    Hacks...
Someone I knew marked his equipment using zip ties (plastic cable ties) in a single color. Most people mark equipment with gaff tape, but using zip ties stands out because it's different. I've expanded on that a little though. For zippers, I don't trim the zip tie;I leave the tail end sticking out so it makes an easy-to-find zipper pull. Having these oddball zip tie "antennae" also helps to quickly identify your luggage on an airport carousel. For bags or case with no good place to put a label, I take a piece of plastic maybe an eighth of an inch thick, and couple of inches long and maybe an inch wide. I drill one or two holes (one at either end), zip tie it to whatever's convenient - a handle, a zipper, etc., and then attach a label to that hunk of plastic. Zip ties are cheap so I bought about 1,000 of them in red and I label almost everything. I'd label the cats but I'm afraid I'd cut off the circulation to their tails... ; )
I'm paranoid about my lenses. I know of photographers who don't use lens caps and the thought of that gives me nightmares. I always have caps on my lenses when they're not attached to a camera (and I now carry spare lens caps in my bag), I always have a lens hood on (they put some space between the front element and all the hazards) and I always have a UV or otherwise clear filter on my lenses. I'd rather lose the tiny, almost imperceptible image quality in the quest to protect my investment.
I have a metal plate that I've attached a label to that reads "Batteries, dumb ass." Whenever I take the batteries out of my camera bag for charging I put that plate on top inside the bag. If I'm stupid enough to grab the bag and go without checking it first then I deserve to arrive somewhere with no batteries. (Now that I think about it, I should leave one fully-charged battery in the bag at all times.)
    My cleaning regimen:
Lenses rarely need cleaning, but when I do I start by blowing air on them, keep whatever surface I'm cleaning facing down so the dust and grit falls to the floor. Then I take a cotton swab - COTTON, not synthetic - and apply a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on it, the purer the better. I use that to clean the filter on the lens, swirling from the middle toward the edge. I never need to do this on the rear elements.
    Camera (DSLRs):
    1. With no lens attached, point the lens mount down towards the ground.
    2. Use a blower, NOT canned air, to gently blow out the lens box.
    3. Activate the camera's built-in cleaning function, sometimes jiggling the camera a little.
    4. Lock the mirror up.
    5. Attach a Fujin vacuum unit to the camera. They fit just like lenses.
    6. Turn on the vacuum and let it run for a couple of minutes. While doing that, use the automatic cleaning feature again. Fire off a few blank frames to jar any gunk loose. Jiggle the camera a bit as the vacuum runs.
    7. Turn off the vacuum and remove it, then look at something light and even (a wall perhaps) through the viewfinder to check for dirt specks. If any are found, start the cleaning process again.
By doing those things I've never had to bring my camera in for cleaning. I'm sure I will at some point, but for now what I do is working well.

Hi Scott, Moggy compliments your (camera) personality so perfectly, she will be highly requested in the future, I'm sure. Would you consider making a video about how to get into writing for photography? I have come across a couple of opportunities or calls here and there, but never for an amount of money that would be worth considering, - rather for the popular currency of exposure. Best wishes from Switzerland.

Some really sound advice there Scott, I've always been a firm believer in diversifying income streams, sometimes it's worth taking a step back to see if you have viable and marketable skills outside of taking photographs.

Thanks, I must say your videoes are really good and I think you’re going to grow a very good community! Im 17 and for me its: Livestreaming for the local newspaper (mostly sports, but also voting day for example). Taking images for my newspaper, usually on things I stumble over or on other jobs. Camera operator for bigger events, multicam productions. And then I also got my own business doing mainly video and photos if wanted. Most of the work untill now has been for the newspaper, but my company is growing and I’m learning and re-investing. :D

Interesting stuff as always. I agree that it is important and necessary to diversify income these days. I've started writing for mag's as a way to get my photography published along side the article. Small beans at the moment but the publicity is useful.

    Hi Scott,
Came across this video on fstoppers.
Great, informative video. Maybe I missed it, but do you sell prints? If so, how much of your income is from that?
Also, I remember another article from you about your "odd" food photography when I saw the gold bars and spaghettios on your portfolio. Lovely images, both food and portrait!

    • @TinHouseStudioUK
      @TinHouseStudioUK  4 года назад +2

I sell the odd print, but it’s not really a viable business plan unless you are a known photographer, so it’s more a couple of rounds down the pub than anything else

with renting the equipment, do you rent it out from the studio yourself or it's through your photography business?
