My headcanon is that Sponge is a Mario Brother, though an illegitimate bastard child fathered by Mario and Luigi's father, Anthony Jumpman, during a period spent in Kraskatalia during the war. Perhaps he could instead be a failed(?) clone of Jumpman, if the factory/lab stage is anything to go by... And Pretzel is an even more botched clone.

This adds to his pile of self hatred.

That's why when you play the NES Super sponge bros everything is dark and depressing. But in doing so he trapped himself in the alternative reality being sponge, because he soaked it all up and lives in the negative version of Mushroom kingdom. Forever having to relive his failure to save his princess while Mario the positive version gets to live on blissfully.... But how long can he keep it up? How long can he keep up the charade that he is okay and contempt being tormented to relive his past. Over and over. How much can this sponge really take? Before he's no longer soaking it up and instead smearing it. Will he forever be the hero. Or will he live long enough without being ringed out... to be the next villain.
