PoE is great, how many times I’ve heard of had people tell me they wanted me to install “wireless” cameras.. I’m like it’s a hell of a lot easier, and better to run a cat cable than it is to put an outlet or run an extension to every camera location, besides, people can RF block wifi cameras. Bad thing is, people can gain wired access to the network through the cat cable, but using vlan and/or MAC address filtering helps with that issue.
Yes indeed! That is exactly how I set up my cameras. I paid a contractor friend to run the appropriate weather-rated shielded CAT6 cable, and now I don't need to worry about flaky wi-fi or running power to external places.
Lots of great examples of PoE! That's a nice Cyberpower UPS you have, and they offer a 2000 VA unit for just a little more than than the 1500 VA. Some PoE switches from Netgear for example, have 8 or 16 port units that are either standard PoE, or with a higher power budget: Extended PoE. Part numbers are GS316EP or GS316EPP. VOIP adapters, or IP telephones also support PoE.
Thanks...that UPS has served me well through all kinds of power flickers for the past year, providing between 1 and 1.5 hours of cushion. Our area has a history of reliable power, with the longest outage of maybe 8 hours when hurricane Sandy came through. Nevertheless, that didn't help me last week when the power company decided to change out a pole on the corner of my lot and shut down the street for two hours! Eventually the UPS was depleted and everything went off.
