The fact that girl became anorexic just to feel loved by someone is so so sad

The beauty standards in China are so extreme, it’s so sad honestly. I honestly don’t get it!😭 and you’re absolutely beautiful

@@Ant1quedoll Thank you for the compliment. I also find it hard to understand the current beauty standards. Almost all female celebrities, and even male celebrities, are getting so thin that they're just skin and bones. Many stars mention in interviews that they must undergo rapid weight loss before starting new projects. I think this is extremely unhealthy. As an audience member, I just want to see high-quality work, not a "model show."

Celebrities and stars are supposed to be doing their own work, not focus on their weight! It’s getting to an unhealthy degree and it’s starting to even affect kids, it’s sad. I really hope things get better.

I personally think that the main problem here is the modern day obsession with "idols" and "idolization". The whole system of telling (and showing) young people that there is only one way to be beautiful/succeed in the industry pushes them to such extreme. This unfortunately continues the cycle and makes the mold of "pretty " more and more unachievable. There is no problem with wanting to be skinny but when the whole society is putting that pressure on you, then it becomes a problem as you override your personal views to conform to what others want (which is never good enough/always changes).

Yes! You're absolutely right. The entire industry now trends towards valuing external beauty over inner qualities. I find this very sad, as it instills the wrong values in children. Those who do not conform to popular standards experience significant psychological struggles and external criticism. This process is really challenging.

The thinness that Chinese women are trying to aspire to is honestly dangerous! Also, you look amazing. You seem to be a healthy person that is naturally on the thinner side. This seems to be a trend all over Asia. I say this because other countries emphasize thinness to an excessive degree too. Hope this trend will change. Unfortunately, women all over the world tend to experience the pressure of beauty standards.

    You're beautiful by the way!

thank u❤ Some influencers are gradually advocating against appearance anxiety and body shaming, which I think is a positive trend. As women's awareness increases, many Chinese girls are starting to embrace a stronger and healthier body image. However, the overall direction of society still needs to change.

The lowest weight I got to was around 37 kg. I was dieting and exercising for about 2 years to an extreme. I eventually stopped by myself and made a full recovery. I have no lasting health issues from it. The only thing is that it took my period 1-2 years to come back afterwards. And I was slowly putting on weight again, back to normal weight(50-55 kg). Not that I overate, just simply that the body always wants to stabilize itself after years of starving myself. So if you are recovering you should expect weight gain, but do not think of it as bad, think of it as your body becoming healthy again. It seems that when people starve themselves down to 18-25 kg that is the point where people get so ill they eventually die. it's scary!

Genuine question because I'm not familiar with Chinese culture: with those extreme beauty standards feeding into the obsession with being extremely skinny, do you know how Chinese people view an*rexia? Is it more normalized there?

I'm an ABC (american born chinese) but I think I can put my two cents here. It's very common for Chinese relatives to say 'you're too fat you need to lose weight'. One instance I can think of recently was someone I worked with saying that her dad said she was too fat. She's much skinnier than me and she barely eats anything during lunch. To be honest I think she's at a healthy weight, or maybe even a bit underweight. And I gained weight recently and my mom constantly nags at me saying that I'm too fat. She'll talk with her friends on the phone about how I'm more heavier than her now. My relatives will say similar things. On one hand, Asians have a smaller BMI range so having higher BMI is more dangerous for us. On the other, even skinny people will be called 'fat' and that's a dangerous mindset

When I was a teen and I am also 165 cm, I weighed around 55 kg. That was my normal weight back then anyway, without starving myself. I don't think it's too far fetched to weigh 47 at my height, if you are naturally skinny. Body type matters alot in how much you weigh too.

@@zebnemma I understand that 55kgs can be healthy for some body types but there is a big jump between 55kgs and 47kgs

It breaks my heart to hear about these cases, especially as someone who has once struggled with disordered eating too. Although I made a full recovery, life had other plans for my digestive system as a h.pylori infection changed the way my gut works forever :/ now I can't truly enjoy food even though I want to, it's devastating. I wish those girls soon realize just how important taking care of one's body is
