I'm on 437 subscribers and I'm aiming for 500 so I've been experimenting with the thumbnail testing. It's useful, but I feel the thumbnail I think will win always does well.
I tried this when it first came out and was not happy with how it worked out. I received way less impressions than normal which resulted in a much lower view count. I haven’t used it since, now I just do my own A B testing by making a few thumbnails then asking my friends which one they prefer.
Yes, yes, yes!!! Once I started using A/B/C testing my views have tanked and at the end of testing it gives me “no results”. I’m going to test it for 6 weeks more using it and not using it. I’ll keep 3 thumbnails on standby for rotation throughout time.
On an additional note, I think it requires around 5~10k views PER thumbnail in order to come to a pretty accurate decision. Any views below that is inconsistent, due to a small sample size--percentage is not that trustworthy. So if you test 3 thumbnails for instance, you would need 15~30k views in total in order to accurately determine which thumbnail to go to. I tried to upload 3 exact thumbnails and after each thumbnails got around 2k views, 2 got like 37% WT and the last one got 27% WT. Considering they were exactly the same, they should be the same, right? No, it wasn't, due to a lack of sample size. Around 5k views per thumbnail, the gaps started to close, and they were within 1.5% range.
I have had very inconsistent results! If I have a killer thumb I know it at this point and this feature could cause harm! Still useful for things like starting a new series or something to give you that initial data on what style works!
My issue is that it needs hundreds of views to get ANY data. I would like to see the data straight away, regardless of how many views I have had. I have had some tests finish without giving me any data whatsoever, despite having over 100 views. For smaller channels, I don't think A/B thumbnail testing is that useful unless you are getting hundreds of views for every video. I would also rather it was based upon click through rate, rather than watch time, because that is a better indication of how good the thumbnail is.
@@LeaderOfArmourStands I checked out your channel. Your titles and thumbnails is more likely the problem. I just couldn't find one that made me want to click on any of them. Have you thought of doing other types of gaming to make vids out of?
Sometimes I click away from a video and then I cannot find the video because I remembered the thumbnail and not title because it is normally easier to remember but I do think it provides more chance to reach more kind of people because of the differences of their taste to click on something. Thumbnails with to much information are usually bad because it takes more time to process that is why a thumbnail connected to the video would provide a more direct connection and click rate. Max 4 words in your thumbnail or something.
I've tested this out multiple times, and I can confirm that the results of those videos haven't been the greatest, although nothing to extreme. Great vid btw! 😀
@@vidIQ I’ve actually been using A/B/C testing for testing thumbnails for targeting different countries because we have found certain content resonates with certain audiences in different regions. The thumbnails produced will actually have different languages on them and one of those will end up resonating more than the others. Once we know that a certain type of content works with a specific region, we then make future videos with thumbnails based on our previous results.
This is interesting. For me, I usually create 1-3 different thumbnail ideas, and then add them to a mockup of the youtube homepage to see what catches the eye the best. I also ask friends and my community members what catches their eye, and it usually has been quite successful. I don't like the idea of a thumbnail constantly changing. To me, a thumbnail is an integral part of the "identity" of a video, just like it's title, so it is jarring when your favorite video suddenly has a different thumbnail, like it's face got ripped off.
I used it, and it really helped! 💕 I was so curious and had to wait for two weeks, but it actually brought more views after the test ended! 😍 Anyway, I still need to pick the top three most-watched moments from my video retention graph (the ones processed after 2 days) to know where to screenshot, and it really worked! 😄
I've done several A/B thumbnail tests. To me, the test is a guideline and it's really only based on the first two weeks of your video's performance. You may have a thumbnail that is by far a winner vs. two other thumbnails, and that becomes your thumbnail from that point on, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's a great or good thumbnail. It's just the best of the three you're testing. If you're testing 3 thumbnails and one has a high % but the other two have low %'s, that means that 2/3 of viewers are seeing thumbnaiIs that are not leading to many views or watch time. This may hurt your channel in the short term, but once that high testing thumbnail is chosen, it should potentially help your channel in the long run. I did find that you need a minimum of about 100 views to get results. I would love for RUclips to also include the CTR (Click-Through-Rate) for the thumbnails that are tested. This would help us.
It changed everything for my channel it hurt my channel the worst way possible.Three months ago, i used it and my channel has not gained any subscribers since then and i lost 20 subscribers my impression for whole channel dropped to 2k for whole month
Short answer is it's a waste of time. Why would a small channel want 2/3 of the potential audience to see a thumbnail they don't like? Make one killer one that you know says what your video is about and publish it. If you want to experiment, do it with videos that are months old. We experienced our biggest dip in interaction since trying A,B,C thumbnail testing and haven't really recovered since.
I tested A/B testing in my two channels explore bird world and capture room. Both channels video performance and views decreased. I hope RUclips fix this issue soon.
In my experience, using the A/B testing has done nothing but help with exposure. It would seem the more youtube features you use per video, the more potential exposure it can get. Similarly, videos I've put explicit chapter information into seem to get higher exposure as well. It would seem youtube prioritizes videos that utilize as many features of the platform as possible.
I'm really not sure about these A & B testing.Personally I think i could work if its targeted properly, the issue is that we don't know how its tested.
It helps when the thumbnail we spent so much time on doesn’t perform as we expected. But when the thumbnail we make does well then another thumbnail can bring down those clicks
Great vid guys. This is something I was thinking about as well. That "worse" thumbnail in your test being shown could slow down your views. Definitely seems smart to go for one good thumbnail and only use A/B at the right times. And of course, make sure your title is strong!

I’ve seen success with a/b testing. I create 3 thumbnails and every time I think I pick the winning thumbnail I’m always wrong. A/b testing gives me more views and longer watch times.
I see the point of testing both, however do you guys think it would be a waste if time to always make 2 thumbnails? Or do you think just occasionally if your not sure about one thumb to make another?
I think it's a good feature to have for gathering information on which style of thumbnail your current viewers prefer, if it's data you wish to obtain. Is it necessary in order to get views, I would say no. I have seen videos with poorly completed thumbnails that get tons of views 😮.
My test said 'the test finished without a conclusive result' ... BUT 1 thumbnail was 29.3% and another 38.3% ... surely that is enough of a difference to be conclusive? Also, it chose to make the lowest % share as visible to all viewers?
My long form videos can't even use this as they get so little views, but my shorts do really great and a majority of the shorts have gotten me super close to 1,000 subscribers! In context do what works best for you!
I also say RUclips should tell us how many impressions each thumbnail got. Also, how many of your subscribers saw the testing thumbnails for each one. I have 2.27K subs and only 200-500 impressions given out. My subs never get to see the thumbnail, especially since I use comparison testing.

I actually saw a sudden huge spike in views on a video that was stale after I did the ab test. The ab test is certainly causing a movement in exposure in my experience.
I HATE this feature! One of the ways I depend on knowing which videos I've seen or not is by recognizing the thumbnail. When they change, it screws up the whole system! And then displeasure ensues when I waste the time to open the video just to see it's one I've already watched (the red indicator bar at the bottom of previously watched videos is not the best indicator since I find it is often wrong (and I don't even think it is there once the thumbnail changes!))
As a subscriber of a channel, I'll click on my favorite channels videos and watch it, and I find it annoying when it shows up again (and it does show up again a second time on the home page) - Because now I think it's a different video, which of course, I've already watched it the first time.
Random question for vidIQ. When I upload a custom thumbnail to my video, I can see it and also see the custom image on my channel page. But when I search in the youtube search for my videos, not logged in as my channel, it does not show the custom thumbnail and is just a random image from the video on ALL of my videos. Is there a fix to this?
The one video I tried it on did miserably until the test was over, then it started to grow. The very next one got twice the response without the testing first. I won't be doing it again.
The test just simple doesn’t work - if it would test for CTR then yes it makes sense. But if you have viewers watching each time the video until the end - what’s there to test 🤷🏼♂️ I do my own test - if after couple of hours I see way less views than usually - I check my analytics to see if CTR is low - I change the thumbnail and wait to see if this improves the performance. Much more better test in my opinion than what RUclips offers us
I have done it many times over 40 videos and has done nothing but wasted my time making thumbnails. Like a lot of 'Ideas' You Tube come up with , they themselves don't get behind it .
I don't like it. I like making a thumbnail that I like, believe in, and go for it. It's all on me. Any thumbnail will never appeal to everyone. Your topic and video will never appeal to everyone. Make the best thumbnail and video possible and post it.
@vidiq i've been trying to find out if a/b thumbnail testing hurts the video's performance by slightly confusing the algorithm? The algorithm sees the ctr of each thumbnail as it auto flip flops your thumbs back and forth daily. I believe it could cause a high seo performing video to not be reindexed properly by the bots and you find a drop in your search rankings as it may not index your video in quite the same way it did when you first uploaded it? Would the algorithm compare the differences of the thumbnail ctr and perhaps lower or stop giving your video's thumbnail(S) IMPRESSIONS in viewer feeds? Could a low ctr lead to that even within say the same 24hr cycle? Like, large number of impressions that morning and the ctr was 1.9% leading to little or no impressions for the rest of the hours of that cycle because the test group didnt engage it? A similar traffic pattern happens with shorts but I am referring specifically to uploaded thumbnails on longs. so far no one has been that can answer that question. thus "hurting" your videos performance somehow. I have experiened this on some really great videos and met others that felt the same way. talk to me.👂
I don’t know just my opinion. I feel there are too many things to do when it comes to your content and it just gives me too much anxiety. I just told myself to learn from each video and authentically grow while being consistent. I guess it can work for some people though.
I tried testing for 4 videos(ran the thumbnail testing for the full 2 weeks duration) and the views went down for these 4 videos O.o and also the results are also too close to call😂
I've noticed a drop in views. Could see that like me, smaller channel, it's hurting it. I have stopped and views go up. I'm thinking it's not getting enough impressions to give enough of a result because it's a small channel.
I'm not gonna use it. I tried it with the last couple of videos and they permormed worse than the channel average. I have 174 subs atm so the test doesn't even show me percentages, just the winner thumbnail. I used 1 thumbnail with my most recent video that I think it's a really cool thumbnail and it's 1/10 🎉 Or maybe it has nothing to do with the thumbnail and it's just an awesome video 😅
I haven't tried it, but going to I am not very great at editing, being completely color blind is sooo fun when trying to help my son do RUclips lmao idk what I am doing and getting comments for feedback is like nonexistent lol Did manage to get a troll calling me a Bot on our Fortnite channel though 😂 going to have to get a subscription to vid IQ next payday , at least with the free trail was able to get some thumbnails and ideas so thank you for those few days
I believe this feature is not working or available for our channel as we are on 109 subscribers. I need to work on the channel page and make it more attractive 😔 good luck to everyone

I have experiened this on some really great videos and met others that felt the same way. talk to me.👂
Currently on 183 in just under 3 months. Really trying to push for 1k. Hope to get there soon.
I think this feature is useless, I've tried it. You guys better make 1 thumbnail as good as possible
Heck yeah! The BOOST
👍🏻👍🏻
I tried it, but it made my thumbnail quality really bad, like pixelated. And it said 14 days for the results... So I cancelled it.
I’ve been seeing growth on some videos because of it
I don’t know just my opinion.
It takes me a lot of time to make 1 thumbnail
Let alone 3, that I'm supposed to load up and not touch for a month
I'm not gonna use it. I tried it with the last couple of videos and they permormed worse than the channel average. I have 174 subs atm so the test doesn't even show me percentages, just the winner thumbnail. I used 1 thumbnail with my most recent video that I think it's a really cool thumbnail and it's 1/10 🎉
Or maybe it has nothing to do with the thumbnail and it's just an awesome video 😅
I am at 475 subs and my channel kind of died. But I am trying new thumbnails.
13 but I’ll make it 😌
I feel its helped my long form getmore views than usual
No Iam enjoyed
If you are a small channel, the test will carry out for 2 weeks and in yhe end same thumbnail will be selected saying that the test was inconsistent 😂
As well as the other bad thumbnails will kill your stats during those two weeks and thr video will have a permanent FAIL sighn on it.
I don’t use it I believe it hurts the channel views as if it is shown to someone who doesn’t like it it hurts the impression rate where as the different thumbnail could have got that click
