It requires a tortured soul, and an appreciation for letting yourself get lost in the sauce… true artists are few and far between, and we can only be so lucky as to be exposed to them.
I don't care how many notes Jason plays he is playing the shit out of them all with a ton of soul the entire time! So many haters! Go practice and learn something instead of ripping the guy to make yourselves feel better about yourselves! Best harp player I have ever seen period!
Awesome diaphragmatic control his blow & draw notes are perfection as is his stamina of which I have never seen the likes of from any harmonica musician. He is golden.
I've been there and it was a fantastic evening. Jason is absolutely incredible and I hope he'll get through all the shit that is following at the Moment. My best wishes to moon cat keep on rock'n kid ;-)
J. RicH 😱😱😱 In my personal opinion theres ; Miles Davis ("Time after Time" Live, Ray Charles ( Stormy Monday*Live*) along with others... But I must say You are currently ranked #1(Active) and I would say what really stands out is your personalty.. I Love this $#!+ to pieces ... Not kissing no ass or giving free postage ..Im writing this dam much . at thia time.. That was bad ass.. Nobody cant phase it as they say.... " TOO MUCH J. RICH in that Bean Dip "... This is amazing!! As usual brother , stay solid .
That is awesome! I have enjoyed your videos for some time as well as many of the tips and lessons you have posted. I am getting ready to go to my first open Mic night soon. You are a great inspiration to the instrument! Keep pushing the limits!
INSANE including a pure Butterfield Woodstock quote - anyway this is beyond belief but Jim Zeller hit us about like this in 1974 - minus overblows (Ricci's are the most listenable I have yet heard) - Zeller had speed, vibrato, a Kalamazoo amp with a coat over it, harps soaked in a water pitcher, and he may already have been using tape delay (which fattened tone a bunch at all times) - also played 2 minor positions a lot - used the CBH as did Magic Dick when it came out; Zeller's record is Cartes Sur Table and he was a Michel Pagliaro band member
@surferpan I don't understand your point. The playing was awesome and I was totally in a trance while listening to it. If the audience can't see that, they are the one with a problem.
totally agree with you, people will remember when you touch their heart, supersonic mechanics is not reaching people, they are are impressed but not touched where it counts.
@ElizabethGS you have a healthy imagination, listen to Portnoy, don't get me wrong Jason is truly one of the best on the planet, but overplays and doesnt stop and feel, as much as he could, lotsa pain for sure! Jason Ricci, Carlos Del Junco and Howard Levy in the same club! Olympic atheletes on harp!
@tenbarsteam I don't think music is about "doing the job". Music should be sometimes surprising and open, and it can't be if theres a "right way" to do it. Playing slow and playing fast are diferenft expressions that say different things, some may not like one or the other, but for me is what music is about. I think Jason does that, he just expressing himself in different ways, and I really enjoy it. (What is true is that some people just play fast to show off, but this is not the case).
Personally I don't get off on that fast technical stuff. I just can't see the point of doing thousands of triplets and scales for minute upon minute. It's like listening to a 5 minute drum solo. The slow bit at the beginning was excellent. Live music is about communication with the audience and most (apart from the harp players) will drop out if you go on too long. I appreciate that it's clever stuff though but just not my bag. Why play 10,000 notes when 3 will do the job?
@surferpan Sorry - but you're SO offbase it's amazing. You obviously have never once been to a JR & NB show. Most of us commenting have and know JUST how the interaction between Jason, the band and the audience took place. You're blathering just to feel important and no doubt you've convinced yourself you're correct. You're not. You have absolutely NO knowledge of what went on between Jason and his audience and the band. Each played/interacted beautifully together. Clueless.
A well constructed and thought provoking response jen riggs but the facts is after the fourth minute, this just gets boring. You've got to admit that. It's like wacthing and listening to someone doing their scales.
Like to see him play with the band, instead of the band backing him and his antics up. But, since he is the draw I suppose the band does whatever Jason wants the band to do. They just let him go on his tangents. Up and down the scale and playing his overblows with a vengeance. He's got good technique, but the speed or adrenaline has taken over his performances. Solo artist. Doesn't need a regular band. They must be over it. Just travel town to town, side show and pay a local band to play chords
I didn't even hear the audience clap while he was in his lead riff, which was spectacular. He's got incredible abilities, but stage presence, interaction with the audience is non existent. I don't think he can identify with anyone. Everyone needs to be able to identify with Jason. Performing is an interaction with the audience. This is more like a circus act. Spectacle.
Jason needs to play music and stop being a spectacle. It's gone to his head, it's in his performance etc.. he's got talent, but it's overshadowed by his extreme abilities. If he could harness that power, energy and put it in a method performance that people can enjoy, dance to without feeling like they are in a circus I could dig it. Sure, it's good for the first hour or two, until you figure out his gig. He's about pushing the envelope with his abilities. like to see him sing, play and dance.
Hey bro? You ever been to one of my shows? My guys play as much or more than me man... I let 'em GO!!! I got my show case tune once or twice a night (which are the ones people usually upload) as my boys get there's to...Check out some other videos. That being said my new band is much more into songs than even soloing these days. I normally don't reply to comments like this but you said a few kind things too so I thought you might actually dig it in context.
I am a harmonica player, and Jason is my favorite harp player ever. In a live context it's awesome to see such a performance. How many harp players could do something like that? Very few, if any. As the man himself said, once or twice a night is totally cool. I've seen so many of his performances with his band, those are awesome musicians, and they usually get plenty of time and opportunities to share the spotlight, but Jason is obviously the main attraction.
I will never understand how this level of mastery is possible.
It requires a tortured soul, and an appreciation for letting yourself get lost in the sauce… true artists are few and far between, and we can only be so lucky as to be exposed to them.
Im a harp player and have been playing over 35 years. Jason Is from another planet.
I don't care how many notes Jason plays he is playing the shit out of them all with a ton of soul the entire time! So many haters! Go practice and learn something instead of ripping the guy to make yourselves feel better about yourselves! Best harp player I have ever seen period!
you know who else was criticized for too many notes? Mozart...
Know who else, Miles Davis. Ricci is incredible.
He is on a different level, one all of his own. Simply incredible.
Awesome diaphragmatic control his blow & draw notes are perfection as is his stamina of which I have never seen the likes of from any harmonica musician. He is golden.
What amazes me is all of those notes are in his mind. I think Little Walter would of been so amazed at this.

John English how’d it go?!
Dat man sure can blow!!!!
I've been there and it was a fantastic evening. Jason is absolutely incredible and I hope he'll get through all the shit that is following at the Moment. My best wishes to moon cat keep on rock'n kid ;-)
Jason was born with a couple of extra lungs,,,he can hold and run the scale like no other since pat Ramsey
Again, great original music from Jason. Like no one else.

Man..Jason is awesome...he's very creative.
Just amazing

how can someone keep playin after watching this? seriously
Der Hammer! Wie kann man nur so Bluesharp spielen!?!?

FANTASTIC - he really is PLAYING
Hi Jason, Incredible. Explore more sounds.
@surferpan I don't understand your point. The playing was awesome and I was totally in a trance while listening to it. If the audience can't see that, they are the one with a problem.
Fantatstic :-)

SUGAR, I miss you AND Dane misses you from the Bucks Blues to Warmdaddy's......You are my mentor.......................
I hope Jason is doing fine. He acts like no one other.
💡GooootttDaaayyuuummm ! ! ! !
Просто феноменальна швидкість!!! Про нього можна сказати, що він народився з губною гармонікою в руках.
Stratosferic!
estou encantada com esse cara!
Unbelievable! Awesome! Surreal! Hedrix on the harp! Ricci has no equal, he is in a league of his own. Wow, there are no words!
and this is just a slow blues harp solo
8:35 your fadda would be proud...marrone
damn......
@ElizabethGS you have a healthy imagination, listen to Portnoy, don't get me wrong Jason is truly one of the best on the planet, but overplays and doesnt stop and feel, as much as he could, lotsa pain for sure! ricci awesome
You say that like Buckethead is some amazing, revolutionary guitarist...
Nice J
Anyone know what key harp at the beginning?
He is litterally cupping the harmonica
@Thirsty58 of course you do. I was referring to the speed: jason likes to play fast, although it's a slow blues.
@StefanosArapoglou
I know what you are saying.. I guess it gives you something to strive for... when i'm 175 years old..
not relaxing to hear on.......tak learn with litle watwr you can if you will
Wow
Legitamately sounds like he is shredding an electric guitar at times and then sounds like the teacher from the Peanuts at others lol
Wow! Didn't know harps could do that...
woooooooooooooow
Ok, so what key is he using? Maybe a Low D first then another key after using the coffee cop? Anybody know?
@tenbarsteam I don't think music is about "doing the job". Music should be sometimes surprising and open, and it can't be if theres a "right way" to do it. (What is true is that some people just play fast to show off, but this is not the case).
I believe he's using a Low Eb then a regular Eb harp
@surferpan, are you deaf? I heard the audience clapping at 3:21
playing with the cup makes the tone sound a little framptonish, like it
: treble hook on the changes :)
Though i'd have to agree it is a little much at the end, either way good player, and teacher
What's the effect he has on his microphone to make it sound almost like an electric guitar?
I heard he blows them out and puts wood on the inside to warm up the tone if that helps at all.
Monsterdrumma oh right, are you sure there is no electronic effect on the mike?
Chorus, distortion, and reverb .
I still think Jason is Awesome at what he does! he's like the Jimi Hendrix of the harp,IMO..
at 7:02 i thought i somehow fast-forwaded the video..

Rick Miller why the hell would they be clapping while he’s playing
Buckethead is a very good good guitarist. You sound like you think your better than Buckethead on guitar....

Good comeback.BTW, you a fuckin incredible. First time I heard you, I threw away all my harps.
