I’ve been a pianist for more than 50 years. No one, absolutely no one has influenced and inspired my playing more than Joe. No one like him will we ever see again. The absolute musicians musician.
I had the pleasure of watching Joe play this, and the full album solo as the warm up on the Crusaders tour in Manchester UK @ the Apollo Theatre back in 1979 aged 19 loved it then still a major part of my life today! Thankyou Joe.
The master piano player of my generation. My love of jazz is owed to this man's incredible talent. RIP Joe. You brought much joy and peace to the hearts and minds of those of us who appreciate good jazz music.
The Carmel Album is my favorite work from Joe. It was my initial exposure to Joe and will always be The Original in my heart and collection. All other recordings from Joe are mere attempts at recapturing the sound of Carmel. I was deeply saddened to read of his passing. His passing makes me wish for the afterlife...Thank you Joe for the many, many nights spent with your music.
I wonder if Joe wrote this about the town Carmel...Sure seems possible. Beautiful cut that I remembered just by watching a spot n the news about the town that has houses with no addresses. uncanny!
I actually played his style tonight by ear...and I can see the musical genius he was and is...still. What a delightful workout it was...stealing is what musicians all do. And I've heard him in my head for decades. Great to be able to play it the way he does and integrate it into my personal style...Art Tatum is my next mountain to scale..."Tea for Two" the 1933 recording...I love hard stuff because it only make you better as a musician overall. Finally figured out Carmel and didn't need a transcription. Wow, what fun it is...Thanks Joseph..may you play with the Angels forever...
Listen to both songs in their entirety. You will discover that in this video, Cannery Row is played up to 2:27; from 2:28 till the end ... it is definitely Carmel!
He said in an interview once that he hoped that his music would live on 100 years after he was gone, and it will thanks to recordings as there is no one else that could play it other than Joe
R.I.P. .....Michael Franks said that Joes music contained gemstones of lyricism counterbalanced with the granite of funk...well chosen words ...but ...the music is and was more than that .Those of us in genuine mourning over the loss of Joe Sample will know what I mean...One day I,ll fly away and Street Life are just the the tip of a big ice berg. The man is gone but the music lives on .....
Joe Sample's style is so signature and distinctive. He can make you appreciate the fact that he's playing an obviously crappy instrument...yet he still sounds killer on it. Elton John would be throwing a tantrum over a POS piano like this one.
@D BExactly, it's what I don't know that's makes this peice so impressive to me.I wasn't even commenting on who's the best or what's the best. I was just giving credit where credit is due.The man(Joe Sample) tore this piece up. I'm getting the impression that there's something personal about dude that you don't like. Are you a pianist or just a critic!! I'm not a critic.I'm a musician to the core. From the window to the wall man!!!Dude was putting in work on this piece And I'm sure he got paid!! Sorry It took so long to respond but I would love to converse with you further on your philosophy of music, musicians or any other field of expertise.
@D B One more time,I wasn't rating musicians nor critiquing.Just commenting on someone's performance that I was impressed with The musicians that you mentioned were not on my radar when I was first introduced to jazz.At that time (1977) when I was more r&b and funk oriented,Contemporary jazz was a conduit to classic jazz for me.Joe Sample was instrumental to me connecting the two. Even during his Crusader days with Stix Hooper and Wilton Felder ,his performances impressed me. I just a fan dude and I try not to fanatical about anything!!!
Ladies and Gents, who can tell me what he's playing until 2:31? Carmel starts at after that. Although Joe is a genius I assume this is no spontaneous self invention?
i thought Chopin of old or Franz was amazing and Sergei Rachmaninov more recently but not one even comes close to Joe Sample... This performance is one of the best if not the best I have ever seen or heard a piano sound
Poor recording, but his skill is absolutely Extra Ordinary. Outrageous display of playing well outside anything consider safe sales, but he's that good he can not only do it... but ..... I was going to say make it look easy.. What he is doing is as far from easy as a human being can get! Incredible, that's what he can do.
Joe wax my first jazz musical inspiration.. Really miss him.. RIP Mr. Sample you’re remembered and still revered!
Love this cut. Joe Sample was a phenomenal musician . I never tire hearing him on the keys. Magical. He left us too soon.
I’ve been a pianist for more than 50 years. No one, absolutely no one has influenced and inspired my playing more than Joe. No one like him will we ever see again. The absolute musicians musician.
Michael! Shit, dude, you must be almost as old as I am! LOL.
I started playing at 4 1/2 years old. I’m 65 right now
Yup, old as dirt 🎹🎵

Ragtime Carmel. He was amazing.

The first song is Cannery Row followed by Carmel
For the record, the piece featured above is not "Carmel". It's "Cannery Row" from the Carmel album. Still a great piece.😊🎶🎹
Listen to both songs in their entirety. You will discover that in this video, Cannery Row is played up to 2:27; from 2:28 till the end ... it is definitely Carmel!
