Curious as to why the 4.0 flat-6 sounds so much different than the 3.8 flat-6. The particulate filter only attenuates the sound, it doesn't change it. Removing it from the 718 will make it louder, but it will still sound different than the 981 and I'd love to know what design changes between the 2 engines cause the difference in sound.
Just did 1000 ks in my 987 3.4 Boxster S. Love the sound of a naturally aspirated flat 6 Porsche. I’ve driven a 718 and didn’t like it at all. Too much tech and felt remote after the 987 Boxster S which feels much more direct and driver focussed. The four cylinder engine sounds like any other four. The word on the street is the Porsche is going to go back to six cylinder engines in the Boxster and Cayman and not before time.
Steve Congrats on the 1K! I have the same engine as you in my 987.2 CS. I’m a big Cayman fan, so would have to say my ideal Cayman is a 981 GT4. However it’s such a shame I can’t spec one new according to my spec... good thing then I don’t actually have the funds to buy a GT4 ;-)
It's what they sound like inside when driving that really counts. 981 sounds good but how many track days will that fail noise limit test for - a lot is the answer! 718 would be better for passing static noise testing for track, which is where the car should be used. In car sound will be most important to hear, but 981 wins the annoying the neighbours test!
Nick Williams You have summed it up well. The 718 GT4 is louder inside because of the engine noise ducting they have done, however the 981 GT4 sounds more honest and menacing.
@@MAXREVS OK. Interesting. Are you saying that Porsche are piping noise artificially into the cockpit like BMW and others have done through the speakers, or just that the 718 GT4 noise induction is louder anyway and this filters through to the cabin more than on 981? Either way, will be interesting to hear both from inside the car on a back-to-back test..
they`re both same, and the fact with the downforce is at top speed, and even on the NS this is semi-relevant. more relevant is the fact that the 718 has done the lap with new spec N tires. and there are guys that drive the same times with their 981s. the cars are even. and porsche just advertise theyre products perfect. the downforce stat for example is nearly irrelevant on street and even on a lot of tracks, tires not. then the weight. the cars are the same. its just a fact of personal taste. for me the 718 wins for the backside. but the pots, for me, has to be in the middle.. bcs tradition. the 981 wins in terms of rawness. its just a little bit more uncompromised. and the sound, well... exhaust mods cost the factory warranty. so this fact is also said, and removing the OPF is also ruining the warranty. for clearness. i own a 981 from 2016. 718 better infoainement and some looks (rearlights). 981 more emotional for me bcs im and audiphile. ;) will keep ours. i just dont like the factbanging.. i like the idea of emotional value. its important how the car makes you feel.. and this is the reason why you should buy a car. like f. porsche said "wir bauen autos die niemand braucht aber jeder will." in in this case all the facts doenst matter... we need to enjoy more and think less.

Great video and comparison! Cant beat the 981 GT4 growl but im biased. Would love to see a drive by video to see if the 718 sounds any better over 4k revs. Subscribing for more content 👍
You're welcome, looking back at this video I do think I was a bit harsh on the 718 GT4. It's a great car, better than the 981 GT4 in most areas. The GPF is legally unavoidable... inside the 718 GT4 the car does sound great. I've spent 2020 getting used to it... so if I could have either car, it would now be the 718 GT4. The driver isn't outside when the car is on the move!
No doubt about it the 981 is louder, the 718 has a different tone due to the particulate filter. The more important test is which one is the better driver & not just on the road but on the track. The chassis and tech in the 718 is according to Porsche more refined. Both are incredible cars and need someone like Chris Harris to do a real time test. I wouldn’t say no to either one of these two beauties.

No Name Not sure if your comment was in reply to mine but I get where you are coming from. I should have edited my comment & added that like you, I too own a 2016 Cayman 981 & wouldn’t change to the 718 for the reasons you have stated. I think it’s going to appeal to those who haven’t experienced the previous model & are keen to own a Porsche and at the money they’re charging for it, I can understand that.
Hi Max.....this was expected and makes it harder to sell my 981 GT4...but I'm sure aftermarket options will be available for the 718 GT4 to give it a bit more character....uncorked I'm sure that new 4.0L will sound really nice at 8,000 rpms!
Jmartpr jmartpr Hi there, keep your 981 GT4 forever!! I was expecting a difference in exhaust, but to be honest it was worse than even I was expecting. I wanted the 718 GT4 to sound at least 50-60% of the 981 GT4. As it’s supplied from the factory the 718 GT4 sounds pretty bad. Waiting for aftermarket mods and then will compare again.
If you have a current 981 GT4 I just don't see a reason to change, and the majority of the professional and established RUclips review channels agree. If you really want a significant power and performance upgrade over a 981 your best bet is buying a pristine 991.1 GT3. The prices on those have dropped to the point where it's about a wash with a new 718 GT4, and then you get the real-deal 475hp motorsport engine and pdk.
For what it's worth, here is my humble opinion. I owned a 981 GTS for four years. Lovely sounding car and in my opinion better sounding than a 981 GT4. Back in 2015 or so, the pops and crackles were quite new and "cool". The car world has changed since then and now every AMG, M, RS, Mini, VW R etc. does it. And it annoys the hell out of me. So much so, that I'm glad I don't have a car anymore that does it! I don't want to be associated with those guys running with their open exhaust through a village in 1st or 2nd gear. But not only there, also on mountain roads I got waved at (not a good wave) even though I drove normally and just down shifted. I'm not 12. I don't need a loud exhaust. What I care about is the sound on the inside. After all it's my car, it's there for my pleasure and not to annoy others. And there I think the 718 GT4 sound great. The quieter exhaust makes the engine sound come out much more. I only drove mine for 140km so far (Winter in Switzerland) but first impressions are great. It sounds much rawer and more mechanical inside than my GTS did. More grown up maybe. Obviously still at low revs as I'm running in the car. As for exhaust mods. If you want to keep it road legal with the OPF, there is very little room for change.
slaWterCH Thanks for sharing your ownership experience. All too often people have the car a day or two and pass judgement. I’ve always maintained you need to live with a car day in, day out, doing all sorts of driving to know if the car is right for you. Hence why getting feedback from real owners is great👍🏼
for me this answer is perfect :) and the dismission of the 981soud is also a way to verfiy your decision ;) just enjoy the car.. even its in Switzerland ;)
@@NoName-qp1op If you're someone that wants to be loud and obnoxious, any car with an OPF isn't for you. That is quite obvious. Black Badge Automobiles Personally I agree with you. Sound is important to me. The future is electric under the guise of environmentally friendliness. Let’s just forget about the nuclear power stations and plutonium waste product...
My 718 Spyder is about to come in but...in in a perpetual debate whether I should trade in my 981 GTS for the Spyder. On one hand I prefer the 718 looks and especially the spyders over any car Porsche makes. On the other hand that exhaust note is pitiful compared to the 981.....I haven't heard aftermarket mods making the 718 sound good yet which sucks
Both great cars and special in their own ways. Depends where you live… the Spyder should be driven without the roof imho, which means in the UK half the year you can’t drive it. You will never get modern cars sounding like the 981 GTS. This is why I went all in on my 981 GT4 purchase.
Stock there is no doubt that 981 sounds better but the 718 is intentionally heavily restricted to meet emissions standards. I'm curious to hear a sound comparison from two straight piped cars because I feel like the 718 4L engine has the potential to sound better than the 3.8L in the 981
alecman95 I’m sorry to say this, but even with the exhaust button pressed, the sound doesn’t change that much on the 718 GT4. I was hoping the difference between the two cars wouldn’t be that much...
If I ever get my shit together enough to be able to drive a current era sports/super car, the first thing I'm doing is adding an after market exhaust. Yes, the emissions regulations have destroyed the exhaust note of almost all current model sports cars. That being said, a proper aftermarket exhaust will let any engine sing in the way it was intended to. Note: Buy Akrapovic stock. Lol.

Which only goes to show that the "hey, this is still a great sounding car" mantra that's come out of practically everyone's who's RUclipsd the 718 GT4 (that includes you Messrs Catchpole, Prosser, Sutcliffe et al) is...in fact.... comparative drivel. That GPF is the devil's work, I'm afraid ...and they're going to be everywhere. We all thought that 'going biturbo' with the 9A2 engine in the 991.2 was 'the end'...but believe me, it's these preposterously useless GPFs that are the true killers of engine sound....and it's this new 4.0 litre in the 718 that proves the case. Plus, that engine has surely got to go into the new 992 GT3.... and if it does...well, all predecessor GT3s will simply move up in price. A sad day...and I just can't see how Porsche can fix it in a mid- or rear-mount configuration.
BertoniBertone This is a hobby channel. I can speak my opinions. I’m sure any mainstream big channel to highlight this issue wouldn’t be invited to the next Porsche launch event. There is a close link between the manufacturers and the big name YT car channels. I was disappointed how bad the 718 GT4 sounded... I wanted it to be better. We need to see what the USA cars sound like as they won’t have PPF fitted.
The 718 sounds like my 987.2 with Carnewal exhaust but quieter.. I like the tone better than the 981 so mine wins!! :-) I agree they have really had to strangle that 6 pot
I had a GT4 for a day back in 2017 and the sheer loudness of it was very tiresome after an hour, let alone 24 hours (and 1000 km). Hence I welcome the fact that my new Spyder will be less loud. Will it bee too silent? That remains to be heard... By the way, you cannot even assess it properly while standing idle because the valves stay partly shut anyway
Interesting. Didn’t know that about the valves. But it was a like-for-like comparison. Are you saying the 718 GT4 has a different valve setup to the 981 GT4 when both stationary?
den so I agree with you, however I also respect the opinions of others, so understand some people may not like it. Me personally? Can’t get enough of that soundtrack!!
@@MAXREVS It's my understanding that while standing idle, the revs are limited but I don't know the exact number. I also read that the sport exhaust keeps the valves shut between 2-4000 rpm under any circumstances on the new 718 GT4/Spyders. I will report back in a week or two ;-)
I pull a Fabspeed exhaust on my 718 2.0L and it sounds better than the 981GT4, i. e., deeper growl and burbling on the over run. The Euro exhaust rules are making good cars sound like crap. The Porsche factory does not know how to tune an exhaust to save their collective butt.
The 718 GT4 is also slower than the 981 GT4. Both in straight line and on track. Not by much, but still. Source: German Sport Auto’s tests. And yes, the German sport car media still takes pride in really measuring all the different thing. Whereas the British just take nice pictures and reaches the verdict on butt-feeling. 🙃
Virago International Yeah, I was really hoping it would sound better. However we need to see what a) the 718 GT4 sounds like in the USA as it won’t have the PPF, b) what can exhaust modifications do for the cars based in Europe with the PPF fitted.
Hello there, if you truly are a genuine owner of a 718 GT4, I thank you for your candid opinion. It's hard for me to know if you're just bating the argument, or whether actually own one, so apologies in advance. I know several other 718 GT4 owners who change cars often, and they say the same as you. Those people that tend to buy a car and hold it for a long time, think the exhaust sounds fine. Each to their own, we're all entitled to our opinions. It's of course not the fault of Porsche... we have to remember this is the new legal framework all cars have to abide by. Only certain brands like Ferrari and Lambo have dispensation from this regulation.
After driving it for a month and beating the shit out of it on the track, the exhaust somehow sounds better. Even on startup it burble/backfires. Maybe the car has to be break in to get the normal working sound. LOL. Feel free to checkout my page on Instagram @BostonAsianCarClub we host track days and car shows around New England area.
Great you have come back to add to your initial thoughts. We did a livestream a while ago with Boris, who races professionally for Porsche. He recently purchase a 718 GT4 also. You need carbon deposits to build up in the exhaust, which improves the sound. I’ve been told it keeps changing up to 10k miles. However that could be subjective. Happy to hear that you’re now getting familiar with the car. The exhaust noise issue is the first thing people talk about. Now you have tracked your GT4, you know it’s all about the handling and driver communication.
@@MAXREVS The car has one problem I don't like. The car tends to understeer in mid corners. Porsche should of went with square set up instead of staggered since the mid engine. I think it should feel way more balance especially high speed turns
I’d rather have the 718 sound over the 981. The 981 would wake the neighbours, and after a while it would frankly be a bit embarrassing to live with. 981 hasn’t aged well, such a dated interior.
Mike Darlow I am yes, but of course each to their own. I admit it sounds more raucous, but I would find that embarrassing. I rather have the torque performance of the 718 and the nicer interior than the 981, but I am warping the debate as this is just on sonics only. 718 for me. 981 for you. All groovy.
@Julian - I make a special shout out to you in the longer edit of this video I’m making... you always seem to focus on the steering wheel column and whether it’s leather or not... well this time I checked!
MAX REVS Seasons Greetings Max. Thanks for the shout out in advance. The steering wheel column option, when omitted, is a sure sign of a buyer not understanding every spec option. Any Porsche without that option frankly is a ruined spec. I am from the Nick Murray school on Porsche spec. The next fail is the cigarette lighter cover...most pay to have the lid, looks rubbish with the faux silver lip. And anyone who options the foot well nets really have lost the plot. There is a reason they are a free option: they look cheap, they are cheap.
981 without a shadow of doubt
And they said particulate filters won't have that big of an impact on sound...no wonder every manufacturer is enhancing the sound inside the interior.
It really depends on how they are designed. Also, the 718 sound different because the 718 not only has GPF, but also because of additional noise restrictions. I heard a Ferrari 812SF without GPF next to an 812 GTS last week, and they are virtually the same.

Initially I focused on subscriber count as having only 200 felt like, “why am I putting all this time and effort into videos no one is watching”. Especially because no one was commenting. RUclips videos without the comments is like pizza without the tomato sauce. For me the interaction is what I love. Can’t fight progress, just wait the next Cayman will be electric. Can you imagine the ‘engine sound’ on that?? I can’t afford a GT4 but heck I do love them! MERRY XMAS!!
@@MAXREVS GT4!!!!, now there's a car :) not had that pleasure.
For me the sound is a key part of the experience, can't imagine a car without it really. But yer, electric is the future I guess. Merry Christmas to you too dude.
p.s the pizza analogy made me smile :)
Fun day filming today Max - Can safely say sports button pressed or not, the 981 wins hands down!
Waris26 Thanks for sharing your GT4 with the community here👍🏼
@Sideways G the engine note and feel in the 718 cabin is really nice. All new cars are going to lack noise sadly 😭😭
Giant price rise in Australia and sounds terrible compared to the previous car. 981 all day, every day.
JBOsurf totally agree
It would be a blessing to have anyone of theses cars! (Smile)
Nothing via the speakers. Just allowing more real noise from the engine bay into the cabin
Any manufacturer which makes engine noise come out the loudspeakers goes onto my ‘never buy from them’ list!

they`re both same, and the fact with the downforce is at top speed, and even on the NS this is semi-relevant. more relevant is the fact that the 718 has done the lap with new spec N tires. and there are guys that drive the same times with their 981s. the cars are even. and porsche just advertise theyre products perfect. the downforce stat for example is nearly irrelevant on street and even on a lot of tracks, tires not. then the weight. the cars are the same. its just a fact of personal taste. for me the 718 wins for the backside. but the pots, for me, has to be in the middle.. bcs tradition. the 981 wins in terms of rawness. its just a little bit more uncompromised. and the sound, well... exhaust mods cost the factory warranty. so this fact is also said, and removing the OPF is also ruining the warranty. for clearness. i own a 981 from 2016. 718 better infoainement and some looks (rearlights).

@@MAXREVS well said , sir :) an in all hoesty. they will do more NA cars in the future, ... with all the taycans sold, the will build high emission cars in the future and sell them to us for e heck or two.
yeah, i bought the new gt4 but not doubt i have to buy an exhaust. However the new gt4 have a good sound from 4000 rpm
Francesco Zappalà good luck getting beyond second gear. You’ll rarely hit 4000 revs unless on a track
@@julian987r4 I was worried about that but it's just not true in normal every day driving. Yep, without hitting a track I'll never see 6000+ on a regular basis. Never getting out of second isn't an issue.
@@phillipmcmahon5949 This is great to hear as someone looking at 981 GT4's. I imagine it actually makes city driving a bit better as you don't have to constantly shift, no?

Waris26 fair enough, at that rate you’ll be hitting an expensive maintenance bill, but hey horses for courses.
Sticking with my 981.
Yes, even I’ve got one now! 981 a keeper for life in my opinion. The newer models offer me nothing extra, and takeaway some of the Cayman character
Great video and comparison! Cant beat the 981 GT4 growl but im biased. Would love to see a drive by video to see if the 718 sounds any better over 4k revs. Subscribing for more content 👍
Great Video, Sir
You're welcome, looking back at this video I do think I was a bit harsh on the 718 GT4. It's a great car, better than the 981 GT4 in most areas. The GPF is legally unavoidable... inside the 718 GT4 the car does sound great. I've spent 2020 getting used to it... so if I could have either car, it would now be the 718 GT4. The driver isn't outside when the car is on the move!
Thanks for this ,little bit surprised how much difference there is.
Yeah, I was disappointed with the audio difference...

Not sure if your comment was in reply to mine but I get where you are coming from.
981 is the car to have
If you have a current 981 GT4 I just don't see a reason to change, and the majority of the professional and established RUclips review channels agree. If you really want a significant power and performance upgrade over a 981 your best bet is buying a pristine 991.1 GT3. The prices on those have dropped to the point where it's about a wash with a new 718 GT4, and then you get the real-deal 475hp motorsport engine and pdk.
981 visceral sound
I currently own 2 981 GT4 examples, I will of course buy a 718 GT4 and see the difference myself, but I am sure that the 718 is a worthy successor!!
Green Porsche May I please ask why you have two of the same?
MAX REVS I couldn’t resist the Porsche green and the Voodoo blue colours!!!
Green Porsche 🤣👍🏼
Hence why getting feedback from real owners is great👍🏼
so you do own a 718 gt4? where do you live?
for me this answer is perfect :) and the dismission of the 981soud is also a way to verfiy your decision ;) just enjoy the car.. even its in Switzerland ;)
@@NoName-qp1op If you're someone that wants to be loud and obnoxious, any car with an OPF isn't for you. That is quite obvious.
I'm just glad that I'm no longer associated with that group I mentioned while I still can enjoy great and non-fake cabin sound.
I will, thanks. Driving here is enjoyable. Even though the internet doesn't think so. Goes a bit in the same direction as the loud exhaust topic.

R8andGT3Fan Are you psychic ;-) It’s coming to this channel next year...
Sad that even the not so great sounds will fade away in the future.
For comedy effect you should have had a regular 4 cylinder 718 in the mix too.
If only this was my full-time job and I got paid for this stuff ;-) Then I’d go to town on the planning and shoots. As it was, this video was uploaded the same day I did the filming. Not quite the same (as I only did the cold starts) but... ruclips.net/video/E8dvYqxy4Is/видео.html
Real shame about the sound the exhaust sound is such a big part of a sports car, we will see what the future holds.
I like my center exit exhausts
Stock there is no doubt that 981 sounds better but the 718 is intentionally heavily restricted to meet emissions standards. I'm curious to hear a sound comparison from two straight piped cars because I feel like the 718 4L engine has the potential to sound better than the 3.8L in the 981
Time will tell
Lmao I'm still waiting for the 718 to press the button
alecman95 I’m sorry to say this, but even with the exhaust button pressed, the sound doesn’t change that much on the 718 GT4.
Lol.

Not only the 718 sounds quite bad compared to the 981, but it also seems like that the new engine has much higher inertia. Very sad.
That isnt the stock exhaust on the 981, isnt it?
It’s stock
its because of the OPF like every other sports car produced in 2019
718 gt4 is so quiet, my 718 GTS is twice as loud as that so what gives ....
First world problems... hahahaha! 981 for me (not biased in the slightest, nope, not one bit)!
Andy Eder Haha, you sound just like Eddie!!
@@MAXREVS - what can I say? Great minds think alike, sir! Hahahahaha!
The 718 definitely need to have aftermarket exhaust installed
The new 718 GT4 just sounds like a four-cylinder boxer engine...
Its the Particulate filters in the new car. With it removed, apples to apples, it should be more comparable.
I have done 6000 miles in my 981 GT4 cant say that the noise is anything other than intoxicatingly awesome 👏
den so I agree with you, however I also respect the opinions of others, so understand some people may not like it.
I will report back in a week or two ;-)
@@denso6708 You only have your GT4 since two or three weeks then ;-)

Slow, but sounds nice! :D
If you squint you can read the number plates.
I'm sure it sounds good but I think the flat 6 in the 981 sounds more exotic than the turbo 4 in the 718s
OMG, what the hell happened to the sound? :( so, the new car is faster but the old one sounds so much better :( kind of a dilemma
@@tvonfelsen what? why? the 718 has 40 more horses ... this is weird

Sadly the new noise regulations has done to the sound of 718. Nothing you can do.
Noise regulations issue... Not manufacturer's issue....
718 actually has a code name, it’s called 982, so in the beginning when you should say 982 GT4 instead
981 rear diffuser is so much nicer. Can't stand how ugly the 718 rear diffuser is, looks cheap!
Horrible 718 sound. Great car still
I would expect 718 sounds better unfortunately not. Very disappointing
Virago International Yeah, I was really hoping it would sound better. However we need to see what a) the 718 GT4 sounds like in the USA as it won’t have the PPF, b) what can exhaust modifications do for the cars based in Europe with the PPF fitted.
Sell both, buy a Mezger engine...
I just bought the 718GT4 and I have to say, it sounds worst then my miata.
981 is sooooo much better
The 718 GT4 is far superior in every way. Just change the exhaust, simple
Little gt3
718 might as well get a Tesla sounds 💩
Sad...
I’d rather have the 718 sound over the 981. The 981 would wake the neighbours, and after a while it would frankly be a bit embarrassing to live with. 981 hasn’t aged well, such a dated interior.
Julian Poole Are you serious?
981 all day
Mike Darlow I am yes, but of course each to their own.
