I've been an MT for 17 years and this is pretty much the same exact breakdown that I do. I've also found that if it you get those clients that LOVE extra feet, neck & head work (and there are LOTS of them) they'll be your clients for LIFE.
I have been trained on trained on a British system which consists of 5 minutes per part (Chest, arm, arm, stomach, front of leg, front of leg, back of leg, back of leg, and both buttocks), then 20 mins for the back. At this point the client is asleep or comatose. Thank you for your excellent videos.
This video really help me .I just graduated in october 2018 but I just star working as a massage therapist 4 weeks ago and your videos are really helpful
The head and neck, it's like a mother caress, very comforting. I remember that summer, I had a thing for head massage and I would stop at random hair salon for a shampoo only, just to get a head massage and my hair cleaned at the same time. I prefer more time on the feet though. I remember my first massage, I was 9. When she got to my feet, I freaked out because that area was, along with the neck and armpits, a perfect target during tickle battles, but it felt so good at the same time, I told her it gave me chills to my brain lol. But it's really my trip to Thailand that got me hooked to foot massage. I would get a 30 minute foot massage at the end of the day, it was so affordable. I'm not sure I 100% believe in reflexology, but foot massage has something special to me and it's hard to describe the feeling it creates to the whole body when they hit the right spots, it's like magic, glitters, an electric highway, my wig fly into some unknown dimension...
I was taught 20 minutes on the back including the glutes, 3 minutes on each legs with glutes, 1 min on each foot, 2 minutes on face and scalp, 10 minutes on the neck, 3 on the arm, 1 on the hand, 2 on the torso, 3 on the leg, 1 on the foot. Personally, I never do this. I usually have clients tell me they don’t like the torso done at all or want extra scalp and face and feet, so I usually take from the arms and do the neck work with the face and scalp, or back. I think it’s really hard to think of body parts as separate when I can flow into each one easily.
thank you so much! this is extremely helpful. I just started my career as a LMT and seem to always go over on hour long massages. I do like that when you flip the client over you start back at their feet again. that makes more sense to me than the way we learned at school. we also didn't learn head massage so that's something I find myself needing to incorporate more.
Thank you for asking. I have so many words. Lol Basically I am 3 years licensed, and am way more comfortable. It took asking my fellow massage therapists all the questions, and getting feedback from customers to know that much of what is taught needs to be thrown out the window as soon as you’re licensed. Lol In my y first 2 years of being licensed, I took a bunch of CE classes to build up my confidence and get better training. Always keep learning and get massages on yourself often. Best advice ever.
I agree with the timing of working on various areas however I prefer to do it in a different order. I usually start with the client on their back, I prefer to do face/head massage before I get any lotion/oil on my hands (I have no sink in my room) and I like to start out doing some LDT to the sinuses and neck/shoulder work in this position also. I do enjoy your videos though, as I feel that even someone who has been doing massage for awhile (like me!) can learn new things, we all have specific skills and gifts and thank you for sharing.
Nice pie chart. Come to think of it, i could print it out and make a wall clock out of it, that way i could train better and time my massages correctly. I am a beginner.
Thank you for the video. So, it's ok if we do the feet first and then the head. Could be the opposite also? I mean thinking that head is a cleaner area than the feet
Awesome insight, thank you! What do you think about 1 1/2 or 2 hour massages? Worth it? Also, I would love to see you do a head, neck and face massage.
My school taught us to begin our 60 minute routine with the client supine, starting at the head. We included a face massage and an abdominal massage too. They had us do some assisted stretching in that time as well. What are your feelings on all that? The main reason I’d choose to start supine is to get the abdominal work over with sooner in case they have to use the restroom or something. How often do you even work the abdominal area in your practice? I’m new to this so any LMT with thoughts will be appreciated.
Not a lot of people like Abdominal works. Most clients want to relax and abdominal is not as relaxing. I also start my clients face down. The more you work on clients you will gain your own style.
I usually do abdominal only on request, I am comfortable with it but you can't rush it for it to be effective and most people would rather have focus on other areas instead. I do abdominal area mainly for lymphatic drainage and abdominal massage for things like constipation or irritable bowel, or as part of treating issues with the back (just to have a complete approach) clients have told me it does help.
For me one hour is too little time to do a full body massage. I need at least 90 minutes to not feel I need to rush things. And as a foot reflexologist I can tell you not everybody likes their feet to be touched! I always check before the massage what the client likes and needs, so I don't have to guess. If they don't know, I decide for them based on what they tell me how they feel. My regular clients book often book 90 or 120 minutes massages. But in the end all therapist are different, I'm not saying you should change anything about your routine :).
Same. It’s so weird having just 50 minutes(massage hour) to do a massage. I feel like I’m rushing and I feel like the area I’m working isn’t getting enough attention .
Hi! I am a beginner, really new born one ))) I am interested if you do wash your hands not to have then an oily hair while doing a head massage? Me personally being a client, I really hated that feeling to have oily hair afterwards. Thanks! Great videos! Helps a lot!
Never knew you were in Spokane. I'm working over in Everett. We may see each other on the fitness competition stage sometime. Love your videos, great info.
I start with the client lying on their backs, then spend the rest of the time with the client lying on the tummy so that if there is going to be any drainage, this position helps with this. does anyone else this?
I like it hard but the last massage I got left what feels like bruised ribs or back, she had her whole body weight on my skinny back. I shoukd have said something but i like to sit through the pain to get results. Also a question-; do you do the less on woman?
Spencer, do you have a massage therapist friend or two in Seattle who you can recommend? I know we are far from Spokane but I figured you may have some professional connections in Seattle. Thanks!
HM Massage Thanks guy, I'm hairy myself & during a massage it seemed like it was pulling the hair out(front/back) so thanks again for your advice & if ever in Arkansas give me a shout..... Peace
I prefer any massage medium that doesn’t need a lot of reapplication. Thicker creams usually go a long way with a small amount, and don’t usually have too much of a greasy feel.
I am lucky enough to have my own practice. I refuse to do 60 minute unless it is chair because to me it isn't enough time to do things RIGHT. I do an over all body to warm things up (along with table heater) and then I get into their complaint areas. I make sure head, hands, hips and feet are done well, then shoulders and back. Abdominal only if they need and want it.
You are the best. Question. Re : hamstrings. Awkward for you ? I notice if I say that I get an eye role. Like I’m the pervert. I def have a problem with it. ... I stretch. Just not to embarrass the massage therapist. What’s the best way to discuss your main issues without coming off as a perv. ? Be a reg client idk. I don’t want the reputation but I have siatic nerve issues from work
I’d get a new massage therapist! If my client said they wanted me to focus on the hamstring group I wouldn’t think anything of it. My hams get super sore from deadlifts so I get it!
I would like to start people on their back because it’s probably more comfortable but I was sick of people keeping their head in the face cradle when they flipped over

Wow that's great .. Because that's routinely I had do my massage which something I figured out working as a therapist for about 2 months

How are you doing now? I would love an update. (No pressure. 😊)
I would love to know too. I am about to go to my month 4 distance learning class this next weekend.
Thank you for asking.

I like how u tailor things to make the most out of what time u have. And congrats on 50K subscribers.
You never fail to have great educational videos.
Omg, I needed this. Nothing more stressful for me as an MT than being short of time 😢
I agree with the timing of working on various areas however I prefer to do it in a different order. Subscribed! I’ll be doing my Swedish timing exam soon and I just found your channel and made me want to watch more videos from you!
Nice pie chart. Come to think of it, i could print it out and make a wall clock out of it, that way i could train better and time my massages correctly. I am a beginner.
Can you make a video demonstrating these techniques, and show us the timing? Please and thank you.
Love this video. It's too important. And it was too difficult. To find the time when you are new as massage therapist. Thanks so much for Sare it..
Seriously, you are awesome. Your videos answer to my all questions! Keep it up.
Great breakdown! 😊🙏🏼✨
Another great video, great points, great way to have a base massage breakdown. Of course you can always adjust if they have tight hams or quads. :)
I may have to make a trip to Seattle and request a massage from you! Your videos are so informative!!
Good explanation here!
Do you do these breakdowns in this exact order? finishing with neck and head?
This is very helpful thank you! ❤️🙏🏽
Thank you for the video. So, it's ok if we do the feet first and then the head. Could be the opposite also? I mean thinking that head is a cleaner area than the feet
my teacher likes to start with the head/face so that he knows he has clean hands
You are great .detailed and much help ..you know your stuff.
Awesome insight, thank you! What do you think about 1 1/2 or 2 hour massages? Worth it? Also, I would love to see you do a head, neck and face massage.
I am nailing down my technique, do you have this breakdown somewhere that I can access it?
Hello guys 🙌 i would like to ask what's the easiest way to clean the massage bed after session? Thank u in advance 😊
Damn this guy is very good.
Great video. You are well articulated. Thank you!
Do you have a video with full body massage?

Hi Spencer, what about a 50 min? Any tips for timing?
I do just about the same but i do the feet last, so I dont have to touch the face after working feet.
exactly, me too
Thank you Mr. Spencer. I really appreciate your videos
Great tips, thank you.

MultiMetis I know. Most of my massages are 75 min. I too feel rushed with 60 min. There have been times I've gone over the 90 min🤦

Inna Demchenko Frelih I have a wet hand towel handy, so I don’t grease their hair
Very informative
I get the 5 minutes on the hips and glutes and 5 min on the legs. But what if the client don't want work on the hips?
Are you still using the same routine 5 years later?
Do you not think that it is important to wash your hands after working on the person's feet before you work on their head?
thanks a lot for share HM ¡
Can u post different massage therapy???
Never knew you were in Spokane. I'm working over in Everett. We may see each other on the fitness competition stage sometime. Love your videos, great info.
Thank u another technique again,..
Thanks for this info. I like the way you talk. Can you do an ASMR hand movement/face massage video?
Joseph Daly his earlier ASMR vids are what got me into those types of videos!
I love your intro.
Yes! No one rubs your head. You never realize how tense your face is until someone rubs it.
So knowledgeable ! You need to go out of the road! Or I need to make a trip out west!
I start with the client lying on their backs, then spend the rest of the time with the client lying on the tummy so that if there is going to be any drainage, this position helps with this. does anyone else this?
Thank you for this video .
I had a Deep Tissue massage practical today and I made a passing grade in class.
I like it hard but the last massage I got left what feels like bruised ribs or back, she had her whole body weight on my skinny back.
I shoukd have said something but i like to sit through the pain to get results.
Also a question-; do you do the less on woman?
As a client I like when a massage therapist massages every part . I don't like when they miss areas
Thank you!!!
Spencer, do you have a massage therapist friend or two in Seattle who you can recommend? I know we are far from Spokane but I figured you may have some professional connections in Seattle. Thanks!
Spencer, what's the best advice on doing massage on guys who are hairy without hurting...
Awesome Question, because we hairy guys tend to not like the over use of massage oils.
Rick Waggoner Just use more lubricant. Lotions a bit easier with more hair imo b/c it won't leave the person as oily
HM Massage Thanks guy, I'm hairy myself & during a massage it seemed like it was pulling the hair out(front/back) so thanks again for your advice & if ever in Arkansas give me a shout..... Peace
Alejandro Guerra Villegas exactly bro, thanks for your input
I prefer any massage medium that doesn’t need a lot of reapplication. Thicker creams usually go a long way with a small amount, and don’t usually have too much of a greasy feel.
Thank U.. I've learned so much from ur videos. They are quite calming as well. Keep up the GREAT WORK 😉!
are you in new york

Thank you!
i got it.. thanks for tips..
I agree that many therapists spend too little time on the head and scalp!
👍

Hey Spenser. Do you have Snapchat ? Have some questions :)
My therapist always massages my face as well, though you're right about her spending too much time on the shoulder blades!
Lol meanwhile most of my clients hate their head massaged😭
Hlo
RIP Biggie
Noice.
It's ALL ABOUT THE CLIENT. NOT what the THERAPIST want.
