- This is an intermediate tutorial and requires you to be somewhat familiar with Blender.
If you plan to use this for an NFT, please go away.
Rushed this one out a bit, but I hope you still enjoy! If you make one of your own cards, tweet me your results here: / felineentity
Since this issue seems to come up A LOT at this point: 2:10 APPLY YOUR SOLIDIFY MODIFIER
Newer Blender versions hide their apply button in a little drop down on the modifier. If you have problem with the backside of your card in any way, this is most likely your mistake.
damn blender. I love you and I hate you at the same time. I can fix my problem. This was.
Thank you very much for the video and for leaving this comment solving the problem. I subscribe. you are great
I had a problem, the render shows all layers and I cannot switch between them... Help!
What's the difference between applying it and just setting the value?
Thank you! Very well explained.
I had some problems when compositing because I didn't have the render background set to "transparent", so the alpha trick wasn't working for me. Just saying in case someone finds the same problem!
Awesome tutorial man. You made me subscribe. Looking forward to see more from you.
Thank you. Very good and easy to follow.
Wow, this is great stuff!
Watching this without any graphic knowledge. Just cos id like to see how he made it work LMAO
works for EEVVEE?
sup! Im having trouble and i think the best way is to ask here
im trying to make it so this card not only has the impossible space effect on the front, but also on the back but with a totally different model and background inside
I assume i just have to add another mask and the new setting into two new layers within the same file, but im having trouble understanding how to put it all together in the composite tree
any help with this would be really appreciated!
extra question : IF you can add two different "scenes" like i described above, can you add even more? how would that work?
an example of what I mean would be Bobacupcake's pokemon 3D cards
I instantly thought of making a cube with a window into a different world on each face. If I ever get it to work I may try and put a tutorial video together.
So, I made a couple cards using 2D images, can be seen in my videos, however now i have one where i created a scene where my friend's kid is on the Gillette football field (home of the New England Patriots) and everything seems to work just fine, except that my subject and the background in the "cake" layer are kinda transparent now and you can see through them. Not sure why, that didn't happen with my Deku card. Any ideas what could be happening?
ngl I kinda feel accomplished lol. I really appreciate this tutorial. Thank you so much ( thats from the heart XD)
Can someone please help me with this one, i setup everything just like in the video.
But when i render the layers the mask layer also shows the card.
When i disable everything but the mask it shows only the mask.
What am i doing wrong... Please help
I was gonna complain that stuff wasn’t fully explained but it says intermediate 😭
Why I can't find the "Backface Culling" on cycles?
I had a problem, the render shows all layers and I cannot switch between them... Help!
This is a great tutorial. I'm super appreciative. Thank you!! :D
Quick question: How would you comp together several magic cards in the one scene?
You'd essentially have three or more alpha cut outs that need to be comped onto a background. What node would you use to piece that all together?
This would work well as either a holo effect or a Yugioh style soul trap.
How are you splitting the face, if I press "i" and individual, it does not split it
what if i want to rendering a video at 360? how do I hide the back to show it like a normal card back?
New at blender can someone please tell me what keys are being used at 1:25 seconds in to select the loops inside the card. It just selects the whole card for me
You should make a version of this explaining everything for first timers who don't know how to access all the features you're using, like all the shortcuts or where everything is, and I mean like explain where things and stuff are [while] you do it.
Go to the holy donut
@@Project.09 I'm a year late, but the whomst??
Is it possible to export the final result as a glb model?
i cant get the different layer render, it jst shows 1 render with everythng in the scene
why when i try with cycles the card is not transparent?? can somebody explained :)
Can download this template?
wish this worked with Cycles

This video is a great resource! I keep encountering the same issue on 3.0. The mask goes through the whole card front and back. Hiding it doesn’t work the same for some reason even with backface culling. At timeframe 4:38 when I move the “mask” face around, it leaves a hole in the image and you see no material.
Also, the “cake” doesn’t rotate with the card. Any suggestions. Thanks again.
Please help me! when I try to make the front mask that starts at 4:20 seconds in the video i do it step by step the same way but when I push p to separate that area it take out that entire section of the card instead of separation from the back and I cant figure it out for the life of me pleas if anyone knows anything to try let me know! thanks!
any progress?? i stuck here to :)
@@nemeshine turn backface culling on for your material on the back of the card too
you just saved my life
Alr + R resets rotation!
I cannot seem to get the view layers to render separately, when I select the view laters in the render window, it rendered all the layers together. Any suggestions?
10:43 , redo your layers, you probably tweaked with the model and messed with the Scene Collection visibility. I would suggest in making a 4th layer called 'ViewLayer' where you set everything to be visible and tweak anything from there without touching the other view layers.
I am stuck at 1:26 selecting the borders anyone could help thank you
I can select the edges but I take that’s not the right direction
How can this be rendered as a GLTF or GLB file?
How to Camera View?
i Don't know why when i render i still see the mask and it make me creasy for 3 days now. I do everything good (ans i wrote all your tuto to understand, word by word. but it didn't work. I already did this for ten time...
When i'm on Object mode i can't see through the card. But in edit mode i can... F...
Ok ! This is on the render view where i don't see through the card
crazy shit
hey first of all, very good explanation. but I've tried 15 times over and over again because in the end I always did something wrong, the mask layer is not the small square of the map in the end but always the whole map, what am I doing wrong? with compisiting I see the entire map and not just the small viewing window with mask layer
Did you ever figure this out.. Stuck at the same point
Thank you!
after we're done with the tutorial, is it actually possible to simply replace the object behind the card (for example the cake) by another append ? or do we have to redo everything ?
Just replace and rerender and you should be good to go
This is nice
How you export the animation? F12 key don't anything plus when rendering animation it shows individual layers
I got stuck at 3:01 since on the latest ver of blender I can't connect the texture coordinate to mapping vector node and there's only one vector node pls help thanks
you can go to edit > preferences > plugins and search for node wrangler, click the check box. now if you press ctrl T on any node you have selected it will add a texture coodinate and mapping node
Thank you! I’m so grateful to you ❤️⭐️
Subscribed for the free blender outline addon😁
When I render this, the card layer seems to 'blink' its colour, but renders black. I have my cake layer but the card layer is black :/any ideas?
okay i have everything, i just seem to get the composit to work, anyone here can help me, i feel like i am so close to being done , its driving me crazy
How would you use a picture as the background within the card instead of that pattern behind the cake? Or how would you use a 2d image instead of the cake? I've watched this over, and over, and I'm trying to learn.
How do you rescale the object in the size you want without (I) ruining the dimensions? If you change the scale it would ruin the inwards movement proportions. like is there no way to just say i want my card by 1000 x 800
How do I take 2 images (front and back) and make them into a 3d card? Please help
Love This tutorial!, keep up the good works!
exactly what i was looking for. thank you
The cake is a trap card!
lovely tutorial, I have successfully completed the process and my card looks great, however, when I attempt to export as gltf, (nearly) all textures are missing! any advices to get to the correct formatting for export?
Thank you for this awesome tutorial, well explained, ill show you my result, im finisging the shaders!
Thank you for this tutorial... awesome explanation... :D
Awesome sauce tutorial! Is there a way to put another texture on the back of the card?
I have the same question!! Have you found your answer? If so, I would like to know :>
turn backface culling on for your material on the back of the card too
That was tough, but I did it. So much I don't know.
If you're using a newer version of blender,
When the card has spun around 180 degrees, if you notice it is still showing your "CakeLayer" you will need to turn "Backface Culling" on for the material on the "Mask" material too, this should stop this from happening
Saw a lot of comments about this, whilst trying to find the solution for myself!
I had a problem, the render shows all layers and I cannot switch between them... Help!
That is amazing, thanks you very much
This is a nice tutorial video. You're a genius.
Beautiful tutorial. I cannot wait to give all this a try. Short and to the point.
very helpful. thanks
For some reason when I spin my card the background spins with it. How can I keep this from happening? Thanks for the vid!
turn backface culling on for your material on the back of the card too
can you do more video on Trading Cards in Blender plz
The lie is the card card
Amazing tutorial. Tho when I go to the compositing tab, none of my layers are showing. Any suggestions?
have you rendered?
Is there a way to do this in real time? With Eevee I mean.
Not in eevee afaik. There is some stuff you can do in cycles to see it in the viewport, but not for eevee.
@@felineentity Is there a way to cover the mask? Great tutorial by the way, I noticed that the mask here ignores any objects in front of it? I'm trying to create an animation that involves this card trick, a rotating camera and an object that will momentarily block the camera's view of the card. I noticed that the mask will still be seen through any object and reveal the "cake".
@@locallylocal There should be, and it would require either putting the thing covering the mask to be on its own render layer so you can layer it over the mask in the compositor, or if it is in front and behind the mask, rendering it in 2 takes and stitching those together. There are probably a lot of way of doing this.
love this tutorial, thanks so much
the new blender causes the mask to create a full square through the back of the card also. how do I fix that?
turn backface culling on for your material on the back of the card too
Having an odd problem. When I click “Render Image”, it turns out great, but when I click “Render animation” it doesn’t render the Mask Layer. This is odd, as the compositing nodes don’t change, so I don’t know why it works in Render Image and not Render Animation.
Hey, exactly the same here... I'll keep you posted if i manage to resolve that issue.
Well, I don't fully know yet, but rendering an image sequence seems to be tricky and I guess calls some EXR files and some more in depth compositing. So if we are unable to render some PNG image sequences, rendering some FFmpeg video did the trick for me. But still, I would prefer an Image sequence.. :/
At 5.21 .."select mask and press to hide it"...please tell me the key in
H to hide selected objects.
@@felineentity Thank you
Good instructions. I got it working until very close to the end with “mask layer>material1>back face culling”. When I animate, the backside of the card is not solid, rather it’s showing the “cake background” (with no cake). I’m so close. Where’d I go wrong?
It happened the same thing to me, I noticed a problem when separating the mask from the card, in his video, the back part shows when you separate. But in mine, in is hollow, I think that's the problem, maybe it's because this is a different version of blender idk.
turn backface culling on for your material on the back of the card too
What keybind you use at 0:38 to get the "add" menu at your mouse position
Shift + A
Nice! Saw this on Curtis Holts Discord.
I can´t make it work.
The back of the mask is disappearing too.
When it´s facing to the front is perfect, the problem is when it turns.
Any suggestions?
yo, i was having the exact same problem. In the tutorial, he says to have backface culling checked for BOTH materials on the card and mask
Turn on backface culling
I think if you use the object coordinate instead of the generated. You don’t need to center the grad.
Oh! Great tutorial btw! Thank you!!! :D

For some reason, I keep getting stuck around the 1-minute mark. I don't know how to create the loop cut and inset face to only apply to the front of the card. On mine, it applies this effect on both the front and back sides. Can you help me?
It does so for me as well, don't worry about it :)
@@felineentity But when you rotate your card it is a blank blue design. For some reason, my boxes show on the front and the back?
@@brittonwolf9655 @ 15:57 He states to set the MaskLayer > Material > Backface calling (check it) This should stop the mask from appearing on the back of the card
Is it possible to do this in sketchup
No
how can i make glowing colors ?
