UPDATE! Since posting the video I was able to track down a descendant of Florian and Antoinette who said she didn't even have any photographs of the family! 2nd UPDATE! I will be doing a follow-up video in conjunction with a great-granddaughter of Florian and Antoinette as well as some other family members! Bring DNA into the mix, you say? Maybe I just will!
That's what i came on the youtube page to ask. Any chance you could show us their reaction either in video or text? :) Awesome video. I like the concept. Maybe make it into a thing ? :)
I've always liked the driver who smiled at the camera, you rarely see that in the old videos and photos, but the fact that he smiled and I instinctively smiled back. It felt like a connection through the ages.
The reactions from the late 19th century and early 20th century to cameras seems to vary. I have seen a lot of people smile, almost all young men whose curiosity is contagious while the women tend to act demure and aloof.
Just a note about the chauffeur... on the other video with this film, there were lots of comments about how the black guy was a 'lowly servant,' etc. It's important to remember that in those days, driving an automobile was difficult, and would have been considered a skill. If the man was a full-time chauffeur (which was likely) his job was that car in its entirety. Not just driving, but keeping it clean, and keeping it running. And maintaining a car like that would have been a daily chore. As we would think of it today, he was a combination chauffeur, mechanic, and detailer. My point is that he was a skilled worker with a respectable job, and he was probably being paid accordingly. Also it's kinda funny how he's excited to be on camera, but none of the family seem to care, and then he's kinda sad about that.
They probably didn't know what a film camera even was, in those days you open a shutter and the object has to stay still otherwise the image blurs, they might have though the camera was just being moved somewhere
Exactly! And back in those days, cars would break down very frequently. There was no guarantee that your car would even make it around the corner and back. Car repair and maintenance was the number 1 job for a driver back then.
It really makes you think about just how brief a time we really are on this earth and how easily forgotten we become even to our own family a few generations removed down the line. To think the thousands of people in that video, who all had their own lives, personalities, accomplishments and failures, are now all gone.
Can also make one think about consciousness itself, which never changes, is never lost, and never dies. Can there really be 7 billion different experiences of consciousness, all limited and intermittent, or is it just One Beingness expressing itself in many individual ways throughout time and space?
In the end , when all has been said and done; the only thing we have and the only one who can truly remember and never forget us is the GOD of the bible. If you love him he'll love you forever. Ma'am, respectfully, if you were to view 50 million videos that were 11 minutes and 27 seconds long, in perfect succession, without sleeping... it would take *ahem* 1 thousand and 89 years, 3 months, 26 days, 10 hours, and 40 minutes. (That's correct, by the way.) Thank you, that is all.
They were publishing peoples data in public magazines. Funny how precious our data is today. Funny how we’ve learned how to exploit any kind of data today.
Back when there were NO traffic rules. Gotta love how random it was - pedestrians, trolley tracks, horse and carriages, autos... They called 10th Avenue "Death Avenue" for a reason!
I'm really proud to see a Polish family in this video. I'm also surprised that you mentioned the January uprising, a very important event in our history. Thank you for such a great episode. Greetings from Gdynia, Poland!
I don’t say this lightly: I am truly filled with admiration for you. Your interest, your passion and your skill have worked wonders. I hope you never tire of your pursuits.
Awesome, my grandfather was born in NYC in 1911, down in Greenwich Village. His father died just two years later in 1913, it was pretty rough back then with influenza and TB... My grandfather was one of just 3 that survived out of 7 kids. His uncle had 4 that survived out of 7, but he also died in 1908, and his wife in 1912, meaning my grandfather had 4 orphaned cousins by the time he was born. It would be a real dream to find a video of them, or even a photo. Nobody's ever found a photo of my great-grandfather who died in 1913.
HA! When this video first started bouncing around the internet, I was enthralled, and as soon as I saw that touring car, I thought that it would be entirely possible to track down the identity of all the people in it through the licence plate. Kudos to you for doing the detective work!
this is where the youtube algorithm gets creepy. i watched this video and was THINKING i wonder what happened to those people, and yeop got this video recommended.
I really like the chauffeur.. he's the nice one.. he never knew back then that he would still be cheering people up all of this time later.. the family looks like they had a little tiff. But they are so interesting I wonder what it is that so many people have focused on this family and remember them I sure have
Love how the boy (Francis) says something and the driver responds with a head-turn and a smile. 111 years ago, before the Titanic went down and forever a mystery about whatever their friendly exchange was about.
@@GeneaVlogger I bet you will great video and good job finding them people. Please don't give up on looking for him. I beg you, his family would be so happy to see him. Also us to finally know who he was.
It's weird how these people were simply living their lives, in that one moment in 1911 before any of us were around. Yet people from 109 years later would see them and proceed to find information about them. It's a cool thing how we managed to remember these people in a way, if you really think about it. Most people who were around in 1911 are now forgotten. What will people know about us in 2129?
WOW! I wondered who the people in the car were too. I was so happy to find your video. Turns out the Lockowitz family lived up the block from me on 8th Street in Brooklyn I have done some research on my house, but no videos have surfaced! I'm going to check out the 1922, 1930, and 1940 census records for that address and the Lockowitz family. Thanks for posting.
While I was watching the 1911 Trip Through New York footage, I saw the family in the vehicle and thought 'that family must be traceable'. I was thrilled to see this video on the related list - it's incredible that so many things can be lost to time, yet there are people out there who want to unearth the mystery.
Nothing mindblowing about these people, no car chases, no explosions, no murders, no soundtrack...yet I find it fascinating and very compelling! I look forward to viewing similar videos.
Great Job!! I've seen this video many times and wondered who they were. I too wish there was info on the driver. He's the only one smiling. Thank you for doing this...well done.
I love the man driving so much! he seems super happy to be there driving and talking with everyone! I hope he lived a long and happy life :') also i'm going to assume he wasn't on their section of the census because he probably didn't live with them? idk
@@sks17873 They were also usually more than chauffers. Many car manuals from the time mention having your 'man' service the vehicle and describing how to do so.
@@hooballoolify Being a driver for the wealthy was a pretty good job then. Servants of that caliber usually lived in the house and were paid halfway decently considering they got room and board too. He's employed, not a slave. He's joking with the guy's kid who seems to be asking about the camera. You have no idea how this family treated him or didn't.
Funny, but I just watched the colorized version of this footage and I thought about if it would be possible to identify people in the car based on the old license plate. kicker is that I was also born in Poland and immigrated to US when I was a teenager. Cheers and excellent video.
Thank you very much for posting this and for doing the research. As a member of the family that sold the house in 2017, it was fascinating to learn about it’s original owners.
My pleasure! Bob contacted me to tell me he saw the video as well and told me he heard about it from the current owners. I love the fact the house has only been owned by 3 families, and a member of every family who owned the house has seen this video!
This is so cool! I've seen these clips a few times. Every time I see an old film like this I think these were people living a whole life and here there now, appearing for a few seconds a hundred years later. And yeah, I wonder, who were these people? Awesome that you did this!
My mom meticulously puts together photo albums. She can spend hours on it. I told her that in 100 years, nobody will care about people in that album unless one of our descendants becomes famous, notorious or super rich. She paused for a moment and then just kept on working on the photo album. Her spending hours on a photo album is probably more worthwhile than my hours spent watching RUclips vids.
She paused to look at you to see who you were 😂 She gave you life! And there you were telling her it's not worth it. I'm not digging at you. Most people don't think it's all that important unless the family is Elite or something. I hope that when you look at your mom's photo albums in a few years that you'll be forever grateful to her ❤
Brilliant analysis worthy of the best of RUclips. The driver was much more skilled than most today with our century of automobile refinement. Notice how deftly he navigates around horse carriages and streetcars without being struck by maniacal tail gators. No turn signals, no brake lights, no traffic lights while driving the crudest unsynchronized manual transmission and making it look EASY.
This is amazing! Found a comment about your research under the original video ( or rather the "remaster" colored video). It was cool to read. Especially because I'm Polish. But now hearing about this process is even more cooler than just reading :D
The thing I find hard to believe is Florian’s age. There is no way that man was in his early 40’s. Either he was lying about his age, or he led a very hard life. It is miraculous you were able to find all the information from the license plate. I was also shocked at the number of cars registered at the time.
Men and women didn’t lead easy lives then. Florian was an immigrant with a fairly large family, a business with more than one location, and the lifestyle of the early 20th century including a diet heavy in red meat, possibly cigar smoking etc. It’s not improbable that along with his hairstyle, suit and hat, he looked older than 40. But I could picture him in a Yankees cap and t-shirt and he will seem younger. It’s sad that he died at 47 of ‘apoplexy’ - most likely a heart attack.
I don’t believe the guy up front was 40 year old Florian. I know a century ago people looked older than their years due to hardships in one way or another, but that’s one stretch of the imagination that my gut instinct does not accept. Man looks like early/mid 60s at least.
Thanks for this video! It’s so interesting. It’s odd to see Florian in this video and to know that he’s only probably in his late 30’s, early 40’s here, based on his age of death at 47. He looks to be quite an older gentleman here - possibly in his 50’s or so. His death of apoplexy or stroke/cerebral hemorrhage or blood clot. In the full version of this video shows the oddly-shaped building which is still in NYC today is the famous Flatiron Building, something I’ve walked past many times. Thanks so much for this piece of history!
I saw this old film clip several years ago and wondered at the time who they might be and what of their background. Your video was so interesting and I truly appreciate your hard investigative work. Thanks again for giving “life” to this family. Gloria from Mississippi
Saw the video years ago. Then came here after seeing a comment on fb just now, where someone said a guy on youtube found the family. Futuristic full circle. Love the research made!
Brilliant! I too was quite taken by that license plate, seeing this film with modern enhancement and colorization yesterday. Hats off to you for doing the detective work and showing their fascinating story. I, too, have often seen old film and wondered if perhaps any of my ancestors appeared in it.
This is so awesome... I remember watching this video about 5 years ago n just remember thinking wow these people don't even understand how important this video would become... and to find out who the people in that car scene just takes it to a whole different level. Keep going man you are doing important work with this information!! Very well done!!👍🏾
I saw the original video including the car scene and was intrigued when I found your follow-up video. Well done to bring a snippet of history to life and make it relevant. So many people look at old footage and have no concept how this could possibly relate to them, today.
This is fantastic. I had watched this very video a few months back and I too am fascinated by this kind of stuff. Good on you for doing the work to research this family. BRAVO!
As an eager but unskilled and untrained sleuth of my own family ancestry, I am in complete awe of your knowledge and dedication to uncovering the mystery of the family depicted in this old film. You not only gave names to the faces, you gave us a window into their family’s history, hardships, and successes. I especially appreciate your efforts to identify the driver and servant. The driver’s apparent enjoyment of the novel experience of being filmed is comfortably shared with the stoic appearing patriarch of the family. That moment captured for eternity is what makes the entire seem so human and relatable. I have subscribed to your channel and am eager to begin learning from you. Thank you for sharing your gifts!
That's really amazing you found random peoples info from back in the day.. Just imagine if the family you speak of today randomly seen this video... Imagine the shock & excitement you just put into there life's of them not knowing about a video of there great ancestors from over a 100 years ago. That is honestly amazing. If i were to stumble across this & see my great family in an old school early 1900s car... You best believe id make it a mission of mine to find & buy that similar car to the 1 they were driving just to have as an family airloom type thing.. As something extravagant as this... To some it would be meaninglessness to own a car that my great ancestors owned long long ago but to me it would be like the coolest thing ever! Very very awesome video & great work in making it all come together.. It is mind blowing
I had a similar thought of descendants finding this and then thought...I should just find them! So I did, and made a follow up video where I interview a granddaughter of Florian and Antoinette - ruclips.net/video/B38qoCKEn24/видео.html
A few weeks ago I saw the film also and I was wondering who was this family. Even the driver, I Just Saw your video and I got my answer. You doing good sir.

Could have gotten an infection with gangrene settled in, and amputation followed, the medical profession did not have advanced knowledge back then, he could have taken a fall in his yard or something.
Amazing work! I have been going down a rabbit hole on videos like this the last hours..So interesting that these "long forgotten" ppl have got their lives remembered by the off chance of being captured on video while going on their day to day erands..They will now be on the internet forever for anyone in the world to see..Mind blowing.
What great detective work! This is so interesting. I am crossing my fingers that someone related to the chauffeur will see this video, recognize their cool great grandpa or whoever and contact you. Thanks again for the interesting insights.
Wow, so interesting. I was just watching the long version of the video and commented on wondering who the people in it were....your timing is awesome. Plus your research and how you went about it was so interesting!!!!
Excellent research, what a cool thing to do! You should consider sending a letter to the residents of 548 8th street and telling them about the family who used to live there.
After the Lochowitz family sold the home, there have only been two owners of the house at 548 8th St. I have been in touch with both owners and they have seen this video as well. In fact, the current owner is the one who sent the video to the last owner, who purchased the house from the Lochowitz family.
I really enjoy seeing old videos, wish I had some of people in my tree. I've always been curious to know who and where people in old pics/vids are and what happened to them. I've seen that car video before and thought that, then I just happen to browse RUclips and here we are. 👍
You did so well finding out so much info on that family , very well done . You have helped immortalise them , i know it's a bit weird but i did wonder about them as they do stand out in the 1911 film , it's clear they were at least comfortably financially and it's fascinating to have an insight into who they were , a little about their history , just a pity there was no info about the chauffeur .
This was so great! When I first saw the old movies I was so interested in that family as well, all crowded into the car with a chauffeur… loved finding your video next!
I happened on to this video and was completely fascinated with this video and others. I love watching old videos, looking at photos of people in the 19th and 20th centuries. I’ve got to say, Florian does NOT look 40 years old. He looks almost old enough to be Antoinette’s father! Your tenacity in your research is very impressive. I’ve seen many old videos on You Tube and always wondered who they are, what kind of life did they have, their background and history and were they happy. My husband’s grandmother had a lot of genealogy info on her family. I was looking through one of her photo albums and was stunned to see a photo of an ancestor who looked nearly identical to my husband! It just blew me away! I was hooked on genealogy. When I see videos like yours I’m overwhelmed by the amount of research it takes to find who you’re looking for. I can’t even imagine how daunting it is sometimes. Anyway, I subbed to your channel and am binge-watching as I post this comment.
Fantastic detective work!! And did you notice the obituary mentioned how Florian was raced to the hospital via the 'family car'????!!!! I wonder if they still had that 1911 model? Wouldn't that be the topper of this, lol??!! Also, I see that a license plate is visible on another vehicle in the video--did you happen to look that one up too? I also have seen this video before, but never thought to figure out who the people were. Again, great sleuthing, and wow, what a wonderful gift for the descendant to have actual film of their ancestors!!
Thank you! I did notice the other vehicle, behind the Lochowicz family, but couldn't find it in the listing of licenses. Although I did test this same research plan with the car I found in this image and found it traced to Blanche G Josias who lived on Long Island - www.reddit.com/r/nyc/comments/79b18k/1910_fifth_avenue_south_from_thirtysixth_street/
So enjoyed watching you film about the New York family. I love watching early 1900s films and ALWAYS wondered about the people in the films. Please do more videos and find more families. What a wonderful and amazing video. Thank you for sharing.
Thats so cool what u'v done here dude!! Just this morning i'v wach that old picture film restored and colorurised by som other crayzy guy on YT,wondering who those peple may be,and BANG You come up on my play list to explain my considerations! Awsome Job!! Ceep it on movin bro!! ;) Ps. I'm from Polland ;)
Fantastic research here! Really inspiring. Two things, you must’ve seen the license plate on the car behind them any chance of research in that too? Second thingI noticed was the driver say if you words, I tried to lip read it but I just I’m not that good, have you seen the forensic lipreading video on RUclips? It’s fascinating just type in “forensic lipreading.”
When my grandparents died many years ago, one of the things left behind in their house were large old portrait photographs of a man and a woman, both in their middle ages. They’re each in antique wood and silver frames and are well over 100 years old. The issue is that nobody knows who these people were. They weren’t relatives of ours and they weren’t the previous owners of my grandparent’s house (my grandfather bought the house from his father-in-law and even he didn’t know who they were. I’ve always called them the “Old Guys” but have always thought it would be fun to find out who they really were. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
If you feel comfortable taking the photographs out of their frames then looking at the edges and/or back may reveal information, especially since people sometimes wrote the names of the people and/or the year/date on the back. You can also look into consulting with a photograph specialist. Ava Cohn of Sherlock Cohn may be someone worth contacting for help, you can find out more about her at her website - sherlockcohn.com. Good luck!
So awesome. You’re a great story teller. I love history and it’s amazing you were able to retrieve this information. I wish you could’ve gotten more info on the driver. Being African American myself, I love seeing and hearing this type of history. And you’re right. The driver seems to really be enjoying the moment. Great work.
Fascinating video, it's great to put names to the faces. It's interesting that you mention how the maid doesn't look her age (I know it may not be her) but you don't mention how old Florian looks. At the time of the film he would have been 39 or forty years old but looks at least 20 years older. I wonder if that is actually Florian or maybe and older family member or friend?
@@GeneaVlogger Yes, considering that back then people appeared to always look much older than they were (maybe down to life being tougher in those days) it IS probably Florian. One other thing I wondered - Could this scene have been staged for the film? All the family together and the happy mood of the chauffeur makes it look like it wasn't just a random scene the camera happened upon. I wonder if they were friends of the filmmaker? Do we know who the filmmaker was? If they are friends maybe the filmmaker kept a record of how it all came about.
@@moow950 Based on what people looked like back then, there's no way the man in front is late 60s. Easily could be 40. Even the boy looks way older than his 14 years. Life was harder then. Even my grandparents who died in the early 1970s in their mid-50s looked ancient...even in photos.

And then the cautionary tale to us today...

You kind-of brought them back to life with this video. They were forgotten by history and now we learn about their lives

What will people know about us in 2129?
nothing unless you tell them. I have written a book. not to be published necessarily.

I hope he lived a long and happy life :')
also i'm going to assume he wasn't on their section of the census because he probably didn't live with them? idk
The driver looked happy, but let's stop the sugarcoating. Racial discrimination happened in the South and North. I hope he had a good life.
He may not have been included on their 1910 census because they bought the car in 1911, hence them only requiring a chauffeur in 1911 and beyond.
@@sks17873 They were also usually more than chauffers. Many car manuals from the time mention having your 'man' service the vehicle and describing how to do so.

2:30 Notice they don't have brake lights so he has to signal "I'm stopping" to allow the horse to cut in front.

My observation is that the steering wheel is on the right side like that in Britain, rather than on the left side as is in the US currently.
To me it looks like he was stopping and then finger signaling the carriage to go in front.
Funny, but I just watched the colorized version of this footage and I thought about if it would be possible to identify people in the car based on the old license plate. kicker is that I was also born in Poland and immigrated to US when I was a teenager. Cheers and excellent video.

The vast majority of my ancestors were just simple farmers yet i find them infinitely more interesting than any of my famous realtives.
She paused to look at you to see who you were 😂 She gave you life! And there you were telling her it's not worth it. I'm not digging at you. Most people don't think it's all that important unless the family is Elite or something. I hope that when you look at your mom's photo albums in a few years that you'll be forever grateful to her ❤
A descendant that loves genealogy will be obsessed over those photo albums.
I think she paused to keep from slapping you with the back side of her hand 😅❤

Brilliant analysis worthy of the best of RUclips. The driver was much more skilled than most today with our century of automobile refinement. Notice how deftly he navigates around horse carriages and streetcars without being struck by maniacal tail gators. No turn signals, no brake lights, no traffic lights while driving the crudest unsynchronized manual transmission and making it look EASY.
Totally agree Lawrence, those autos would not have been easy in traffic like that.
This is amazing! Found a comment about your research under the original video ( or rather the "remaster" colored video). It was cool to read. Especially because I'm Polish. But now hearing about this process is even more cooler than just reading :D

My grandmother always insisted that we add names to the back on the back of photographs.
I agree it looks more like a Grandfather to me , probably Florian wasn’t there , but busy at work .

Good luck!
That'd be really cool to see!
@James Wilder the photos are over 100 years old, maybe that could be why?

Fascinating video, it's great to put names to the faces. It's interesting that you mention how the maid doesn't look her age (I know it may not be her) but you don't mention how old Florian looks. At the time of the film he would have been 39 or forty years old but looks at least 20 years older. I wonder if that is actually Florian or maybe and older family member or friend?
It could be someone else, but based on the time period I think he easily looks like someone who would be around 39 years old.
GeneaVlogger No, this man clearly is not 40, but 55-60 plus. He is probably Florian’s father.
@MVE And you can confidently confirm this using what techniques beyond just a vague opinion of what '40' looks like?
@@moow950 Based on what people looked like back then, there's no way the man in front is late 60s. Easily could be 40. Even the boy looks way older than his 14 years. Life was harder then. Even my grandparents who died in the early 1970s in their mid-50s looked ancient...even in photos.
