Thank you so much. I have a quiz this Saturday, and I couldn't quite understand how to interpret the result if a person has better than 20/20 vision like 20/10. You rock
Thank you, that taught me what 20/20 means. What purpose do the green and red horizontal lines serve? Is it anything to do with testing for colour-blindness?
"what others can see" that is totally ambiguous and incorrect, 20/20 means to see letters of 20 points high from 20 feet away = 20 feet / 20 point size letters. >> 20 feet / 7.05 millimeters >>>> 20 feet / 0.277 inches. the 20 points were later changed to a subtended 5 minute of arch ratio. Which is no longer a real 20/20 but >> 20 feet / 0.349 inches or 20 feet / 8.85 millimeters.

That distance is what a person with a normal visual acuity could see those corresponding letters from. For example a person with normal acuity could see the letters well on the 5th row from 20ft(6m).
20/20 is normal and not in need of eyewear, anything else signifies a change in vision that may need investigating (depending on patient presenting issues and history of natural visual changes)
My chart has notations on the right side for different distances for each line ( 30 feet ,40 feet ect. ) should i ignore that and set it up at 20 feet as you did ?
20 feet is the focal point for distance if the test is done closer the distance results will be incorrect if the test room is not large enough a reversed Snellen chart should be used viewed through a Ophthalmic Viewing Mirror with the distance from the patients eyes to the mirror added to the reflected distance to the chart both distances added together should equal 20 foot
I can't see the letter E from 20 or 10 feet away with or without prescription eye glasses. I can see the letter E from 5 feet away with or without prescription eye glasses. My left eye is 100% blind, from a gun shot wound. My right eye can see the letters on the Snellen chart from 5 feet away with or without prescription eye glasses. Am I legally blind, if I can't see or read the letter E on the Snellen chart from 20 or 10 feet away, with or without prescription eye glasses?
Visual acuity less than 20/200 is considered legally blind, but to actually fit the definition, the person must not be able to attain 20/200 vision even with prescription eyewear. Many people who would be legally blind without eyewear can function well in everyday life with appropriate glasses or contact lenses. Just a nice pair, and I would prefer them in artistic relief, like sticking out from the wall, not just a picture. And, they would have to be pert, not like, "National Geographic", biggies, as they would hang down so low, that they would block any reading of the lines of letters below them. IMHO, any optometrist who would use such a chart must be declared to be incompetent because it would be likely, eventually, that they would misdiagnose a Chinese lady as having a cataract, when she really owns a Rinkon Contenento.

Should the measurement be based on what the patient can see relatively clearly or up to what they can just make out even if well out of focus?
Based on what they can read out, once they make 2 or more errors on a line - you give them the reading of the line before

Hi. What will happen if i have lazy eye problem on left eye ?
Great question. I don’t know it will affect it
What if a person makes 3 mistakes on line 5? Is that 20/40 -3 or you just write 20/30 for line 6?
If they make 3 mistakes, you go back up to the line before it where they made 2 or less mistakes and use that as the vision
Are all Snellen chart letters the same including at a DOT exam? Or are some charts letters arraigned differently?
There are a few varieties (pictures v letters) but I have only seen this one in practice in the places I work
