- Join us as we delve into the fascinating narrative of how Indians were brought to southern Africa as indentured laborers starting in 1860, rapidly increasing in numbers over the years. By 1875, 10,000 Indians had settled in the colony of Natal, growing to 100,000 by the turn of the century. Despite facing opposition from official policies, many Indians chose to remain in South Africa even after their contracts expired, shaping their own destinies against all odds.

Fascinating how no matter which country or time period, minority foreign groups are treated the same if they achieve success
This is the history of my family exactly..
The middle class Indians of South Africa have over the last 30 or so years have been leaving South Africa to go to Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Gt Britain. Many are successful in these countries as they have learnt the hard way, in South Africa, of being a minority. Their social skills seem to be in New Zealand better suited then their Indian born diaspora. The SA Indians have had to be aware of the Afrikaners, British and African tribal communities and the political power struggle between them all.
good video... I knew Indians were prominent in South Africa but never delved into their history...
Best educated in South Africa even at the height of apartheid. The Indians here ensured that their children were highly educated. Lawyers, doctors and very well represented in all other white collar professions. So much so that they have now been removed from the Affirmative Action programme which historically was Black, Coloured and Indian (BCI). The ANC government now believes that they do not require "protection" despite being subjected to the exact same discrimination. Just because they have done very well for themselves. Go figure....
Most excellently researched and presented 😅
Wonderful.
Thanks
Prof. Sowell's pronunciation of the provinces' names is quite impressive. i guess that is to be expected from an impressive man, though.

Every person has an opinion about certain topics, but would be great to talk to other people who live in those areas before you assume your opinion is great. Mr T Sowell
So tell us your perspective. Will be good to hear.

He mentions Gandhi, but conveniently ignores his view on the blacks. Lots of Africans consider him racist. They removed his statue from the University of Ghana because of it.
Exactly, Gandhi was a racist who hated black Africans, but she took refuge in South Africa and asked the British to have Indians to replace black people under the pretext that they were incapable and were also brutish and violent.
Gandhi was British loyalist. It’s y he was supported so strongly by them. Never suffered any real punishment like d rest of Indians did.
@@RojaJaneman He was an upper caste educated person. That is why he was upset that in Natal the British treated him like a black person. He "trained" himself to have better self control by sleeping next to two underage naked girls. Can you imagine the reaction if someone would do such thing today? What did he say when in the beginning could not maintain self control? Ah well, maybe tomorrow I will be able to control myself?
@@thehun1234 Gandhi's are backward caste , otherwise known as OBC, so stop with your upper caste vitriol
@@manish7897 I thought he was Baniya, which is not OBC.
and before the 1860s ,they were brought to SA as slaves and prisoners of war, when the British still practised slavery.
As a South African , growing up in Natal in the 60's and 70's i can attest that Sowell's description is pretty accurate.
However , somewhat downplayed is the friction between Indians and Zulus. The Indians had a reputation as dishonest businessmen , taking advantage of the uneducated and naive Zulus. Zulus would trust whites before Indians. This is a large part of what led to uprisings against the Indians by the Zulus during the apartheid years.
Even today , there are Indian billionaires which have accumulated wealth through dubious means.
Indians do work hard and many earn their money honestly but their reputation is damaged by some that have gained wealth dishonestly.

Why did they not get Africans ? They are on the african continent.
The Africans did not want to work, they preferred their current lifestyle.
@@gbone7581 they were in the mines
@@mikeb4178 The mines only started recruiting blacks around 1901.
There is so much in this that is incorrect!
Such as?
Yes, do tell.
didnt those tsavo lions eat mostly indians? i remember thinking hey theres sure alot of indians in africa lol
Couldn't stand the smell of the rest
There were a lot of Indians in other parts of British-controlled East Africa as well, e.g. in Kenya, and what later became Uganda, again mostly in the cities. Similar to emigrants from Ireland, I suspect it was mostly grinding poverty (and intense overcrowding) in India that led most of them to try life on a different continent.
@@davidbarry6900 yes im aware now a days...brits brought indians there to do the work they didnt want to do......lenin and stalin through their own citizens in the gulag to force them to indusrialize russia..1/6 people went there...thats a diff kind of effed up

I do not understand why people think apartheid is a bad thing. diversity is not a strength. being with like people is much safer and more productive.
I guess cause they oppressed the Blacks.
But in 2024 I think we should all live in our homelands.
