Matthew Janson is a 14-year-old 8th grader at Randolph Middle School in Charlotte. He's captain of his school's National Academic League Team. His particular interest is birds. He hopes to become an ornithologist and would like to go to New Guinea to see the birds-of-paradise. The best place he's been is Hungary.

Matthew will be competing at the national level of the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. Watch the top ten students compete for scholarships totaling $50,000 on the National Geographic Channel on Thursday, May 23 at 7 p.m. The finals will be broadcast later on public television stations.
