Your Retro Tech series is like a wish that I had but never asked for which surprisingly comes true! It is very satisfying to watch these high quality gems and it is educational to know the history of them by the one who holds record for having the most multimeter review videos on RUclips! I'm so lucky to have discovered and subscribed to this channel. Thanks 🙏 for everything 😊.
Thanks so much Bhushan! .quality retro multimeters = quality viewers like yourself 😃👍
I own this DMM. Been using it a long time. Recently it started acting very odd, cutting out and not measuring like it should. If I took off the battery cover, it worked fine. It turned out that a retaining tab on the battery cover was pressing against one battery contact, and that contact had become dirty/corroded (the battery never leaked). I scraped the contact with a tiny knife, and tinned it. Cleaned the new solder off with alcohol and put the batteries back in. Back to working perfectly.
Great stuff...You'll get another 30 years out of it too no doubt! It's a classic 👌
Wow you found a rarity in this one and quality NOS too-! Just because this stuff was older through hole didnt make it inaccuratel, they built this rig with quality in mind. I was haunting our 3 local Radio Shacks back in the 70's and 80's looking at gear and buying miscellaneous parts and tools, great memories My very first set of quality stereo speakers came from an end-of-model sale, got a great set of real walnut veneer 100 watt 12 inch three way NOVA-8B's and I wish id never sold them. This meter was a great find.
It's a gorgeous multimeter no doubt. RadioShack definitely had some gems back in the day..glad I was able to add it to the collection. 😀👍 That RadioShack catalog is like a time machine !
Wow, lucky you Darren for been able to get this gorgeous vintage meter in new condition, considering the age of it. Congrats. 👏😃
Thx Radius, It was a real find...I was looking for for about 3+ years for this meter in NOS condition.
M
What a find, you never see anything like that over here, I'm afraid I would have left the test leads in the bag😀
Haha..the devil made me do it..😇 I was definitely tempted to keep them sealed ...
👍
I've had one of these since new back in 88. Still works great. Just don't let the alkaline batteries leak as it will destroy the meter.
Great advice ! Indeed if you don't use it take the batteries out..😀👍
This DMM is a classic, many technical books & manuals show this style of meter. I love the design and the form factor, that time was nearing the pinnacle of manual ranging DMMs. I cant recall who came up first with double offset wheel selector design but notice the choice of three colors to identify the measurement functions like the early FLUKE precision DMMs. I own the other Micronta DMM that one came out in 1990 and remained Radio Shack's flagship DMM for two or three years, I hope we can see a retro vintage electronics on that one soon.
It's one of my favorite RETRO-TECH dmms. The dual selector and interesting color bands scream vintage 😃 I'll be looking at the other dmm in an upcoming episode. 👍
Any idea how much this woulda cost back in the day?
and..."missed it by THAT much"

Hey speaking of vintage meters, I've got a vintage analog meter still in it's original packaging, leads in a bag and all. I'd be happy to donate it if you'd like to do a video on it!
OMG...ABSOLUTELY! Please email me, netplicity1@gmail.com , so I can give you my shipping details ! Thx a bunch 👍
I thought the one I have might be a malfunctioning Micronta 22-185A meter with the LED 3 flashing but I see that's the way the meter is designed to work. Thanks.
Glad it helped 😊👍
Darren you didn't rate the multi meter. How many stars? I usually get interested and buy when you rate the multimeter 4 stars and above🙂. Thanks for the video🙂 have a good one.
Great question...This is part of the RETRO-TECH VINTAGE series, so no star rating for these gems. 😀
@@KeepOnTesting Ok thanks👍🏻🙂
Darren, you don't happen to have a still shot of the schematic do you?
I'm currently getting ready to attempt to calibrate mine, but not sure if I should attack VR1 first, or VR2.
Its reading constantly, both AC, and DC, but its reading consistently wrong in the proper range.....
So my rotaries seem not to be the problem.
Hello Jim
Let me see if I can find the schematic for you. I'll check tonight when I'm back in the lab 👍
@@KeepOnTesting Thanks! This week was the first time this meter has failed me since I got it new in 88'. Pretty amazing to see that you were basically able to buy a new old stock one.

@@JimsEquipmentShed Hi Jim..I just sent it via regular email..Google can be painful at times. Let me know once received. 👍
@@KeepOnTesting Thanks Darren!
Im gonna cry. Lol
I have one of these I bought "back in the day". Hey, how do you calibrate these?
Depends..if it's just Voltage use the vr1 cal pot against a trusted DC source and adjust accordingly 😉 Yes..those trips down memory lane sure bring back some great memories eh !
@@KeepOnTesting Thanks!
I have a similar meter but with no leads! What kind are they?
RadioShack part no. 278-704, banana plug style inputs. I see a compatible pair from a seller on Ebay here : www.ebay.ca/itm/SAFETY-TEST-LEAD-KIT-with-Case-Radio-Shack-New-Old-Stock-/154852598000?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m2548.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
@@KeepOnTesting Thanks! I have a vintage Tenma meter that uses these as well and was never able to figure out where to get them.
They are junk I have a bad one does not work no continuity digital comes in an out total crap.
That's too bad..my experience has been good but there's always a few lemons out there ! 😮
