I am an attorney. A date wasn’t provided, but there was a time, not long ago, when a six month sentence in county jail for possession of less than 1-2 grams was the low end of average. Federally, and in many states, marijuana is a Schedule 1 substance.
Currently in Texas, 2 grams or less is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days (six months) in county jail and a fine. Ten years ago, it was likely much higher. I’m nearly certain it was a felony in Texas in the not so distant past.
All of this is to say that that it wasn’t unusual for people who used marijuana recreationally to receive outrageous sentences. There aren’t any reasons for the commenter to lie.

However, in reality, if it wasn't for these pleas the courts and prosecutors would be bogged down with actual trials and us tax payers would pay a hefty fee. A lot of times it is in the best interest of all to give lower level offenders a second, third, and maybe even fifth chance before the hammer comes down. Honestly, there is no good solution here.

Parents allowing children to drop out of school and NOT getting an education ..... allowing them to run wild?.... they're just sitting them up for failure as an adult.
Granted some ... SOME, very successful people have dropped out of school and went on to create things. Big difference between a genius and a punk.

If you keep making empty threats these punks have no reason to change their behavior because there are no consequences. And this mental health issue excuse is getting tiresome. Yeah, the court is really helping him get his sh!t together. Enough playing around and just do some time in jail. If he wants to get better, how about he shows some initiative?

He's like a zombie. No expression on his face at all, and he can hardly speak. There's definitely something wrong with him. If he needs more treatment than the jail can provide, then put him in residential mental health facility until he's well. I think Judge Boyd was too lenient on this one. I happen to *BE* a psychologist, but I certainly don’t have the information you seem to have gleaned after watching a 25 minute long video. Theorizing is fun as long as people understand that-unless they proclaim themselves to be RUclips geniuses-because their their overall understanding of anything regarding these cases is ZERO, they’ll do it for fun without second guessing THIS judge, especially. For example, I have some ideas about this recreant’s possible psychological issues, but I would never watch these little cases to “diagnose” anybody, even if I _have_ had 7 years of training, 25 years of experience, and probably 100 hours of continuing education, if not more. *These are REAL PEOPLE,* after all….not Guinea pigs.

@@debdanton2295 Until he turned 18, mom was not legally able to evict him. When you have a child who is anti-social, your hands are tied in a lot of ways. For over 50 years, parents have been civilly liable for tens of thousands of dollars when a minor does damage, even when the parent has no knowledge or involvement with the destruction. With a certain level of knowledge, they can now be held liable for criminal matters. It’s heartbreaking to have a child. You’ve done your best for who nevertheless, more often than not, due to mental health issues, start on the path of destruction, property, people, and themselves.

@@debdanton2295 She can now, but she’s had years of legal obligation to support him when he was a minor. Parents who have walked their kids onto school property, only to have said kid walk out the back door, nevertheless face fines and jail time for uncontrollable truant minors. Parents in California were liable for up to $35K in civil damages if their minor child destroyed property or committed other property crimes. There are terrible parents but there are also terrible kids, most of whom I believe suffer from undiagnosed mental illness/disorder.
