I would venture to say EVERY OLD SCHOOL DRAG RACE FAN LOVES THESE F/A CARS and we LOVE those men and women who have kept them and that class alive. Thank You!!
Watching these awesome AA/FA hotrods make their pass's I and likely most of you can't help but remember watching "Wild Willie" Borsch and his incredibly popular Winged Express give us heart stopping moments as he piloted that machine thru the quarter mile.
Worked on AA/FA’s for a long time My favorite class since I was a kid watching them at OCIR and LACR Became friends with all my idols racing in that class
@davidjones8999 i own 2 original fuel altereds and I get this comment alot, ones 100 inch wheel base with a buggy spring front end and a hemu the other is 92 inch with a torsion and a chevy. The way I see it all us fuel altered guys are in the same boat. The nhra wants us to not run. If we start fighting each other on technicalities we'll just be helping the nhra
Watching the slow mo on the 304mph run. That left front wheel really didnt want to be on the ground did it. Back in the day Richard was an underdog, but given the equipment (such as bruce liden, ) he could hang with anybody.
And may I add.. it's amazing around '69-'70 how the fuel altereds turned into funny cars- imagine a late sixties AA/FA with the engine now lower, longer wheelbase, extra hoop on the roll cage, and voila! You have the current funny car chassis. Perhaps no front suspension any more, but something that has remained unchanged for over half a century.
I remember well, the Original AA/FA's... with 80" - 100" wb's. I don't remember ANY of them, with more than ONE wheel ever touching ground during a run!! Ahhh.... Those "Were" the Days.... and when you'd see upwards of 60(!!) AA/FD's (todays T/F's) show up to qualify for as much as a 32 car field!! Yup... Back when Drag Racing was actually FUN!!..... before Corporate Money showed up and Wally Parks and friends saw Big Dollar signs dancing before their eyes and everything went to sh*t.!!! Willie qualified for the 1968 NHRA Winternationals, a 32-car field in Top Fuel, setting an AA/FA record elapsed time of 7.29 seconds. The rest of the field refused to race him, fearing "Mousie's" ill-handling Altered, the "Winged Express" (80" WB!!) It turned out they were right, because in round one of Super Eliminator, Willie went from guardrail to centerline in a wild ride, that was actually photographed by Bob McClurg (?), and it became one of the most famous drag racing photos of all time. Willie shoe'd that ill-handling Altered for a solid Ten Years..... I don't know how he survived that thing!! He was the very first to break the 200 mph mark, at Irwindale, in late (I forget the actual date) Sept. of 1967..... if I remember right, he ran 200.44 mph in 7.91(?) seconds. I will Never forget another one of the most incredible AA/FA pictures ever taken.... of "Wild" Willie's famous SIDEWAY's burnout in the Winged Express.... with One hand on the steering wheel and his left hand resting on the body.. like he's just out for a "Sunday drive"!!!..... or, in another photo - he was waving at the fans - During a run!! Unbelievable!! RIP, Willie.... YOU, will NEVER be forgotten, among the Original AA/FA class drivers, by the fans!! He passed away at only 61years old.... Not from drag racing, but from Throat Cancer. IMHO... Willie, was Thee Greatest & most "badass" AA/FA driver to ever shoe those unforgiving "beasts" down the quarter mile, Ever, in the entire history of the class!! There were Many Great AA/FA "shoe's" in the class back then.... but "Wild" Willie, was in a separate class, all by himself. You had to be 90% Certified Crazy, and 10% Certified Suicidal, to drive those short wb beasts..... but, WHAT A SHOW!!!
I watched the Alaskan grizzly run against Ron Fassel here in Alaska at AK raceway park, Alaskan ran 5.75 275! That was approx 2001! Also lucky to watch Ricky Ruiz in his Nevada rattler race Alaskan grizzly here in Alaska, priceless!
@FastIsLife Not impressed with your comment, obviously you have never heard the expression "horsepower is money, how fast do you want to go?" Getting the dollars is a humongous part of the competition, we are lucky to have xcellent sponsors like Summit for our sport
Wow , great accomplishment . Always one of my favourite brackets to watch . Thanks to all involved . What do we want ? MORE AA / FA !!!!!
I would venture to say EVERY OLD SCHOOL DRAG RACE FAN LOVES THESE F/A CARS and we LOVE those men and women who have kept them and that class alive. Thank You!!
A full quarter mile, count me in!
Absolutely fantastic, Wish they still raced in class.

Really hiking the front on both cars, hats off to the drivers.
Wow !!! Outstanding !! Thanks so much for sharing. What a run.

Great video. Modern AA/FA ❤❤❤❤
Likely the wildest drag cars on the planet. I remember Hartman in Funny Car
Awesome ! Thunder fire fumes and raw power ! 👍🏻😉
Richard should have a ride in funnycar. Great driver.
Love the different classes it makes more interesting.
Basically a funnycar with a modified fuel Altered body on it ..... but still pretty cool 😎
The new AA/FA yes, but the original AA/FA NO!
@@davidjones8999 I agree

Back in the day the Altered's were THE SHOW ! followed by T/F ! History will show that basically the Funnycar's replaced the Altered's !
@@martinhiggs7027 as far as I'm concerned , they still are

That was great pass guys!!!
1/4 Mile @ 4.92 Sec
@ 296 MPH ! The slo-mo sounds like a Saturn 5 🪐 😮 🔥 🏁 And then... 304 MPH!!! 🎉
I knew Richard & his family worked for them in San Dimas briefly. RIP Virgil.
That slow me @9:30 just wow.!!
If the NHRA can bring back supercharged nitro bikes, they sure as hell can bring back AA/FA into the mix
Fuel Altereds '67- 68- '69, So.Cal., the penultimate years for the AA/FA. '66-'69? For the wonderful DOUBLE A FUEL DRAGSTERS!!!

He forgot Wild Willy Borsch The Winged Express He was the best.
My dad had one of these in the late 70s......always wondered if it is still around.
These altered have a little longer wheelbase than the vintage ones but I bet they’re still a handful to handle.
What's up with the front aero??? AA/FA has no front aero.....

Alterds have a shorter wheelbase than a funny car, right?
You have to be a certain kind of crazy to do dat.
I’ll stand on the gas😎
But is it the REAL QUARTER or are they choked up running the NHRA short Track??
These cars are already insane so why not let em run screw blowers. Haha
on 2 wheels
Nothing like what they actually were. Its not a "Fuel altered" its a funny car
Wha? Not impressed?
Dedicated blokes pushing the spirit.
Cool except this is old video.
It helps when someone is throwing money at you like Summit. Not impressed.
It's called sponsorship...
