An interesting fact about Ian's "crumbling"min this match: his first loss was a 136 move long game, while his three losses following that totaled to only 134 moves. It took him more moves to lose his first game than to lose three after it.
Every single game: *Ian plays E4*
Levy: R E A L L Y S U R P R I S I N G
Yes, it was surprising, for that exact reason. Nepo always plays that. And everyone thought he would change that and go all in.
Except when Ian played C4

I have so much respect for Ian after this match. No other top-level chess player would have handled himself in the press-conferences like he did.
well he blundered 3 times tf. one 2 mover one 1 mover and this one is just bs. give him all sympathy as u wish.this was the worst WC match i have ever seen.Watching chess from 2012.
@@shreyaskumar9175 Damn dude, I didn't know you could watch the 2021 WC from the past! Welcome to the future.
For me, my hope quickly lost for him and then turn into despise. He should not have been there. He just got lucky in Candidate. He is a disgrace to SuperGM
@@hellup He is saying that all WCC from 2012 to this year, Magnus-Nepo WCC has to be the worst and I completely agree. There is nothing factually wrong here. 7.5-3.5, compared that to past WCC.

I finished the recap, and I wanted to add that I’m glad, levy, that you’ve been so respectful to Nepo despite his mistakes. Some of the hate against him around the internet is ridiculous and seems almost personal, and it’s annoying to me that people would disrespect one of the world’s greatest chess players like that.
Yeah some fans were absolutely terrible. Armchair quarterbacks ruin every sport
It's wild. Maybe he could have tried some more adventurous stuff but then maybe also he'd be out by game 9 instead. It's hard not to blunder over the course of a few hundred moves, especially with how tricky magnus makes it. The big blunders were a bit unbecoming of him but also truthfully didn't matter much, he was already in a pretty bad spot. Everyone seems to have forgot how insanely well he played in the first few matches
@@Pattonator14 People are always going to complain about something. It's my belief that well adjusted people don't act like that. Sure he lost, but it is overall a net positive for him. I'll take an L for a 6 figure check any day of the week.

You could literally see how distraught Ian was in the final press conference. Brutal way to lose, but the man was pure class. Congrats to Magnus on a solid match.

the problem is that Nepo is in such a tilt that he makes blunders that anyone like above 1600 should see
@@onniruusunen9444 Nice try, but you’re no where near his level. Ian only really made 1 blunder this entire tournament with the move b5. Pretty sure anybody below 2200 routinely makes small 1 pawn blunders like this (just watch Danya’s speedruns). Also the 1 pawn blunder isn’t huge but he’s playing against Magnus, that was the blunder, not necessarily the pawn itself. Against most other players he could’ve made a draw even with that “blunder”. This game he already gave up, didn’t even care to stop Magnus’s pawn. He sees it. Don’t think you’re better at chess than him lmao. There’s also zero chance you or anyone below 2700 would’ve stopped Magnus’s pawn advance in game 6 too. Who knows how many 2700’s could’ve stopped it either. For you to put 1600’s on such a high pedestal, I’m thinking you’re below that rating talking smack about a world champion challenger. Learn some humility and sit down.
Congratulations Magnus, much love for Nepo but we finally know for sure that the true GOAT is Magnus's twin brother, Cagnus Marlsen

I knew this was coming. Ian just looked exhausted and defeated most of the time after the first 8 hour loss came in. Magnus just looked calm and collected - despite being obviously tired after the games, but Ian's body language gave away that he was sort of losing the battle mentally with the huge pressure piling on as the odds narrowed with every game.
Agreed! Game 6 was the real decider of this match
It broke him but totally understandable
Yes. It's really a shame to see him get rolled like this. I wasn't rooting for Nepo, but wanted to see an epic series. It ended up essentially a rout.
Perhaps players should have the ability to postpone one game each, especially when you have a marathon game as we did in this championship.

He's as cool as his hair, and that's pretty cool.
As a Norwegian I'm very happy for Magnus, but still I feel very bad for Ian, and would've liked it to be more of a fight. Seems Ian never recovered after game 6.
As a Russian I'm very happy for Magnus too, but Ian, what was humiliation. I don't understand what happened. Ian just broke up after game 6
How common is chess in NORWAY and Russia? Do kids grow up playing chess? Is it the biggest sport there?
@@MrSirBoastAlot I can only speak for my family in terms of how it was growing up. We've always owned chess sets, and played it casually since we were young. But I never learned about strategy or tactics etc, just knew how the pieces moved and played with my parents, friends or grandparents for fun. :) But there was definitely a "chess boom" in the country when Magnus was up for the world champion title. And Norwegian tv channels have had a chess studio with commentators every year since, for almost every big tournament, with an average of over half a million people tuning in to every game. Which is like 10 % of the population. When he defended the title in 2018 almost 800 000 people watched the final game! So Magnus definitely popularized it up here. :)
(But the biggest sport is 100 % cross country skiing, which we also grow up doing from we are very young!)
Congratulations to the GOAT Carlsen for his performance.
Nepo showing in defeat how much of a class act he is has gained him a lot of respect.
Why do they call him "GOAT"? Please explain me. :(

@@samuelusrestrepus No problem.
Chess is often described as the 'pure, mathematical' game that relies only on analysis and all that, but we must not forget there's a psychological aspect to it too.
And that's what seems to have hurt Nepo, after losing that marathon of a game. In a format where draws are commonplace, he didn't just happen to lose games after games like that due to a lack of chess skills. Seems more like he was completely out of it, he wasn't there.
It's a bit sad (and I don't see why people are being mad at him, it's not like he's doing that on purpose). Anyway, fun games, and good reviews!
Even if he didn't do that on purpose, you can't deny you kinda have a "Who let him in the championship?" feeling. Nepo was kind of playing his moves really fast, and they caused the blunders. It is hard to keep on going after losing like that but he could've like played some gambit and had fun in all or nothing style instead of just playing out a few quick matches. I can completely understand why people would be mad at him. He just threw away the only opportunity to see the king's gambit in a world championship. He could've even like kept on going with normal openings, but he didn't; as shown by how much time he spent on his moves. The blunders were caused by Nepo losing his will and playing too fast, and people will surely be mad at you for not trying hard enough.
And the psychological factors you mention apply to many other situations too, other than chess games. Are you more afraid to lose than your desire to win? Which will you listen to?
@@shambhav9534 I mean he did beat all the candidates to get here so… he deserved to be here. It was just a cold streak. First 5 games were good, all draws. After he lost the big game, he never regained his footing
@@lik7953revisiting his match since ding v ian has started, and its just depressing to watch Magnus take a somewhat early lead and see nepo crumble after that, the first loss was 136 moves, his next three subsequent loses were 134 moves all 3 games together. Ian had the mental strength to battle against one of the greatest chess players ever for 136 moves, but lost that fortitude after the first loss, and then that blunder in game 7 or 8 I believe where his bishop gets trapped. Imagine being a super GM and just making an elementary blunder like that in the most important match of your life at that time, it’s just shattering to think that you allowed yourself to do that. Anyways, I’m very excited to see the new world champ after this ongoing match, both very deserving players even en lieu of Magnus declining the opportunity to hold the title for the 6th time.
This guy now runs the largest youtube chess channel. Your hardwork payed off.
It is only now as I'm watching all these games that I realise how goddamn strong and precise Fabiano must have been when having been able to draw all the main games in 2018.
In all fairness he played pre-infinity gauntlet Magnus. Now that Magnetos has collected all his infinity stones(especially Dubov stone) he is unbeatable
Magnus was at his worst
I like how levy is consistent with calling Knights horsies
I have been a fan of Magnus for nearly 15 years, but I can't help but feel bad for Nepo. He totally crumbled after this one loss. He showed in the candidates how strong he really is, but in the end he couldn't handle the stress. Congrats to Magnus and let's see who will win the next candidates tournament (is supposed to start in Summer).
Four wins in a six game stretch. Total dominance at the super GM level.
nepo was blundering left and right.

Its not that nepo did not do his best
its just that his up against THE GOAT of classical chess.
I cant believe a checkmark didnt get tons of likes
Mmmm I don't think b5, Qd8 and c5 are his best but yes
Karjakin and Caruana tied Magnus in the classical games. Nepo collapsed. Let's not sugarcoat it
It’s he’s not his. Also it’s not its
First 7 games Nepo played great, even the loss in the epic game 6. But the losses in games 8, 9 and 11 were horrible. Probably 3 of the worst losses of his career. Just multiple all-time epic blunders to give those games away.

I agree mate, good suggestion. A series about previous World Chess Championships would be so exciting to watch, and would provide Levy with a new content idea
It wouldn’t be as enjoyable since most people would already know the results of the games.

Congrats to magnus and respect to nepo
Agreed, this match has 2 sides, a very solid Nepo until game 6, and a broken distracted Nepo afterwards.
The only 2 consistants were Magnus almost perfect play and killer instinct and Nepo's class act behavior in the press conference.

Levy, I just want to write that I looked forward to each one of your recaps. Any beginner could have gotten as much out of the recaps as a seasoned professional...you were that articulate in your explanations of what was occurring and what should have occurred. I've been playing since I was 5 years old in the late sixties and I couldn't be happier for your success. The work you put in reminds me of a famous quote that success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Levy, what do you think about hosting an otb tournament for fans? It would be a great way for you and us to meet other fans and you could make recaps talking about the best games from 200 to 2000 elo chess.
Also, I already asked this question in Twitch and you didn't answer but I got some positive feedback in chat so I decided to do this here again. So if you saw it already and ignored it, I'm really sorry but, you know, one never knows in Twitch...
Lets gooo
didnt he so stuff like sub battles and yt vs twitch subs
Man, Magnus still trying to describe his feelings in the press conference!
Levy: gotta go fast!
come on, ju-ju-just make a move. make a move!
Thanks Levy for your dedication. Recaps have been awesome as usual.
Also, like your acknowledgement of Eric's part in the event.
Thanks for all the recaps, Levy! You do a great job of breaking down these high level games for intermediate players, and it is much appreciated!!
Another Levy “it’s literally mate" Rozman classic
I was pretty proud of myself while I was watching this live, because I did spot Qe4 in that endgame! Feels good to learn
just found your channel today. i was busy this morning and didn't get to watch the game. you did a great job covering the game and i just subbed.
All of these were great! Thank you for the break downs and teaching moments
It would be easy to say that this looks almost like an humiliating performance for Ian but indeed I guess that with this format of 14 games Karpov would have crushed Kasparov in ‘84. Just to say that it’s strange how external conditions affect the future and our impressions
true
I think if Kasparov knew that there only 14 games in the earlier match, he would have played the first 14 games differently in that match.
@@williamvanbenschoten5150 surely, but kasparov, as he admitted in an interview, was surprised by how good karpov actually was so I still think he would have lost that match
Playing an opening that literally translates to "the most quiet game" when you need a win seems... odd.
He should have gone for the Nakhmanson Gambit
It's actually "very quiet game"😎
he would have won with the scholars mate, always work on the 600 battlefield!
@@pietrosurace5616 "very" and "the most" are often the same in romance languages, it is called a superlative
@@swank8508 But they're not in this case.
This was a crazy world championship, I was lucky to catch game six live but I have to always come for the Gotham recap. Awesome shout out to Eric Rosen too, thanks for the 10 out of 10 coverage Levy.
This Match series is the first time i watch anything from you. I must say you are not only a guy with a bunch of knowledge and even for me as a noob I can understand a lot - but also you pack all of that in a pretty funny manner. Keep it up man
Since this match is now over, can you make videos on past world championship matches that you haven't covered yet? It's been a while since you've done a chess history video.
Congrats to magnus and hard love to ian.
I'm addicted to your channel. You do an excellent job teaching, describing and your videos are always very formatives. Thanks Levy.
Thank you so much Levy for all the WCC recaps. I was not able to catch them live. Cheers!
I never felt like Nepo could even hope to win, but i never thought he would lose THIS badly. A pity, but we get at least another WC match with Magnus
Yeah but tbf he held up very well until the end of game 6
@@thegreenlaser5784 yeah but then he just collapsed
He came through risky games, due to the initial defeat, apart from the fact he's taken the consequences of a few blonders in summary. Mainly because of the stress. He has not been neither bad nor, as you dared to say, pity. I acknowledge the superiority of Magnus, but you should also have a bit of respect.
@@veirant5004 what i meant is it's a pity the match did not last longer, precisely because i greatly respect Nepo and his skill
@@edoardoprevelato6577, in that case, I apologize, my friend.
What I will remember from this match is the most accurate game ever played in a world championship match. Even that was not enough to defeat Magnus. After that, when Nepo lost that grueling longest game ever battle, he lost psychologically. Very tough match... when you lose a game to Magnus who hasn't lost in a world championship match against anyone for so long time, the pressure must be immense and the challenge to win almost unsurmountable. Chess is so delicate if your mind gets even a little imbalanced, it will be tough to keep up your best game. I guess Nepo just straight up decided to create imbalanced position, even with great risk, rather than going for a quiet draw. And what else could he try at this point? No point in playing for certain draw and losing match almost certainly.
Thanks for all your hard work to provide these recaps. I truly enjoyed them all.
Can't believe how quick you got that recap out. Have really enjoyed your coverage of the Chess World Championsships. Good to know that even Magnus can overlook the best move.
Great end to the championship, Great commentary by Levy too, the games accompanied by Levy's commentary made the championship a absolute thriller
Thanks for all the EXCELLENT recaps. I love your content. They should play some more games just so you can keep doing these recap videos.
Great ! Ive been following every analysis you did from the WCC. And watched the videos from beggining to end. Greetings from Argentina!
"Shout out to Eric Rosen" - Acknowledgment and Appreciation are two hard things to come across. I expect no less from you Levy and shout out to Eric!
11:30 the way levy says brutal instead of bad shows how much he respects Ian
Your recaps are the only content i watch related to WCC. Absolutely incredible insights and also being totally respectable for Ian irrespective of his loses
Thanks for the hard work. I really enjoyed all the recaps, been waiting a year to check out this tournament. Just a bit sad that it’s over so soon, but that’s the game. Anyways, thanks!
Can we take a moment to appreciate danny, fabi, and hess making the streams so much fun to watch (on twitch)
Howell and Houska from Chess24 also did a great job, as well as GingerGM when he was a guest
may I add Judit, Anish and Anand?
@@99bskr they were on the youtube streams, I watched the twitch streams. But yeah, props to them too!
I prefer Howell from Chess24.
I can't believe Magnus won the match. Ian was losing 5 matches against Magnus but Magnus somehow managed to win
