  • So, you've probably heard of Windows 7 Starter, which was the low end and limited version of Windows 7. But did you know that Microsoft did the exact same thing almost 5 years before with Windows XP Starter? This video takes you through this very interesting and unique version of Windows, and shows off the things that made this different from the standard Windows XP release.
    ==========================================
    Notable Limitations:
    Only 3 programs could be run at once, each allowed to have 3 separate windows (Total of 9 windows allowed on screen at once)
    Maximum resolution is said to be 1024x768 (although in the VM I was able to go beyond 1080p)
    Limited to 512MB of RAM
    Limited to 120GB Hard Drive

    There are some certain reasons for this special settings. As I started to teach my grandparents how to use computers(2006), they were quite confused when too many windows were opened. And extra size of cursors and icons do help the older people. After one year they were used to all the things with computers and I installed a full size windows for them.

  • @TolerableDruid6
    @TolerableDruid6 5 лет назад +16

    The cursor is large because this edition was not only intended for third/second-world countries, it was also available pre-installed on notebooks in first-world countries. So the large cursor was to make it easier to see on notebooks.

    I've heard that there's a new version of Windows 10 called Windows 10 S. Is it a low-end version of Windows 10, just like this version of the Windows XP, Vista and 7 operating systems?

    • @MichaelMJD
      @MichaelMJD  7 лет назад +25

      +CEO100able Windows 10 S is a little different than these Starter versions. It's very similar to Windows RT, in that you can only run applications in the Windows Store. So you couldn't, for example, download the full version of Firefox or Microsoft Office, unless you pay $50 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

    • @CEO100able
      @CEO100able 6 лет назад +6

      Wow, that's strange. I was just wondering if Windows 10 S was designed for the same exact purposes as Windows XP, Vista and 7 Starter Edition. Thanks!

      Windows 10S was intended for schools and workplaces (where you don't want users to be installing software that could potentially damage a computer) in that you can't install non-web based applications, I believe.

    I remember they used to sell notebooks with Windows XP Starter even in Walmart stores (here 🇧🇷 they were called BIG back then) and I’m 100% sure that version of Windows ended up being used as strategy by manufacturers to make more profit over less informed users. About legit copies, I only see them in enterprises, at my job the server room has over 10 boxes of Windows XP for example, while home users are most likely to have a 🏴‍☠️ copy and they probably don’t even know or either care about that anyways so... That strategy had everything to go wrong, they had to pay workers to take an existing version of Windows and put these limitations and removing features while they could just offer an existing version for a price more people would be willing to pay for. Another factor is that regular people don’t buy OSs and install themselves, they pay someone who knows how to do it, they buy machines that already come with Windows installed, so computer manufacturers probably saw Starter as an opportunity to make more money offering a machine with Windows Starter for the same price as one with a normal version... 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

    I never had any reason to care about the Windows XP Starter Edition, but I was one of the first to use Windows XP Professional x64 Edition on my then-new AMD Athlon64 Dual Core system. That was a version of Windows XP that was also rare. Many people believe, that Windows wasn't available in 64bit versions until the release of Vista or 7. That is because many manufacturers shipped their 64bit-capable machines with 32bit versions of Windows XP for quite a long time. Some because they didn't have stable 64bit drivers yet, even more because of licensing costs - there was no 64bit Home Edition.
    While Windows Server 2003 32bit was an enhancement of Windows XP 32bit, Windows XP Pro 64bit was a step-down from the even newer Windows Server 2003 64bit system. And I must say, it was quite good!
    Only hiccup was that some programs demanded Windows XP SP3 to be installed before they could be installed and run officially. However, there is no such thing as SP3 for the 64bit edition, since the whole system is approx. one service pack newer by default and there is only SP2, not SP3, while SP2 has everything that SP3 had on 32bit systems. The software installers were just too stupid to tell the difference betwenn the systems.

    • @omsi-fanmark
      @omsi-fanmark 4 года назад

      @Samuel Giam You are referring to Windows XP 64bit Edition, I am referring to the x64 64bit Edition. The first was for Itanium and had very little success (like the whole Itanium platform), the second was for the AMD 64bit x86 Extensions, for the 64bit systems we all know today. The first architecture was IA-64 (completely incompatible with x86 / IA-32), the second was x86-64, also known als AMD64 or EM64T (Intel) and is still downward compatible with 32bit x86 code.

Also vista starter had completely different default wallpapers included to the other editions. 7 starter got rid of that annoying watermark too that was in XP & Vista starter.

    Let's be honest, the limitations are to prevent people from importing Windows from a developing market where it's cheaper (it's standard price would make it unobtainable) into a large market like the US where the software is incredibly overpriced.

      I'd love to actually get real versions of XP Starter, Vista Starter, and even a netbook 7 Starter if it wasn't so expensive.
      The reason for the first two is that I already use and love those Windows systems, and I'd like to see what they'd be like for me personally with those limitations since I never do anything intensive on Windows anyway.
      Windows XP Starter seems the most limited, with the resolution, the memory, and the program restrictions. But all those would be fine with me, and I might have fun trying to see if I could get around any of them with simple exploits. Plus, it might have more lightweight operating requirements, making it usable on computers / laptops that stutter with the full version.
      Vista Basic would be great to try because I already have Home Basic SP2, and since Vista Basic is limited to 1 GB of RAM, which Home Basic wouldn't do so well on, it sounds like VB is MUCH less intensive and could run a lot better.
      I don't use Windows 7 much (haven't for a while actually since college), but having a small netbook with a minimal version of it installed would be a fun thing to play around with.

    They have the preinstallation of Windows XP that compressed into the GHOST file for recovery. Bundled with general drivers and softwares that people use the most every day. The concept is like the OEM Recovery disks that was given by the manufacture companies. And in mainland China Windows XP has the most popularity than Windows 7, so they won't prefer the Starter Ones.

    This would fit Pentium III hardware as some motherboards were limited to only 512MB ram. Also they did not provide Bios support for drives over 120GB (Without adding in a new controller card.) But I consider this OS to be pointless cause I've had great success running the ordinary XP on Pentium III hardware with a 700MHz-1GHz cpu or 192MB to 512MB ram. Only 3 programs can be used at once? Screw that! What if one of the programs needed a 4th one to open in order to function? Would it crash the system or what?

    • @andreg011
      @andreg011 3 года назад

      You should just use Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs, it actually designed to work on older hardware and doesn't have restrictions on how many apps you can have open at once

    • @geo58impala
      @geo58impala 3 года назад

      @@andreg011 I tried it years ago, but found it misses some .dll files, so a number of games will not run, such as Empire Earth for example. I now recommend using XP SP1, it uses about the same amount of memory as Winflp (Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs) but also less memory than the later XP service packs! XP SP3 uses about 256MB of memory on idle, so just go for the earlier SP1 version, or even XP with no service packs installed. Try it, it will be faster on your system. These older versions of XP were designed to run good on the older computers that were in use at the time of their release, so it was common for people with 500MHz and slower CPUs to report good performance. This info is from the comment section on an old website I found from the early 2000's, back when XP first came out. So as long as your XP PC doesn't go online, you're good. These earlier XP versions also consume less CPU power too. Only problem is: the newer XP programs will not run because they require a later XP service pack to be installed on your system, but you're going to be installing this earlier XP release on really outdated PCs (like those under 1GHz) so it won't matter much, because these newer XP programs may not run on your system because of their heavier hardware requirements. I put XP SP1 Pro on a 450MHz Celeron, 544MB ram, 30GB HDD, 4MB graphics Gateway Solo 2550 laptop and it still runs well offline as a retro gamer machine and the XP SP1 install is over a year old.

    Back then, I read that this version of Windows was created to keep piracy down, but it was a complete flop because it did the opposite. People were mad that a normal product you paid real money for was intentionally crippled, so they just kept on pirating the Professional version as usual. There was really no reason, other than to push people to buy the more expensive versions, to have so many limitations that were actually added to the software because they didn't exist in the Home version, unlike the Professional version which just added things that weren't inherently present in the Home version. Microsoft kept this trend with Windows Vista Starter and Windows 7 Starter during the time when "netbooks" were popular (mid to late 2000s), but that actually made that segment of the PC market disappear, which now has been populated by Chromebooks running Chrome OS.
    Microsoft really shot themselves in the foot with that strategy, that's why there's no Windows 8 Starter. They tried doing the same with Windows 10 S but that also failed spectacularly. Nowadays Microsoft doesn't really care anymore, so you can just use Windows 10 forever without activating it with some limitations. I don't know if that trend continues with Windows 11 tho.
