Angela, your husband's work on this substantial project is truly commendable. Your remarkable patience is evident, and I can relate to the importance of precision, particularly in such significant endeavors. Your decision to repurpose the wood floor within the house reflects a thoughtful and practical approach. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series and eagerly anticipating the progress. Xoxo 🙋🏻‍♀️❤️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Hi Angela. In my previous home the kitchen had terracotta tiles and large grout lines. (I loved that cottage!) No matter how it was sealed the grout lines were hell trying to keep clean. It's a heavy traffic area and you've a nice big family, I would suggest the skinniest grout lines you can do.

My Dad always had us six kids taking out the nails on the wood. We all have those beautiful memories of working on our home together. I remember pulling electrical cords, Sheetrock and yucky insulation. Wishing you well on your project. ~ Janet 😘

We had an old quarry tile floor laid on dirt with big grout lines and with traditional polish. We ended up taking it out because it was so laborious to clean and with no substantial finish, too porous. I would suggest thin grout lines and a modern seal so you don’t have to work so hard to keep your floor looking good.

I think crystal door knobs are a MUST in every house!😍
Joel is absolutely right about the wood flooring and I'm always tickled to see his little shadow at his elbow.😍
As for the grout lines, make them as THIN as possible, because grout is a weak point and it's maintenance!😝
    Very exciting to see progress!☺️♥️

I'm so pleased you're going ahead and salvaging the floorboards! They will be fabulous, and you likely wouldn't be able to find the same exact width and condition (they'll be gorgeous once they're sanded and refinished) later on. I've noticed over the last few years that new wood flooring is sometimes really inconsistent size-wize and difficult to match with wood flooring that's over 20 years old...It will definitely be worth the extra work now!

I’m addicted to certain HGTV shows, and in every one that I’ve seen involving terra cotta tiles, they emphasize that each tile should be soaked in water at least a few minutes so that they won’t soak up all the grout! Can’t wait to see your finished cuisine!

Oh man, I don’t envy your husband taking up wood flooring! I have done a lot of it and it is not easy. Our family salvaged wood flooring from 8 old houses to use in our 1910 house. It was worth it, but it was a lot of work. That was about 15 years ago, a much younger me!😅

Have you thought about installing the radient heated flooring system under the tile? It's great not as much work as you think. Super inexpensive planer at Harbor Freight just bought one to run my rough cut lumber through to make siding.

How heavy will those tiles be? Are your floor joists strong enough to support the extra weight? My brother is a housing inspector and he has seen instances of people's floors sagging after laying tile in areas that weren't designed for it. Wishing you lots of success!!

Joel is such a hard worker! I love seeing the dynamic between you guys when you work on a project. Also there is a product called Osmo that they use on another YT channel called the Pethericks. I believe that it is natural oil based and I’ve seen them use it for tile and wood and the finish is beautiful. It is not cheap but might be worth looking into for finishing the tile later.

My hubby installed a travertine tile floor in bathroom. If I could do it all over again, I would have made the grout spaces more narrow. Over the years with kids, dogs, the grout has gotten dirty. I've tried many products, using a toothbrush. No luck. If in a future down the years video, could you please consider topic of how to reclean them? Good work, Joel!! Saving the wood floor will give you opportunity for future use.

It is good you can salvage the old wood. My dining room and living room have old wood floors. We rented a sander and then polyurethaned in satin finish. Wood is expensive. We put large ceramic 12 x 12 tiles in our kitchen. I like to style in french provincial/french country too. My kitchen is more country farmhouse.

My mother-in-law had the tomettes in her "new (300 year old) house," in a village northwest of Paris. The old house on the other side of the courtyard was 600 years old. She had no grout between them and they were laid on dirt. She swept, cleaned and used wax when they needed it. They were beautiful!

My hubs and I had this exact same situation/conversation 2 years ago. Our home was built in 1806, but we had similar tongue and groove flooring in our kitchen/keeping room that we wanted to refinish. Suffice to say that previous generations and their peculiar design choices, had left little to salvation beyond billions of tiny wee brad nails (just in case global gravity failed and the floorboards flew upwards on their own). We ended up going with factory finished hickory floorboards (along with large rectangular Italian made slate-effect porcelain tiles). We're super pleased with the result. Your project is coming along splendidly!! Have fun and thanks for sharing!!! Big hugs!!

Subflooring. Oh, make sure it never moves. EVER. We had tiled the kitchen in our old house. Just regular ceramic tiles. Which was fine until one of our daughters fell in love with figure skating and when she was a teenager she practiced her jumps. On that tile floor. Yep, we should have put about a million screws into the subfloor to make sure it, and my tiles, could handle a double axle.
