unfortunately)

    Hi Emily. I love your idea of taking the cabinet to the right of the sink down and putting up open shelving. With the cabinet to the left of the stove, could you take the cabinet door off so that you can access it easier to get your spices. Just a thought. Can't wait to see the full reveal!

    The apron front: I have had 2 of them in 2 different homes and the trick is to use barkeepers friend. Gets ALL the scratches off and makes it look brand new! I am not careful with mine at all.

    I would do the open shelves. That cabinet looks very heavy hanging there and closes off the window too much. Aaaannnd, it may be too late now, but I would also remove the narrow one on the left, and instead of that corner upper, be flat against that back wall. I mean if you’re gonna do the laundry room anyway… it’s not a total loss. So those 3 cabinets btwn the fridge and window, out. And just do a double cabinet flush against the back wall. And you don’t need anything to left of the window, you can still just have the open shelves to the right. Also, the HD designers should’ve advised you on spacers. Can’t you flip that door and move the hinges to the left? I hate how much planing we do and we don’t really know until we’re living with it. It’s looking good, keep the faith 😂

    😍😍😍really nice … White concrete the counter tops and change the pantry shelves to pull out shelves?
    Considering open shelving can also depend on if you have enough storage space for the things you have so you can lose a cabinet.

    If that sink is enameled cast iron then it doesn’t need a screen at the bottom to prevent scratches but rather a can of Bar Keeper’s Friend under the sink to use to wash away any marks.

    • @EmilyGarbe
      @EmilyGarbe  11 месяцев назад

      Haven’t tried bar keepers friend! It’s fireclay…? But bleach seams to get off anything!

    • @marjoriegraham9885
      @marjoriegraham9885 3 месяца назад

      I was hopping on to say, if you’d purchased the sink 20 years ago it would likely have been enameled cast iron. But now they are almost all fire clay- which means ceramic. You just need to be a bit more careful with it. The cast iron were pretty indestructible. Fireclay sinks will break if you do something like drop a Le creuset pan in it

    Great job! Open shelving has pro's and cons, often based on who is planning to live in the home. They can look very cluttered if someone like me were to be living there. 😂 What does your mom think about the idea? One plus, keeping the cabinet and putting it in the laundry let's a buyer move it back if they choose!

    • @EmilyGarbe
      @EmilyGarbe  Год назад

      My parent nixed the open shelving 🤪 understand able as we don’t have a TON of cabinetry storage and they would want that. And I’m not so sure my husband would be on board to keep the shelves aesthetic hahah so I think you are totally right about that!

    Emily, how did all these measures get messed up?? Didn’t you work with an experienced kitchen space planner at Home Depot? did they come out and measure and the screw up was on them??

    • @EmilyGarbe
      @EmilyGarbe  Год назад

      Yes… about Home Depot I’ll just say I don’t think all their designers are equal. I worked with another one to fix some of these problems when mine was unavailable and it was miles better! She made suggestions and gave so many options. But that said it’s still a hit “DIY” when you go through Home Depot because you take your own measurements. But their math didn’t add up and I didn’t check it over. It all worked out! I will know what to go in with for my expectations next time!

    Overall I think you are doing a great job. I think all your tips/regrets could have been avoided if you had slowed down and were not so excited. I know that is hard to do but I believe a person should live in the current space BEFORE renovating kitchens or baths. The reason is you don’t really know what you want/need until you see how the space currently works for your family or you are older and have lived in multiple homes to know what you absolutely need and what you absolutely hate! I did the renovation on our kitchen after having lived in multiple different homes and I knew exactly what I could and couldn’t live without. For the first time in our marriage my husband and I can say there is NOTHING we would change in our kitchen. Not your fault I know you both are young and we’re so excited to tackle it. Next time (if there is a next time) just take a breath and try and live in the space and see what you like and don’t like!

    • @EmilyGarbe
      @EmilyGarbe  Год назад +1

      Thank you!! Ahh congrats on your dream kitchen! It definitely takes time and practice to figure out exactly what works and you like. In this I one we couldn’t wait until we moved in unfortunately - just with two toddlers at home every day and it not being functional as is. But DEFINITELY get that point! I’m sure there will be a next time 😉
