- I've taken care of so many autistic individuals from group homes as an ER nurse, and for some reason it always hits funny. So much trust goes into taking care of a non verbal or minimally verbal person, that can not speak for themselves. I always wonder if they are really loved and care for, and if everything is on the up and up. Maybe I'm a little paranoid because I am an autism mom, and fear for his vulnerability. But today I was 100% sure that this group home employee was an amazing advocate for her residents and I didn't have to be!

Kaitlin, I have worked in group homes and in day programs with developmentally delayed adults and I can tell you that I absolutely treasured the many bonds/relationships formed with my individuals. I went above and beyond for those 'guys' every day because, if I were in their shoes, I would want someone to do the same for me. Also because, they are human beings that matter and deserve to be treated well. Like you, I have seen some really not so nice things, but I personally cared for/worked alongside them from a place of love, and I think many of them knew it - that part makes my heart smile 😊 There were definitely also other staff who felt similarly and also treated them well. Not saying it will be easy or perfect, but I am saying there is hope! 💜
I appreciate your blogs. Especially this one. I have autism and I used to live in 2 adult foster care homes until I was 19. That's when I started living on my own. Living with autism is hard. I do have a job that I love that I got all by myself. I also have 2 kitties that I go home to everyday. My oldest cat is my companion/therapy cat. Thankyou for what you do. You're an amazing mom.

This video made me cry. I once was a care giver for a group home, and I lived there for 7 days on and 7 days off . When i would return after being off. It was like i had too start over with training my clients. It got to a point where

Got to a piont where I decided to become a live in. And when I started becoming a full time staff member that cared abtout my clients, getting them to do the things that other staff members we're willing to do. Or just felt like it wasn't in there job description. Because all they wanted was a pay check. I started getting parents to agree that there kids needed too see and believe in other opportunities. So i started taking them on outtings. We went camping for a weekend and they loved it. I found a place where they could express them selves. Whether it was playing softball with the special need community, going to open mic for special needs people. It was a great learning experience for me and has made a better person today
Please check with Family, I worked in a group home we always watch each other and turn in anyone treating anyone wrong and in Oregon they can never work in group homes again
This was a great topic for discussion!!!! With you being an ER nurse I can only imagine what you do see @ work! I remember not too long ago, you sharing a story with us all about a caregiver that kept asking to leave the whole time she was with the person that she had brought in into the hospital. You are not alone. I am waaayyyy older than you and I have been guilty of that whole pre judge stuff. At least you are mature enough to admit that in this case you were wrong. Give yourself some grace on this one. It is a subject close to your heart. Thank you again for sharing. You all are so sweet. I work as a groups home care giver....there is probably bad apples for sure but everyone I work with love our people we support❤ they hurt we hurt

I understand what you said when I was working for special Olympics some of the stuff at the group home didn't care about the special needs adults and it was sad
Yea I’ve definitely whiteness a few people who it’s obviously just a temporary job for them, which stinks. But then there are obviously people who’s hearts are in it like this lady, which was amazing
Totally understand where you are coming from! When I went to a sheltered workshop for a couple years bc I wasn’t quite ready for a job In the community and I saw the abuse firsthand. Also experienced some myself
Yea I’ve seen some pretty disappointing situations that always makes me wonder what happens behind closed doors so now I’m a little paranoid I guess

I recently read an article about the ethics of euthanizing people with dementia. There are so many people that are going to need care that more and more we simply don't have the money as a country to provide that you're right to be concerned. I don't have any suggestions about what you should do about that I can see that discussion digressing to justify killing severely autistic adults that can't take care of themselves. I know that this is going to be extremely upsetting to read but those conversations are happening and if you don't know about it, you need to.
