I never expect tips but am thankful for them. In my private practice, zero tipping policy. In public clinic , 18-20% of the treatment price. ✌
expecting tips just makes you feel sad. i always try to tip whenever i can, i love making someones day especially when i have the money. we should all try to support each other!
You should feel bad. The physicality of this job deserves a tip. If massage therapist know you're a shit tipper they will give you a shit service. If you are a good one they will go above and beyond. These people we work on would be in a lot of physical pain without us. When we only make $15 $20, tips mean everything to us. Imagine doing 6-7 massages a day st $15 a day with a $5 tip. When at the end of the day we are making your pain go away. that $5 tip makes us not want to do what we do. Ridiculous.
You sound very entitled. There's thousands of people in your profession. If you give me a shit massage then I'll drive 5 minutes in the other direction and get a good one. Frankly, you make me not want to tip anyone ever again.
@@meganburns8602 I disagree. Because its a profession. I work all day but I never get tipped. And I don't expect any tips either. I feel like the tips ruined all the hard work I just did. Ofcourse, I get paid for what I do, and that's it. Tipping is an American thing. Everyone from an uber driver to a massage therapist expects tips. If you go to any other country, tips are considered rude. How about the employers paying the employees according to their competence instead of demanding tips.
I don't expect tips either. I work in a chiropractor's office. Most people that use insurance to pay for the massage aren't going to be thinking about tips & that's ok with me. I totally understand. There are also people who maybe can't afford to tip but need the massage.
I also totally get the high demanding clients who never tip but see you every week. Yeah, I try not to let that effect my thinking but it does. I can't help it, I'm human. I don't let it effect the massage I give though. I may be thinking to myself, "Oh God, I have so & so today.", but that's about as far as it goes. I don't let it show. I'm talking about those very hard to please clients. I have one woman I see every other week & she'll try to dictate the entire massage. She will tell ME when to move on & what body part to go to next. It drives me insane because I have a routine. My own routine that I'm used to. Then she'll ask for more pressure, but it's too much when I increase it. There's NO happy medium with this woman! She puts me through hell & never tips. I always greet her with a smile though & I try my best to do what she wants.
On the other hand I have my sweet clients that don't tip & I'm always happy to see them regardless. Being very demanding & not leaving a tip is very different.
LadyScarface Angel I've known similar clients. Absolutely drives me crazy too
LadyScarface Angel poor u and it really remind me one of my client
I confess that I'd never thought of tipping in a chiropractor's office. At least I was polite and cooperative (and as poor as a church mouse). If I ever go back to a chiropractor, I'll keep tipping in mind.
How much you get paid a hr working at Chiropractor office as massage therapist & what to expect ?
Thanks for this video. I just got back from my first massage and I wasn't sure about the etiquette. My wife talked me into it since it's pretty pricey but she didn't want to go alone to the spa treatment I got for her. I didn't realize what I was missing! Wow!
Bro, this video is great and I love your perspective. I was approached by the “masseuse” (my regular actual therapist wasn’t available) at a Thai massage place bc I paid for 3hrs. She was pushing for more than a 20% tip bc another client 30+% for 30 min, which she shouldn’t have been showing me, but cudos to them. I didn’t, and the more I thought about it, I realize that’s an F’d up business model, where I have to pay for a service AND pay YOUR employee... FOH!!
Same! And if the person tips me, I have a container that I put it in for donations. At the end of each month I give it to a different charity!
A true professional therapist does not accept gratuities. Do you tip your Doctor ? Dentist ? Any medical professional ? Like this person I also donate any gratuity that a client may insists giving me. If I need more money I just increase the price.
@@jameshenson2297 the amount that doctors and dentists get paid are astronomical. Not to mention and the pain we go through trying to fix your body. We work had and get paid shitty. Which is why we rely on our tips. If that weren't the case there would be a tip option.
Megan Burns my point is if your client tips you then they feel that you deserve more money for what you do. Therefore you can raise your rates.
@@meganburns8602 they are getting paid that much because they have years and years of education. It is not that massage is easy, but it is also not the hardest job. And trying to impress the client just for the tip is not nice. I know people who plain out demand 20% tips. So if one is paying $100 for the services, they end up paying $120 in reality even though it is going to 2 different places.
I’m so glad u posted this! I’ve always wondered what % the therapist made at a spa or chain. I usually do 15-20% but if it’s at a much cheaper than market rate place with curtain dividers or similar, I give much more. I wish I could be your client! Lol thanks for the info :)
I just love watching this guy. He’s kind and smart and super cute too.
GAY THOUGHTS....I DON'T BLAME YOU, I GOT THEM TOO
You right dude I'm also a massage therapist,.. I like your Chanel..
I work hard at every massage. I do my best . Yes I love to get tips . But I don't complain if I don't get one. I just try harder next time. Tips are important on many levels. They let you know you are doing good work.
You guys heard of Massage Envy-massage factory. Well, it starts out at $16. Tipping is expected and if the therapist was excellent in delivering above and beyond be respectful and considerate-tip. Those of you owning your business as a therapist, your prices should be set where you do not need to be tipped. $80 for an hour is not the same as $16 an hour. I’m a licensed massaged therapist with 21 years of experience. I have great skills that I have learned on my own and acquired by other great therapist that shared their skills. And let me tell you, this job isn’t getting any easier. I’m seeing clients that are obese and wants to be stretched, ppl with extremely dense tissues that request deep tissue and ppl that comes in once every 3 to 6 month to expect a miracle. Just sharing my experience.
One of the people I massaged had graduated from the school I'm currently doing my clinicals in, and she received $200 once as a tip!! Wow! I'm only 27 massages into my 50 and have received $20 as my best tip.
I think 200$ tip is overproportionate... be careful with that kind of people... they might expect something in return.
I appreciate how professional you are. I am curious how you handle clients that come to you because you’re attractive vs what a great massage you give. There are a lot of creepers out there. I’m not talking about inappropriate behavior but you know that it’s an infatuation not about the massage. ?
Tony Natoli doesn’t matter how u get customers, just get them and go with it
Tony Natoli Yeah that annoys me because they go on and on about how they just can't get a massage from an unattractive person this and that......it's so offensive.
Yeah I get it certainly you have the right to who touches you but it is definitely clear that my certificates are mediocre worthless if it's about how I look. And it sounds like customers are not an option when I age and look less youthful and attractive. We all know no one is exempt from aging
Tony Natoli ya, right You mean, Extra service?
I have clients do this to me as a Dietitian. They clearly aren't there to improve their eating habits. I keep it professional and don't cross any lines. That's all you can do. Or do you say "I think you should leave" to anyone you happen to charm? That's pretty stupid and shows you aren't ok with people being attracted to you and not acting on it. It is a professional relationship, And sometimes people learn more or get more out of it if you are attractive to them. If that motivates them to take better care of themselves (come to diet therapy sessions, come to massage therapy sessions) well it is a value added service. Everyone wants attention from people they find attractive. That, in itself, can be therapeutic.
Completely agree! I mean you get used to it and surprised when you work for a chiropractor 😂
It's a little different over here in Germany. Most of the times you don't get any Tip. Sometimes maybe 1 to 3 EUR/Dollar tops
I agree. I think no where in Europe it is customary to tip. It may be an American thing, that everybody expects a tip.
I tip my therapist $20.00 , I pay $60.00 for an hr. I know body work is hard.
George Cruz and sometimes their commission not high, all money go to boss😢
come to me your generous
As a therapist I don’t ACCEPT tips. What other “therapist” works for tips? None. As long as we in this profession take tips and work for employers who use tips to fill in the gap for low pay we will be something other than a “therapist”. We will be massuers and masseuses. We have to stop this practice entirely. We do extremely hard work and are worth so much more than we get. Our pay rate shouldn’t be variable. Tips incentivize therapists to over extend themselves in the hopes of making a little more. Then we wonder why there’s so many injuries and burnouts.
I always tip my therapist at least $20 in addition to the price they advertise before the session.
oconadamify ۆجڕخلعی
Tipping BEFORE the service is delivered? What for? A tip is a way to thank the person when you are happy with the service you get, but what if the massage is bad? Is it because you feel the therapist will put more pressure or passion into his work if you tip them in advance?
No, I tip the therapist after like everyone else. When I said before the session, I was referring to the price that’s listed for the amount of time for the session. The price that’s advertised “before” the session even happens. So “after” the session, I pay the advertised amount plus a $20 or more tip.
I never tip business owners who also provide the service and that goes for any service related business since they have the power to set the prices and will take the full profit.
Most spa already pay the MT less because they know part of the earning is from tipping. So without the tipping, most MT will not earn their full check. This is just how it is in America. Or else the Employers will charge the clients more. If they given you a good service with no problem, please don’t cheat them
How it is in North America. In most countries I've been in South America, it's usually 50/50, depending on the Spa, the therapist gets to keep even more... But, we don't tip. Massages here are not crazy expensive, but they are not that cheap either.
Tipping is expected because therapists are paid crappy. Usually they only get paid for the time they work and not the time they are there at work. So $16 for an hour is a horrible amount of pay. HORRIBLE!! How much did you pay for your education and licensing and continuing education?????? You gotta pay for that!!! My friend. I can tell from your video's that you give a great massage. Especially compared to other therapists. TIP TIP TIP SHOULD BE THE ANSWER THOUGH.
I get that when you're on your own you charge what you want to be paid and that a roast client is WAY better than a one time tip.
But when therapists work for ANYBODY OTHER THAN THEMSELVES they get laid bad...and remember, when you work for yourself YOU have to pay Rent...advertising...laundry...EVERYTHING.
Every client should just EXPECT to tip something. Something. IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF it was worthy WORTHY of a tip.
this was an awesome video, I feel the EXACT same thing. I'm always just appreciative to recieve anything, but other therapist in my spa will literally RAGE over not getting tipped. my moto is if I'm about the client and I don't worry about the money the money will come and it's always worked for me.
I'm still very new at massage therapy but was wondering, when you worked in the spa setting, (preferably commission based) did you give every client the best massage to the best of your ability, or limit it based on the session? Not to be confused with, do you do deep tissue on a sweedish scheduled massage, but Do you always put your heart into it? I'm a therapist that likes to ALWAYS resonate with the clients needs regardless of pricing, but I've had therapists tell me not to do that because you're depreciating you're work. I understand where they're coming from, but I find I have a higher retention rate if I am about the client versus just giving them a sloppy massage because everyone wants sweedish.
have you ever been proposed to by a client after a massage?
I had a 50.00 half hour of a therapist working on my back in Bellevue WA & the girl who worked on me added a 20.00 tip to my bank card. Granted it was my first back & shoulder massage in years, but I can't really afford to pay that much percentage all the time for a tip.
Well, I am a year late, but you should have paid cash. You could have even called the place of business and said you never agreed to it. If she refuses to give you the money back, that she LITERALLY stole from you, then you call your bank, and file a dispute. I am getting worked up, I know. I hate "legal thieves" or "legal stealing".
I wish I watched this beforehand . I tipped a massage therapist $5 and she scoffed at me and was looking at me like thats it 😳 I was super shocked . Her English was very poor & I know she’s from China so idk how much they tip there but I tipped 10% so idk
My sister goes to a massage therapist, but today she sent her a text telling her things like my sessions will be shorter, I can't see you every week, etc. My sister said, "Oh probably because I don't tip. I am going to have to start tipping". Wow! Tipping should not be forced!
Word. I never go into a massage expecting a tip and it's nice if they do. I don't even ask. However if I am handling payment for my massage therapists as I am checking their client out, I'll say, "well if you want to give them a tip let me know before I run your card." That way I could get my teammate a tip for them in a no pressure kind of way.
There is an old Buddhist quote that goes "Be strict with yourself, be compassionate to others." That's how I like to run my practice.
Good stuff man, I appreciate you creating informative videos for other massage therapists to learn from. I recently enrolled in massage school just so I can solidify my foundation on the human body and have license to practice a more advanced bodywork modality: Erik Dalton’s Myoskeletal therapy.
It’s more so on pain, posture, muscle imbalance and body alignment. I believe it will really elevate/evolve your practice if that’s what you’re interested in.. I mean I do see that you have some videos on how to work on postural muscles. Speaking of which, if you could do more videos on essential muscles to work on/massage techniques for better posture, it’d be really awesome since I don’t learn too much that in school (just general technique/sequence) and since it’ll be a while until I enroll in Erik’s program myself. It’ll really speed up my learning curve and help many others as well. You also seem like you have pretty good mechanics and can teach it fairly well so that’s always a plus. Thanks and god bless ;)
I tip $30-$40 a session. They deserve it. Plus they appreciate it and give me great massages!
Hour massage in Canada is 80-85 dollars. That’s the standard. What’s it in the states?
Amrit Baba in my particular state, it's about 60-75 for an hour session
I should work there here people dont want pay 50 euros the hour :-(
Good. That's about what I always give. You are adorable btw! ;)
Wish you were in my area (Fort Walton Beach, FL)... I'm in need of a good deep tissue massage.
I’m finding it hard to understand why a therapist at a chain would only be making $16-20 on a $100 massage. Is everything provided for them? ie: table, towels, oils? Does someone do their laundry? I am honestly curious because to me it is hard to think I’m already paying $100 for an hour and then need to give another $20 to not seem like I don’t appreciate them. I just imagine in a day you would see probably 7 clients on a good day which I have had a hard time getting into places sometimes so it seems like they are fairly booked. Thats $700 a day. Say 2 clients on a bad day. So $1000-$5000 a week is a lot of money even when taking into account the rent, the equipment and the products. I mean let’s be honest. At its basic it’s just a table, towels, lotions/oils and a person. I’m not saying peoples time and abilities aren’t worth anything but $100 an hour is a lot. There are people out there saving lives and working much harder (think very hard physical labor) making $30 an hour and less. I’m not trying to be rude at all. I’m just trying to understand.
I usually tip $40 for the hour
Hi there nice videos
My wife’s a RMT and she won’t accept a tip she didn’t want people to stress
That's how it should be.
I went for a massage and the Asian lady actually asked for a tip after I paid 60 for an hour I gave her 10 then she said she wanted more so I gave her 10 more so she would leave me alone. I'm not going back to her I hate ungrateful greedy people
That's when most people lie and say, "Well, I don't have more" or "I'll come back later", and then just don't come back.
So massage therapists don't get paid 75 dollars an hour? My massage therapist giving me therapy through insurance, said she usually charges 75 dollars an hour? If she is only getting 16 out of 75, where is the rest of the money going?
👍🏾
Well said Spencer ty .
12$ best tip i get 😁 from indonesia
I tip my doctor for looking after my health. I also tip my bus driver for taking me from point A to point B. Who else? Oh yes. The librarian for checking out my book.
You go in Saudi Arabia work massage.
You many tips he he.
I just put the tip in the price so I technically get a tip anyway.
If you can't afford to tip your therapist 15%+ you can't afford the massage.
When I took my mom to a private massage therapist my mom felt so good after the therapy that I tipped $20.00 cash.
I tip when I'm satisfied with my MT. I normally tip 50% of the actual cost of a 1-hr massage if I'm very well satisfied after a session.
Hows ur armwrestling bud. I'd try u out
15%…..
haha nice joke at the beginning
I would tip them 20%
But those madafacka always ask for tips like very straight out
nobody tips me at my job....lol.....
Tipping is just common decency. Massage therapists work extremely hard and long hours, and most chains pay them $16 or $18 an hour, which is insulting. I tip $40 for an 80 minute massage. It’s the least I can do for someone who brings a little peace and relaxation to my hectic life. I see other clients, usually elderly clients, who tell the lady at the front desk they’ll give a 5 or 10 percent tip, and I want to slap them. It’s great and noble that you don’t expect tips, but I have learned over the years that I get the best service at restaurants and the best massages when I tip well. It’s human nature.
Thank you!
When I get a client like you it makes my day and makes up for the assholes that give us nothing! I work really hard and truly want to help people and dont make much which is why I rely on tips!
@@meganburns8602 Calling her bread and butter assholes, how nice and professional.
@@meganburns8602 a janitor also works hard. Way harder than you and does dirty work. I wonder how many people actually tip them. People pay for the services and to expect tip on top of that is ridiculous. Everyone works hard for their money. But not everyone is greedy to be tipped.
I'm in Philippines,. People here do not know . Tip, very disappointed.. heheheh
TOL+ NO SHIT, THE PHILIPPINES IS ALMOST ALL IN POVERTY
$16-$20 per hour session. Wow ! They are not making money
Are you gay or straight?
Jörg B. Regardless, his massage channel is one of the very best on RUclips. Let’s focus on that. Is that fair?
I absolutely disagree with you shouldnt expect a tip. After working a shift and doing 6 massages and you're dead physically get a $5 tip is just a slap in the face. I have so many clients I'd rather not see that regular client. I get it if you have a bad one then you can tip like that but it's so degrading to get $5 or nothing. You should feel bad. If you cant pay$10 or more then you can't afford to get a massage.
In my country no professional of any area expect tips, and I find this tip culture you have in USA absolutely stupid.
Just charge as much as your work, service or product is worth, as much as you're expecting to get paid, and that's it, end of story.
How the hell can someone get angry or think it's degrading and insulting when the client pays the price that was asked?
Set your price right and stop crying and cursing your clients, your bread and butter.
That's sad.
And if you want more money, maybe diversify and/or be more creative, because there's people literally making millions on RUclips posting videos of their sessions, giving tips, doing ASMR massages, relaxation therapies...
@@traysmooth3169 Exactly !! I have seen people get really upset when they don't get the expected tip. Ridiculous
you get a tip if you give the Client a Happy Ending!
Spaaaaaaaaah
Well you do not care for tips and it’s ok, but you should because you need to get some hair implants for your head and stop using the hot.
Just kidding 🤪
