I really enjoy your videos and you obviously have such a sound process and strategy going forward. Congrats. This year I remain focused on building out my long-term dividend portfolio. I am retired and sold cash secured puts in 2022 (generated $40K in income) to get into 26 individual stocks that I want to own long-term. Options are a big part of what I do to generate income in retirement. However, once I get completely built out I will only sell covered calls strategically on my portfolio because I don’t want to wheel my portfolio. What I like about Covered calls is it’s very passive and you can double your dividend amount consistently.

Happy New Year! I have just made my annual contribution to my TFSA. For the sake of sector allocation and dividend pay months, I will be buying mostly industrial sector and utility stocks as my financial and consumer stables stocks weighting is really high by comparison. That being said, I will still be buying Canadian banks and communications companies in 2023 despite their weighting in my portfolio, just to a lesser degree. It’s kind of hard to argue with 5% plus risk free rate of return on GICs. But I think the uncertainty in equities and economy is what makes for compelling starting yields with upside potential.

Thank you! It’s great seeing your evolution over the years.
    Couple video ideas:
    - what percentage of the way you are to your fire goal…maybe how the percentage changes year by year and how it accelerates with compounding??
    - what dividend ETF you would choose if you had to give up individual stocks. SCHD seems to be the consensus but you could look at top holdings from a few with your unique perspective.
    Have a great week!

Great video Ian! My goal for 2023 is to increase my total dividend payments by 20% to get to $30K/ Annually. Aside from obviously re-investing my current dividend income into more shares across my portfolio, looking at adding to some of my core dividend holdings (CN Rail/TD Bank/etc), as well as increase the significance of covered call ETFs with high yields from just a few % to something more meaningful. Just started a youtube channel last week where i'll be talking more about stocks/investments throughout the year for whoever may be interested! Cheers and happy new years

My goal this year was going to be to focus on accumulating local Singapore dividend stocks. Unfortunately this would mean mostly REITs, but given the interest rate environment I might need to change strategy. Another option is banks, but they’re not my area of expertise and I don’t feel like they’re valued favorably right now - they're cyclical and likely to benefit from the interest rates in the short term, which is pushing prices up. Other companies are usually smaller or don’t have a strong dividend record, which leaves me a bit stumped. I’m still bullish on a couple of Hong Kong stocks and valuations are still amazingly low, but I already have so much China exposure, which feels increasingly risky. I guess in 2023 I’ll have to make it up as I go along.

Ian, how about a 4 and/or 8-week T-Bill ladder vs a CD ladder for your cash. Both of these T-Bills are paying around 4% with state tax savings if you are in a state with state income tax. You can also have them automatically reinvest and turn the reinvestment off when needed. I agree that the I Bonds are attractive also at current rates

    • @ppcian
      @ppcian  2 года назад +1

I like the T-Bill strategy too, for very short-term cash. The challenge is I believe the yields (especially on shorter-duration bills) will drop, over time. So, I’m locking in the higher interest rate for more years with the CDs and longer-term Notes/Bonds. That said, I am using the Bills for liquid cash. Wishing you all the greatest! You answered my question in the video haha I shud have Ben more patient but still JnJ will not be the same. JnJ will be a 100% pharma company. Your comfortable with a pharma company being a core of your portfolio? I can think of 3 pharma companies I would invest in before JnJ pharma, Abvie, Merck, PFE etc
I own JnJ also now and am thinking how to handle the spin-off. The div. will be lower so that’s a concern … I have considered selling the JnJ Parma after the spin-off and buying Phzer with that moneycandcth n growing the Ainu consumer company.. eghhh decisions decisions.

Ian, I understand these are your core, and hold XYLD. What is you opinion on XYLG? I mentioned CLM to you and you never got back to me. I don't thing you understand that the monthly dividend is declared for the entire 2023 at .1228. That is 21%+ to premium, and you can drip at NAV for a 20% discount. CLM has 17 institutional investors that increased their holding in the last few months. It looks bad on paper compared to a stock, but is a CEF w/a 54% reinvestment rate. Holders are reinvesting. This will drive up the premium. Buy 3 shares. It is a few coffees, and trust me. Once you learn this fund you will be in long.

I feel like both JNJ and PEP are just too high relative to the market for me to justify plowing too much money into them right now (but then I'm already heavily into both) because I was plowing money into them when everyone else was trying to cash in on crypto (RIP). Personally I'm looking for very stable companies that are on deep discount. Buy while there's blood in the street and all that.

To come back to a position i already own. I only buy when the prices plunge. They always do eventually. And if you have a big enough array of stocks in your portfolio there is always something on sale at any given time to invest in while biding ones time for the other ones.

I have two types of emergency funds. 1) Liquid cash that I can use immediately and 2) intermediate-term cash that could be used for an extended emergency. Bucket 2 is partially in CDs that have laddered maturity dates. Bucket 1 could hold me over until such maturity dates hit. The key for me is to have a strategy that is robust enough to avoid ever having to sell dividend stocks.

First time seeing one of your videos, and very informative. However, not sure I understand why you picked the "core 4" you did, even with al the analysis. Those are all great companies, but there are so many companies that pay a much higher dividened yields, that are just as strong and stable as yours. There are even a couple dvdnd ETF's that have hiher yields, that is far more stable because their are a basket of very strong companies. That being said, I have been loading up on strong dividend stocks, while they are on sale, especially in my roth, which will generate tax free income in retirement.

My boring non tech recession proof stocks are always at all time highs every year they never go down AZO, DG, DLTR, UNH, HEI, HSY, ROL, no skills, no trading, no guessing, no etf's, no crypto, no Ipo's, no Tesla or any other such nonsense.

Why is SBUX in that list? Anyone who is feelin the crunch in a recession will have to give up the $7 latte.

It costs about 4 cents for the cup and 4 cents for the coffee, when you add up the extras to pay employees, insurance, change the light bulbs in the store etc. it should not cost more than 50 cents for a cup of coffee and of course you have to do all the work, find the extras, napkins, buss the table, heck they stand behind the counter and watch you do all the work, they should be paying you for all the work as a customer that you did, however, I always see many people at the place.

What do you do at 60 when I don’t have 20 years plus to wait??? Not everyone watching your videos is your age.

Probably better to go with a low cost s&p 500 etf or dividend focused etf like schd since you don’t have much time to recover from a bad investment.

Are you working? If not, you should get at least a part time job and or develop a new skill and get a part time or full time job(trade work, trucking, retail job you can work till 70 etc.). Work that until 65-70 and try to save alot and meet with a CFA.

I'm surprised PG isn't in your core 4.
My core 4 would be JNJ, PEP, PG, and MCD.
I'm not a big coffee fan and I feel like it is too niche, but just because I don't understand it doesn't mean I'm right....AT ALL lol

Love your video's, but seriously, drop the intro. It's an Invesing channel, the avrage person doesn't care about watching an intro and just want to get to it. Anyways best of luck in 2023!
