Jean Luc Ponty - Live in Concert - São Paulo 1980

- Jean Luc Ponty recorded home from TV broadcast during live transmission of the concert.
This is the very first Jean Luc Ponty tour in Brazil, specifically the first time ever to play live in São Paulo in the classic Quintet formation.
I was lucky to watch him with different versions of the Quintet every time they played in São Paulo (missed only one or 2 tours in different formations).
This was a "life changing event" of my early teen years. I dare to say this is the prime of all Quintet formations, with a very young Rayford Griffin bringing down the house. I saw this genius live a couple of times with Ponty, and also with Stanley Clarke and others.
The concerts were broadcast live on FM radio on the 5th (the night I attended the concert), and on TV on the 6th. The word of mouth was so powerful they had to add extra concert on Sunday last minute, soon after the original concert ended.
The band is just perfect. Just perfect.

When I was 16 I saw these guys in November 1979. It changed my perspective forever.
Been a devoted fan since the latter 70's. Saw his amazing band live in Dallas one year. Turned on many people to his music once they heard jlp. What an impact jlp had on me and to this day I love to hear his works...
When I pass on, I wish to have "Forms Of Life " played at my service.
This music is spiritual to me. It reaches into my soul. Thanks to RUclips and Bluetooth. I'm proud to be in the company of those who have commented on this.
There's a timeless quality to this music. Thank you all for your beautiful music!
I completely agree about your "timeless music" comment! Perfectly stated!
Yes! Timeless is the word. Thanks!
Thanks for listening
Mind’s trip to heaven of music. JLP the best!
AMEN!
Ha, Z... called out a young Rayford at the time of this concert. Hell all of them were young, maybe he should have said, a younger Rayford, but no matter. I think that Ray always brings down the house when he played w JLP, that's what Jean do, he Rock's the joint. Every concert that I've been to of JLP's was on & popin, even when he equipment failed the one concert, it was still a nice concert, that he made happen. He vibe is always mellow, that's what sets a nice concert, relax & gel too be in the moment. Not a lot of concerts are chilled like that 🖤 so I do appreciate the effort that JLP puts into the whole process 🖤...
I follow him since I was a teenager. One of the best artist worldwide!!!
Rayford Griffin child of the most high God
Melhor show que eu já assisti. Inesquecível.
I’ve been to 5 JLP concerts in BR with distinct lineups, always all-star. After listening to this you felt like you were “vaccinated” against poor music. Thank you Mr Ponty.
Eu tinha um k7 desse show
Sensacional. Acho que passou na tv cultura. Foi um show histórico!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Melhor banda dele. Tecladista sensacional.
Tamo junto..... !!!!!
Rayford killing it
It's so much appreciated that this is on RUclips! A light to us all this concert is!!
AMEN!
That's a beautiful thing that Jean Luc Ponty does.
This is one of the hidden gems of RUclips!
Fortunately, no longer it is !
One of top three live concert I ever been in my life.
Needless to say that JLP were relatively unknown at that times in Brazil, and after the series of concerts, his fanbase grew exponentially.
@@nsgobbi I have been following JLP since the 70s just incredible.
the bassist here....is RANDY JACKSON!!
Of AMERICAN IDOL host fame!!
(Whoa: I didn't realize EITHER Steve Smith or Randy J played with JLP! Smith LEFT this band to join JOURNEY..... in 1978.......and Randy JOINED JOURNEY like ten years later!)
SMALL WORLD!

Tnx so much for this video by JLPonty, for a long time I've just listened to their music..until today where I can see these great musicians performance...tnx a million 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍👍👍👍👍🎖️🎖️🎖️🎖️🎖️🏅🏅🏅🏅🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
A lot more to come ... and I mean it. Some stuff is still in VHS, so those might take longer.
Fantastic to see them playing the music that introduced me to JLP. "Cosmic Messenger" was a revelation for a 24 yr old rocker.
Listen to this at 75% speed. Mad blunted!
Wow, thanks for uploading this precious material!
Glad you enjoy it!
The Little Prince of the violin. Beautiful memory of a meeting in 2000. 🎻
I saw JLP at the Palladium in NYC in 1980. Just an amazing show and smoked some excellent stuff. My other friends were on mescaline and were tripping, laughing their brains off as it was so intense.
I’m on the search for mescaline hehe
This takes me back to an incredible time in my life
Thank You for this fantastic concert.!! Have always been a big fan of JLP.! Thanks for bringing your great music to the world Jean Luc.!! Your fans appreciate you and all the great musicians that played with you.!! Thanks guys.!!❤️❤️
Super happy those who were rewarded being there that hot night, like me.
Same here!

Magnificent concert !Thank you so much !
Eu tava lá!!!!!
Eu estava lá. .... !!!!!!
English - Brazil has already been the stage for classics like this concert. It's a shame that we no longer have performances like this here. Brazil is experiencing an unprecedented cultural decline. The culture of garbage has taken over television and the internet. Bad music is poisoning the new generation of laypeople. Thankfully, we have recordings like this one from Jean Luc Ponty to give us an idea of how far behind we are.
:-(

lovely guitarist , didn't really hear enough of him on the albums that he recorded with Jean Luc , and it was criminal not having the camera on him for his solo on egocentric molrcules ....
You’ve got that right! I was about 5 feet from Bass player (one night before this), Guitar was opposite, I had him in full specter from head to toe. I was intrigued before and marveled after. Great experience.
una joya !!!
Where was this hiding, great stuff.
The guitarist for the 1986 portion of this is Scott Henderson. I don't know who the rest of the musicians are. Unfortunately, the video freezes up on me after Scott's solo in The Art of Happiness. This is the only footage I've seen of Scott playing with Jean Luc Ponty.
I saw Ponty's 1986 tour on stage as well. It was not Henderson though. Henderson was a perfect match to JLP
@@Ziegen-Sauger Henderson was good, as were all his other guitarists, but Allan Holdsworth was just perfection with JLP.
I was there...
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💡👍😎👌🇧🇷
Grande talento do rock instrumental.
Instrumental rock?
Can you reupload as the video freezes from about 55 mins. This is an important video and I would love to see all of it.
Thank you so so much for watching my channel, really appreciate it!!! The glitch you mention happened during TV Boradcast (TV2 Cultura as far as my memory goes), plus a reused VHS tape, years of storage, container shipment overseas and late conversion at home. This is bybdesign, sorry about that. DC.
@@Ziegen-Sauger No worries and thanks for explaining - all us JLP fans appreciate your upload. Whilst I love all JLP and his guitarists, Allan holdsworth was my idol and I pray one day some footage may emerge of the few live dates he did with JLP to support the EO album.
21:21 guitar TASTEEEE SOLO sounds like viola amazing players I was wondering who was on guitar great player....
Joaquim Lievano
I was enjoying this video sooo very much, but then it got stuck around 59 minutes, anyone experience the same problem?
So sorry, it was a broadcast issue long long long time ago when I first recorded. Made worse by the long stored VHS, so so sorry
@@Ziegen-Sauger Well it was incredibly enjoyable while it lasted. Ive been searching for a video of Jean-Luc Ponty performing live around this time which is my favorite, after the Cosmic Messenger and a A Taste of Passion albums, that to me are his hardest rocking and funkiest albums, which the bass and drums solos in Egocentric Molecules attest to, but I enjoyed it very very much, muito obrigado mi amigo!
And the fact that Joaquin Lievano is from Colombia gives us Latin Americans one more reason to be proud of!
@@martinpartida2269 I DID NOT KNOW THAT Martin, wow!!!! Lievano was on top of my favorites in the Fusion scene by the end of the 70's. Fine, elegant, precise. You made my day.
@@Ziegen-Sauger Thank you sir!
Alguém poderia disponibilizar o k7 desse show?
Ziegen, do you have the FM broadcast from the show you attended? I'd love to hear it.
Yes, I do have it. It is the full uncut concert.
@@Ziegen-Sauger, I have sent you a mail to the address found on your blog.
Hi does anybody know what synth is played by JLP when he doesn’t play the violin ?
ARP Odyssey in that era, dont know specific model
@@Ziegen-Sauger ARP Odyssey is the one played by C Rhyne, I talk about the one just next to JLP on his left side
@Christopher Freud JLP played ARP Odyssey 1, the large, wide workstation. But you are right, he started to take this on stage starting 84, likely this one is either an earlier model or something I am not aware. If you noticed, I was in first row, 3 meters from Jackson, it means I could only take pictures of the front of JLP keys
Puro ouro!!!!!!
Os músicos participam das gravações
Só cobra criada!!!
😂
At 59:10 the image freeze and at 59:37 the music stops...
Thank you for reading, much appreciated indeed. Consider this video was recorded with a time-programmed unattended PAL-M VHS player/recorder in 1980. A few flaws are forgiven.
@@Ziegen-Sauger Sure, I'm no complain at all. I'm is a marvelous show you provide. Thank you!!
Watch out, Randy's has cut loose. He's no Stanley Clark but he'll do. Now when it comes to Rayford, we are on a whole nother level. I think that (no) I know that he's up there w Cobham, no doubt. JLP only plays w the best of the best. I wonder if he's into physics as well as fusion, because he puts lots of energy into his music 🎶 🖤...
