    In this episode I talk about picking the right fin template for your Small Wave Performance Surfboards. (SWPB)
    I first define (SWPB) category that most of the major board brands are making.
    I try to separate the SWPB category from the Groveler, Daily Driver and HPSB categories. Picking the right fin for what you want to achieve as a surfer in each board category can be easier just by identifying fin template, wave type, and your skill level.
    We hope this episode helps you find what you are looking for in a set of fins for the way you want to surf on your Small Wave Performance Board.

    Again awesome work. Makes sense I'm gonna get a black baron or a seaside but keeping it small rather than too much foam which I did last summer, which was great for catching waves but it ruined my surfing great advice man thinking 5 .8 seaside or black baron looks loads more fun but construction just pu and one dimensional rather than the seaside works in so much by the look. Test driving a seaside 5.8 next week 🤙

    Appreciate the clarity in how you've organized the knowledge. Ever look into fin cross section/foil? Supposedly dulling the leading edge reduces drag because the water isn't being forced to "decide" which side to take.. plus it's safer. Also how thicker foils are faster and hold better.. or maybe not. Then there's the lift and/or grab effects of curved or airplane-wing type foils. Gets complicated but maybe some fodder for future shows . Cheers !

      David, you may want to watch vimeo.com/169888589
      For instance, in it Tyler recalls how pro surfers did not like the more efficient foil profile of the nexus fins (as proven by water tunnel testing) but preferred the traditional felling of the flat-sided side fins. They found out that it was just the rounded leading edge: just rounding the sharp leading edge of traditional flat inside foil fins make them not like a fin anymore.

    Noel, just an idea, you can take it or not if you want. Love your channel. think it’d add a bit more variety if you grabbed an old school / vintage board every now and then ( twin, tri, or single short board ) and tested It out and reviewed it. Could be real interesting and add something new instead of new surfboards. Just a thought. You can point out their flaws and attributes, what surfing gained from that particular board in the evolution of design ( say Vee, canted fins, whatever)…. A lot of those boards ride real darn good and they’re cool. It’d be interesting for sure.

    I'd love a short vid on thruster vs Quad. Specifically, the very basic reasons why you might alternate on the same board when it has five boxes. My shaper wants me to add two boxes to the last board he made having watched me surf my local. What will the benefit be? Escape the lip, get down the line quicker with a bit more speed and hold after take off? And how does a quad affect your vertical turns so you know what to expect?

      @@surfnshowreviews7777 omg.. thank you for the quick response you guys just straight-up rule in every category. I've been surfing O'Neil suits forever and always try to make it on the memorial and Labor Day parking lot sales to get a deal. But even with waiting in the huge line you can end up with manufacturer errors or my size medium tall /large always being sold out. I was born and raised in Santa Cruz and know the whole story behind Buell wetsuits did the math and I could get their top-of-the-line suit and booties for 310 whereas if I walked into O'Neill's without any sales it would cost me 610 easily if not more. When in the shopping frenzy sometimes you forget the small stuff you just reminded me about the Smoothie blocking the offshore winds which are quite prevalent in Santa Cruz in the winter. Hey Noel. Great video, as per usual. What is your opinion on mixing fin types? For example sticking Large Accelerators on the side, and a medium performer in the middle? Say on a groveler in 2-4 ft surf, as a large guy (6'4" 200).

    • @surfnshowreviews7777

      I do this on my everyday hi performance shortboard with fcs2 AM fins on the sides, and a reactor center fin (more pivot than the performer and am2) but with all mediums.. board feels great and refreshingly different. never thought to use a smaller center fin for more slide in the tail, though. i really ought to play around with the fins more.

I have noticed the Sampler is getting too big for me and holding me back (5'10 x 31L) I am 6'1 x 174 lbs. Would a 5'8 rocketwide (30.3L) be a better option for me? Thanks in advance :)

    Super helpful and informative Noel, as usual! I would love to get your thoughts on fin size. I think it's presumed (maybe just by an uninformed me) that bigger waves/bigger person = larger fins but I think there is more to it than that. I switch between medium and large fins but I don't have to skill level (or consistent waves on the east coast) to ascertain the differences. In general I feel like I move faster with medium fins, even paddle easier. But I'm also a bigger guy (6'2", 190lbs) so should I be sticking with a large fin?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Год назад +3

      I think what you like about Medium fins is less drag in the water. So a medium fin feels loose and responsive due to less fin in the water. It has less overall fin area and the fin doesn’t go as deep into the water compared to a Large fin. So you can put your board where you want quicker. However a Large fin offers more resistance (pushback) so when you feel that stiffness you can push harder through turns and generate more speed. There is a fine line here…. Sometimes a Large fin can make a board feel too tight or stiff and make it hard to turn quickly and that’s why a Medium fin feels better.
      With all this being said that’s why I designed my own fin templates. Check them out here… nothing like them.

    Thanks Noel for the reviews! Super helpful, and your input has helped me find both boards and fins that maximise my surfing. I live on the east cost of Aus, and we tend to get a lot of beach breaks, often with peaky sections followed by flat sections you need a lot of drive to get through. I have a neck beard 2 and plugged some al merrick large fins I use in my hpsb on better days but found they lacked drive in the flats or on smaller days. I was looking at the neo glass performers or the mick fanning neo carbon as options for more flex and speed, I’ve seen you enjoy both, any recommendation for the conditions I ride and in the neck beard? I’m 180 pounds intermediate plus

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  4 года назад +2

      Nick Hewett NEO Performers will pivot and carve well but they might have too much flex and offer inconsistent turns. Maybe go MF NEO Carbon and if they feel tight put in the AM center fin to loosen it up and offer a little more release.
      A better option is to put in the Al Merrick Twin plus Trailer on the NB2. Excellent speed, pivot, and drive. If you don’t have those then try whatever Twin + Trailer you do have.

    • @sandyfootwell
      @sandyfootwell 4 года назад +2

    Hey Noel
    First of all, thank you for your videos, keep up the great work!
    I recently bought a lost driver 2.0 (6.1', 30.15L) and it felt good on some waves (3-6ft). I used my every-day fins (Shapers AM1 carbon stealth, riding Nr. approx. 5.5), but in some sections i felt too stiff. I usually ride my boards smaller and with less liters (5.11', 29L), but i bought the driver 2.0 for smaller summer days, so i don't lose performance. I weigh 166 lbs and i'm 6.3'. So what do you think, if i try the Legacy P8, to make the board looser? Or do you have other fins in mind?
    Cheers
    Kevin

      The P8’s will go good but I think you will freak on my Pivot Twins. Nothing out there like my fins. Check them out here…
