  • In November 1992, Cameraman Mike Benson and his assistant, Chris Duddy, joined him for a shoot capturing Kilauea's Puo Event in a helicopter. Their team included Craig Hosking, a highly experienced Hollywood pilot known for flying aircraft and helicopters for filming and stunt work. The crew aimed to capture the perfect angle, leaning over the edge and feeling the intense heat as they maneuvered the camera. The first attempt fell short of expectations, prompting the need for another take. Suddenly, a gust redirects the toxic fumes toward the helicopter, engulfing it swiftly. Craig can’t see, and he’s inhaling sulfur dioxide that burns his throat and eyes. As he attempts to steer away, the engine sputters and dies due to lack of oxygen. The helicopter begins an uncontrolled descent, plummeting toward inside the volcano's crater.

However, the way you are describing things is my new goal in English level. In Japan we rented a four-seater cessna and flew towards Mt. Miharayama a volcano island and tourist destination not far from Tokyo. We circled the island then the pilot decided to fly over the volcano. That didn't happen, the voracious updraft blew us away. It was a rough ride but we landed in one piece... never did that again.

I've hiked up there over 200 times since 92. Back then there wasn't anything to see because of how far down the small lava lake was from the vent rim. There was constant steam and a thick plume of toxic gas. It's generally a cold wet area with gusty trade winds. They made bad decisions that day. Always hire a knowledgeable local before attempting stuff like this. A simple consultation over the phone would have prevented this from ever happening. I would have said, don't do it. The conditions were terrible that day. I've been up there numerous times during zero visibility. The rescuers couldn't do anything until they could see.

HW reps, executives, and directors don't understand the meaning of NO, DON'T or WAIT. HW has had more catastrophes than most industries, you don't hear about it much because they've perfected the art of covering up, usually done with money, threats and NDL's!

Not to mention the increase temperature also raises density altitude to a point where you do not have as much lift by the rotor.
Below the outer rim of the crater, you are actually in a confined space. Without air flow, to evacuate the noxious gases, your survival is seconds maybe minutes. And not many of them at that.

In such a case: Bad luck!

Ok but is no one going to talk about how they intentionally disregarded the local authorities? They were only permitted to tour the edge - They were specifically told they were NOT permitted to fly directly over the volcano.
Not only did they disrespect the words of the local experts and authorities, they did it TWICE. And THEN expected the same authorities to risk their own lives to come rescue them.
And why did they do this??? Because they felt entitled. That simple. They felt they were more invincible or capable than the local POC authorities. Would they have disrespected the words of authorities if this volcano was instead in Russia? Doubt it. Hard.
