I got called into my bosses office because I had used social media to insult someone and it had been sent to my place of work. I've spent the last week terrified I'll lose my job. Work have confirmed it will just be a disciplinary since this. I deleted my social media and then saw and watched this video. I feel like I owe it to myself and everyone else to keep this change permanent. I would never dream of saying the things I have said on social media in real life. And although I'm only a week in the change is massive and I already feel a lot better.

Great pre-Lent message. I actually "gave up for Lent" snarky politics last year, even though I had not been a practicing Catholic for decades. Just returned to mass in November, confession in December. Makes a difference, what one chooses to feast upon. Leaves the heart open to hear His voice.

Not to make a lame play on the name of this wonderful podcast (though I'm totally going to), but 'breaking the habit' of wasting insane amounts of time on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram has honestly been among the best choices I've ever made. Deleting my accounts has made me less anxious and depressed. I was constantly panicking about issues I can do little or nothing about, fretting about the state of the world, comparing myself unfavorably to others, and becoming too dependent on strangers' validation or too hurt by their criticism. Hopefully I'm now using my time at least a little more wisely...like apparently by being here on youtube ;)

I deleted Facebook almost 10 years ago. I have an IG account but only follow astronomy stuff (I'm an astronomer). I don't use any other social media (as long as RUclips doesn't count). And even on RUclips, I only follow a small handful of accounts.
But this wasn't always the case. I used to be extremely sucked into social media, and it really messed me up. It made me suicidal because it was an addiction that I couldn't control. Needing that constant dopamine hit made the common beauty of life seem so dull. Your brain gets conditioned to stop paying attention to the world you live in and instead you get addicted to the digital world - often of which never accurately depicts reality.

  • @sablerc

Fr. Casey, this is a good and important message. Social media often does more harm than good, and it is designed to be addictive.
At 3:54 you said, "If this thing is causing you to move further away from Christ, it should be the easiest decision of your life to walk away and never turn back."
At face, this is a good message, but it falls short of acknowledging the power of addiction. It is not easy for someone experiencing addiction to cut it out of their lives. C.S. Lewis did a great job of illustrating this in The Great Divorce with the young man who is tormented by a red lizard that sits on his shoulder mocking him and the angel who offers to kill the lizard. It is imperative to cut out vice from our lives in order to grow in holiness and closer to Christ, but it is far from the easiest decision of an addict's life. Impactful, yes, but far from easy.

I've been only watching videos on RUclips, because it doesn't affect me like the other social medias. My problem is that I'm a person that cares a lot about what others think, so I tend to read comments and watch controversial videos, some of which sometimes include God's existence, Jesus, the bible etc. So I read the controversial comments and sometimes even argue. This is terrible, because it affects my Faith, that is still the faith of a beginner in Christian life. I think I might spend more than 1 month away from all the craziness and try to focus more on God's word rather than what some angry humans online have to say about it

Thanks to RUclips and channels like this, along with my son-in-law's help,
I've become a better Catholic. I chose this faith nearly 40 years ago and have never regretted it. As a website designer, having my phone has been essential, so I can see my work on a smaller screen.

The middle ground I went with this Lent some might find helpful, is to keep the apps but stop"Infinite Scrolling", "Doom scrolling" or scrolling at all in the first place.
I get event notifications and messages from friends and family on various social media platforms, and I'm okay to click on a link or a meme if someone sends it to me to share that laugh or moment with them. It's the solo time wasting scrolling, the thing that affects me the worst, I've cut out.
Only saw this video after, but definitely agree with the sentiment.

This argument is applicable to the advent of numerous electronic devices over recent decades. To quote Groucho Marx, "Television is very educational. Every time someone in my house turns on the TV, I go into another room and read a book."

In the 80s, 90s you had couch potatos, and people wasted their lives watching TV. A cable news station back in the 1990s is feeding you information to make you afraid of those other guys. TV shows giving you a poor body images, and promote a sinful life as something to strive for.
Social media is just a new technology that doesn't solve age old problems.

I got rid of tiktok two days ago when I realised that nothing of it stuck with me even an hour after viewing, let alone a day. The juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

I am spiritually edified by time spent on RUclips and similar platforms. I’m intellectually strengthened by these, as well. I listen to good music and books while driving. I live-stream Mass if I cannot attend irl, I listen to conferences and use email to communicate with distant friends. The internet makes certain administrative tasks easier. As for solely “social” media, I’m not on that at all. I don’t maintain a profile, “follow” so-called “influencers,” I certainly do not post for the general public myself, video, photos, or my personal business! As for gossip, gaming, time-wasting trivia, watching sports, or pornography, these don’t interest me at all, the last listed I find disgusting. So no, I see no reason to give up the internet for Lent. I have other sins, flaws, and excesses that need change or elimination that are not defeated by turning off or disposing of an electronic invention. I wish it were that easy!

I don't use any social media aside from RUclips. On the whole, RUclips for me is a way learn new things. I only learnt of The Chosen series because of Father Casey, a series which has been so wonderful to watch. But I still prefer the simpler things in life. A good book. A walk in the fresh air.

I find that RUclips is the only useful social media for me, because there are so many useful and inspiring channels (of course there are lots that are trash too, but I don't watch them) . I basically find Facebook boring and Instagram mostly a loss of time, I'll surely cut the time on these ones during Lent.

Thank you and congratulations. As a scientist I have been using internet for work, searching for publications and data, since the early 1990s. I do not use social media much, except for ptofessional purposes and mostly RUclips, mostly in faith-oriented material. However even with the latter one has to be very careful. I have come accross valuable material, as well as fringe material desguised as authoritative information which however is designed to bring dissent and division to the Catholic vommunities. Much care and discernment should be the norm...

I am a physicist and still active as a climate scientist. I was blessed with the possibility of hosting a radio program on environmental sciences, Social Doctrine of the Church and faith in Radio Maria, here in Argentina, for almost 5 years, some time ago.

Thank you, Fr. Casey. I live alone and spend a lot of time on RUclips. I have many Catholic channels, but other channels have crept in. My comments on those are in keeping with the Church, but I know that just watching these is wasting time and filling me with non-productive thoughts. I have better ways to proclaim the Church's teachings without infecting myself. I'm unsubscribing from lots of channels tonight in preparation for Lent.

@@patthompson8591 - because fasting in Lent is about learning what we need and what not. Maybe we learn to ditch social media altogether, maybe to use them differently.

It occurred to me recently that I'm essentially addicted to technology. It's a negative feedback loop. I've become hooked on negativity. The thing is that my work, my productivity, is also all online. That being said, I know what I'm doing this Lent.
