- Got a chance to fly to Maui at the begining of 2022 and do some filming with Jon Jon from Local Fishing Knowledge Hawaii and Moonshine Fly Rods. It was a heck of an adventure. Stay tuned for the new video from Moonshine Fly Rods. For the record, I caught this fish a couple days before the filming with Moonshine Fly Rods.
I ventured out to a secret spot on low tide, and walked out 50 yards. The winds were mellow and the sun gave me the best visibility toward shore. I waited about 10 minutes and saw this massive bonefish from right to left between me and the shore. I lined up my cast and places the fly about two pole lengths infront of the bonefish. When the bonefish got close I started a slow strip. I could see the fly come off the rock and the bonefish honed in on the fly. I kept the strip going.
The bonefish opened its mouth and inhaled the fly. I gave a slight stripset and kept the tention on the line. Then it happened. The fish started its run out to sea. Half way to Vermont the line snagged some hight rocks. You can see me walking toward the snag. Luckly the line did not snap. If your ever in this situation, it is important that you get to the snag as fast as possible or risk loosing the fish.
This bonefish is estimated to be between 9 and 10 lbs. Might not look like it in the picture, but I assure you this bonefish is massive. The bonefish ran in the opossite direction about 3 times before I finally landed it. An amazing fight!
Pro Tips:
1) On the Hookup use the hand your holding the fly line to serve as a guide to avoid the line wrapping around the reel. Hold the fly line away from the reel as you guide the line to the reel.
2) Fight bonefish from the reel. Do NOT try to strip these fish in.
3) Remove your right finger from the fly line immediatly.
4) If line wraps around rocks, then move to snag as fast as possible to free the line. If you cannot move to the snag, then slack your line and pray.
