    Modifiers are words, phrases, and clauses that add information about other parts of a sentence-which is usually helpful. But when modifiers aren’t linked clearly enough to the words they’re actually referring to, they can create unintentional ambiguity. Emma Bryce navigates the sticky world of misplaced, dangling and squinting modifiers.

      +txvoltaire The grammatically correct way of interpreting this is to understand that being in the attic is attributed to the Grandpa. The noun that is being modified should always follow the clause ending with a comma.

    In particular, news headlines can look like that because in journalistic writing, you tend to avoid the passive voice. This is so perfect. I got into an argument with my dad about this yesterday. We were travelling back to the USA and had to declare the amount of goods we were bringing back through. The sentence, don't quote me, went along the lines, "Report the amount of total goods you are bringing back into the country, including presents or gifts purchased abroad." I took that as to mean, the amount I left with as well as what I was coming back with as it said "total" and my dad was convinced it only applied to items purchased abroad. I put down a guess as to how much I was bringing back and my dad put 0.00. We both got through ok, but I feel as if that modifier at the end made me correct and him incorrect but maybe it is just poorly worded overall. I would also like to reiterate that the sentence I provided is not verbatim but a vague recollection.

    Or do it like analytical languages like modern vernacular Chinese where modifiers, both adverbial and adjective, have regular and expected places that are just right before the verb and the noun to be modified respectively, the downside of which is that you have no way to use adjective clauses after a noun, which in turn makes it nearly impossible to write in Chinese long sentences like this one or those in German in a relatively clear and unambiguous way.

    The last sentence could much more easily be fixed with commas; for example:
    “Robbers, who steal chocolate bunnies rapidly, attract the outrage of onlookers.”
    Or “Robbers, who steal chocolate bunnies, rapidly attract the outrage of onlookers.”
    And of course if it’s modifying the robbery, you could change it to “Robbers who rapidly steal chocolate bunnies attract the outrage of onlookers.”

    • @LunasofficialMum
      @LunasofficialMum 2 года назад

      Not really.
      The first sentence is a jarring comma splice, and the placement of the comma is just absolutely wrong. I mean your sentence shows that the robbers are stealing the bunnies in a rapid motion, and it has nothing to do with the outrage of the onlookers. Not only this but encasing the middle info between commas is also wrong; commas are only used to encase a piece of information that is not necessary to be included and is extra. If "rapidly" is modifying "attract", why are we separating them?
      The second sentence has the same mistake; the middle info is not extra; therefore, needn't be encased in commas.
      The third sentence also does not make sense in this context. "Rapidly" here is used to describe that the onlookers were "quickly" enraged; it has NOTHING to do with HOW the robbery took place. Unless of course, the purpose IS to describe a rapid robbery.

    This can be quite a lengthy discussion, seeing as the said modifiers are complex and really require their own explanations: words (adjectives), phrases (infinitive, participial, prepositional) and clauses (relative). Not to mention, appositives (a type of noun) can as likely be misplaced.
    I think, when one has gotten acquainted with the different types of modifiers, he/she would have an easier time grasping the video. There are a ton of material online about such topics.

    "Having robbed the bank in the record time, it was possible to make off with the town's chocolate bunny as well" This is correct since it is a conditional statement in the past tense, but it does not specifically state whether the robber did "make of with the town's chocolate". You could convert it into a non-conditional statement by saying "Having robbed the bank in the record time, the robber made off with the town's chocolate bunny as well". This statement is absolute in meaning, rather than the correction given in the video which is show the robbers perceptions.

    The title can actually have more meanings as it’s unclear what is meant with “with”. It could be that the town was robbed by the robber using a chocolate bunny or that they did it together with it.

    Help. The fixed sentence at 1:12, "Town with world's largest chocolate bunny robbed by thief." It doesn't necessarily mean that the thief stole the world's largest chocolate bunny, right? It could also mean that the thief stole something else from the town that just so happens to have the world's largest chocolate bunny, right?

    02:17 - A simple comma, put before or after the word rapidly, will solve the problem.

    • @ThePaperFlowers
      @ThePaperFlowers 9 лет назад +4

      +kpacuBua No it wouldn't. That would be a comma splice, unless you were to change the meaning of the sentence.
      "Robbers, who steal chocolate bunnies rapidly, attract the outrage of onlookers," suggests that all robbers rapidly steal chocolate bunnies.
      "Robbers, who steal chocolate bunnies, rapidly attract the outrage of onlookers." does the same thing.
      "Robbers who steal chocolate bunnies, rapidly attract the outrage of onlookers" is incorrect because if you take out the prepositional phrase it becomes a command: "Robbers, rapidly attract the outrage of onlookers." ("Robbers" takes on a different function in the sentence; instead of being a subject, it's the person being addressed in a command.)
      This is the problem with relying too heavily on commas - they change the meaning of the sentence, and not always in the way you want them to.

    • @kpacuBua
      @kpacuBua 9 лет назад +2

      +ThePaperFlowers Hun, I've been a teacher ever since I can remember. A comma (indicating a pause between parts of a sentence) solves the problem. Nobody would ever interpret the meanings you are suggesting in your comment.

    • @woodfur00
      @woodfur00 9 лет назад +1

      +kpacuBua Nope, Paper Flowers is right on all counts. You argue that "nobody would ever interpret [those] meanings," but one has to assume a writer means exactly what they say or communication falls apart-that's the whole purpose behind syntactic unambiguity.
      Just because you can prefix your statement with a patronising pet name and claim to have no memory of your childhood doesn't mean you can't be wrong.

      I guess it's just because it's confusing to read.... To my knowledge it is not grammatically incorrect, but some people might say otherwise. (Also, a sentence shoudn't end with two forms of congugation side-by-side. Try putting quotes around the actual sentence in the sentece you're trying to say. I.e.- "This is the sort of English up with which I will not put!" "This is the sort of English with which I will not put up with!"?
