We are all capitalists now. For the first time in human history, the globe is dominated by one economic system. In his book "Capitalism, Alone" leading economist Branko Milanović explains the reasons for this decisive historical shift since the days of feudalism and, later, communism. Surveying the varieties of capitalism, he asks: How did capitalism become the dominant system in all parts of the world? And what needs to change for capitalism to deliver a more equitable future?
Branko Milanović is senior scholar at the Stone Center on Socio-economic Inequality and Professor of Economics at the City University of New York. He is one of the world’s leading experts on income inequality. In the past he served as lead economist in the World Bank Research Department and as a senior associate at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington.
Branko Milanović was in discussion with Ivan Krastev, IWM Permanent Fellow. The discussion was moderated by IWM Rector Shalini Randeria.
