You know...I am Bengali. Thai is also originated partially from Sanskrit. Sanskrit is also at the base of Bengali. So the sounds are kinda similar to Bengali alphabets.

Sawaddee krub, Teacher. 🙏🏻 🙋🏻‍♂️ I have a question. Are the letters of the Thai 🇹🇭 alphabet being pronounced by name with just 1 syllable or 2 syllables? My American ears 👂🏻 👂🏻are hearing 2 ✌🏻syllables per letter pronounced. Also, is there just 1 sound per letter or does each letter have 1 long sound and 1 short sound? (I don’t know if you understand the long and short sounds of 1 letter in English. I can further explain. I’m a French teacher.) Khob khun krub, Teacher. 🙏🏻

Hi, in Thai language, there could be 2 sounds for 1 letter. For example, ค sounds like 'k' / 'c' (like king, cat, etc.) when it's the beginning consonant, but when ค is the ending consonant, it sounds 'g' / 'k' (like bug, luck, etc.). However, there's no short and long sounds for the letters. Sounding short or long would depend on the vowels that used.

When I first listen to thai alphabet I was also confused and thought why it is so complicated and long. But later I found out that actually the alphabet is the one that is pronounce first and the later is the word which contain the alphabet. Eg: ก ko kai. Kai = chicken. It is like a for apple in english. I think this is what you mean by 2 syllables. 😅
I think the reason is there are so many homophone in thai alphabet so when we mention kho for example people wont know which kho we are talking about.

Darian Protho Sawaddee krub 🙏🏻. Darian, the “‘a’ for ‘apple’” analogy is very helpful. Khob khun krub.

This is really complicated for an English speaker. The alphabet seems to assume a language fluency. The letters are related to nouns.
