I remember the day after Dwayne passed. It was my second day using the "internet", actually America Online, and the first thing I did after signing up was look for a Skinny Puppy group. The day before, everyone was talking about The Process and what was going on with Ogre and cEvin & Dwayne, the next day, Dwayne was gone. I'd seen SP maybe 6 or 7 times by that point and Dwayne was the musical soul of their live show. cEvin made everything so powerful playing drums. Dwayne is sorely missed. R.I.P.
Thank you! The most fascinating part of skinny puppy, for me, always were the strings and how they blend with the complex rhythmic soundscapes creating vacuous pit of contrasting emotions. It's almost like being torn in-between the anger and grief. An undescribable feeling of loss, a frustrating helplessness which has no resolution and an anger which you can't direct towards anything.
I once saw two industrial DJs get in a fight over this at a goth club. One guy was mad he was just letting it play out and tried to come in with another song. Dude just reached over and smacked down the fader for that CDJ. Then the black lace and foundation started to fly. Lesson, don't get too geeked up at the club.
Thanks for making this. I remember listening to Worlock in a car for the first time, and at first, it was just like OK, we're listening to some industrial stuff. Then the chorus (or whatever it is) comes in, and it's actually one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, what with the synth stuff and then the vocoder line on top. Very brilliant stuff.
Since learning some music theory I've been able to describe some bits in music that I like. It's no surprise to see them come up again in an old favorite like this.
My first favourite song by SP, I got my first tattoo in 92 with their logo being held by the Social Distortion Skele..haunting to hear your analysis, and love that people still love this song!
Without the percussion, Ogre's voice and the gadgetry over, this song sounds very very sad, almost funereal. It's really very beautiful in all of its sadness.
Wow, thankyou for breaking this down for us, I have loved this song for years and always wondered how the string part was arranged. Its such an emotional moment in the song, really gets me straight in the heart.
Thank you. I danced all 7 of my babes to this song. "Wasted views That's all they see blue Hot blood guilt optic nerve With the right attitude You will succeed blue Self-abusive Recluse Too late for me Make Shifting peace Unsettling Crazy Doing crazy things Keep your eyes open Soft-spoken changes nothing A view so cruel A view"
It's so haunting and mesmerizing. He used his melodies as a hook and made you feel it! Was incredible composer and bet he would of been doing soundtrack work if he could have stayed! 😢
Seen them first time in 1988 during the European leg of Ain't it Dead? With Dwayne the music developed, in particular CF&M (probably my fav album) his contribution is noticealbe compared to previous albums, though he already worked on MIND:TPI.
This is really cool to watch. The synth sound that you chose is perfect. Its got that deep powerful Skinny Puppy feel to it. You got the notes/chords just right too. Thank you for making and posting this. Subscribed :)
Really fascinating look at the chords, with the tension and release between notes, i never consciously realized it but it explains why it's so sad. Was overjoyed when they played it live during the last tour. Here in Edmonton they also mentioned that Candle (their last song of the evening) was on the last album they made with Dwayne, and that they all missed him very much. 😭 Also, just beautiful string tones on your mini-keyboard. I wonder if there's any other stripped down synth lines or melodies from their songs you could isolate and/or look at? (Thinking tracks like Amnesia, Killing Game, Nature's Revenge, Harsh Stone White, Rivers, Cult; all the sad classics). 😢
Yup, this analysis fits right in with what I was messing with on guitar to this song... I also heard/played some of the old flat fifth that seems to come and go during the verse!
Such an awesome breakdown of this! Both rats of LRW are huge SP fans, they are certainly our biggest musical influence and this may be my favorite song by them as well. I had "Rabies" on cassette as a little kid!! Do you know what is going on with the basslines in songs like Addiction and Inquisition?? Pro-1 and Delay pedal I am assuming? I would love to put together some sort of cover/homage for my channel, but it's definitely not easy an easy task. lol If you know anything about how they made those basslines (notes used in the seq/arp/any MIDI info) or if you could point me in the right direction it would be very much appreciated! 😳 🐀
I’d HIGHLY recommend following cEv on Patreon - he’s been going track by track through the records and talking about gear and the production. It’s amazing and you are helping out someone that means a lot to all of us.
Cool that you figured out the progression. Did you manage to find out which orchestral piece they used? They said the strings were from a cassette they found.
I was pretty lazy and just pulled up some string preset in Logic - it wasn’t anything unique. I added a small bit of reverb so it would have a bit more sustain…
@@deadscenerecordsI took a look and I’m sure it’s one of the 14 or so presets that you’ll find under Orchestral -> Strings. (It’s likely “studio strings, Smart Strings, pop strings, etc) Good luck!
They are just one of the first preset string sounds I pulled up in Logic Pro.. it's no special sample library or anything - just a default preset w/a touch a reverb added. Hope that helps!
Nice video. It makes me still sad, after all those years, that Dwayne wasted his life so uncarefully. Someone had to dig him out of the grave and slap him for that.

Personally I think the “Dwayne era” of Skinny Puppy was hands down the best. Rabies, Vivisect, Too Dark Park. Dwayne was the sample master!
indeed. RIP Dwayne, so much missed.

Thank you. Dwayne kept it simple in some ways, deep and clear in others. RIP DRG.
God Bless Dwayne. What a wonderful gift he gave us.

beautiful way of putting it. it almost feels like yearning for something just out of reach.
Totally. It hasn't been the same without Dwayne. Like some beautiful and mournful magic.
This, for me, has always been the most sad Skinny Puppy song....Easily one of their greatest
This is why I prefer the long edit of the song. This beautiful part gets its moment in the sun.

Really cool video. I consider Worlock to be the top anthem of industrial music. It's not even close.
Al Jourgensen and Skinny Puppy Together during their zenith…i would give my life to be a fly on that studios wall
Bravo mate. This is so hauntingly beautiful. I've never teared up at a Skinny Puppy song before. Damn it.
RIP DG. Gorgeous synth parts
This song has always meant so much to me, very special memories tied to it. Thank you for posting this.
I think the vocoder not only had the vocals but strings slightly processed through too which added neat character & layering to the chorus.
Wow mesmerizing. Makes we want to hear a symphony play a version. Loved hearing it live on the Final Tour. Thanks for the analysis

Heartbreakingly beautiful.
I'm reminded of dead can dance!
Agreed, on that one.
In 2003, I was 18 and heard this song playing at the record store. Bought the CD and fell in love with SP.

Thank You For the Music

This is great! Thank you so much for making this. Easily in my top 5 Skinny Puppy tracks, mostly because of that whole synth line.
Nice breakdown of an amazing piece of music

That's amazing. I've heard the song hundreds of times, this bit by itself sounds familiar yet strange, like the somber end credits to my life...
haha - hang in there!
Appreciate the breakdown, really helped me grok a bit of what's going on.
Have no words ❤ Can you release a video with just the strings and no talk. Thank you very much
Amazing video and song. Thank you!
this is awesome. I'll have to revisit this later so I can memorize it.
nice, you´re a good teacher!
✨LOVE IT!!!!!✨
Oh this is double cool! I both love this track... ANd have the exact same mini-Lab!
I always wanted to see a chours Analysis on front 242 gripped by fear but skinny puppy works
Give me all the puppy riffs you got.
Much appreciated.
Some trivia: "With the right attitude you will succeed Blue. Self abusive recluse too late for me." Blue is an ex-girlfriend of Ogre.
This is practically making me cry. How incredibly beautiful.
Is there any way I could get a video or audio of you playing this?

Awesome video! Any chance to go into some more detail on how you made the patch you used in this video? Such a beautiful sound
I believe it’s just a basic preset string sound in Logic. I might have added a bit of reverb but it’s probably just a default string sound.
❤👍🏾
smothered hope ?? pls!
A Skinny Puppy song with a chorus?
..that can't be right :)
I know the song, btw, that was just a silly joke
Great song. DRG.
Cool that you figured out the progression. Did you manage to find out which orchestral piece they used? They said the strings were from a cassette they found.
I don’t think any of it is a sample at all - it’s all hand played by Dwayne. Choralone does use some samples though.
@@lexaunculpt The band said in interviews that in the studio version the string is an orchestral recording thy found on cassette in the attic
@eightcoins4401 99% chance that means they just didn't want to share their techniques.
What string library are YOU using here? Superb texture!

The original sound was a modified version of Full Arco String on the EMAX from the Emulator Standards Sound Banks.
Huh... that opening reminds me of a 'John Carpenter' type tune from his early 80s films.
Prolly
I think so
WowCool

What is the VST/Samples you are using here?
It’s just a logic string preset with a bit of reverb added I believe. Nothing fancy
God's work
Neat.
