The last transhumant goatherds of Señorío de Molina

Located at the northeast of the province of Guadalajara, Molina de Aragón is a treasure to discover. Their villages, full of life during the summer, take us to the Middle Ages.
The geographical conditions of the Alto Tajo and some villages of the former Duchy of Medinaceli, contributed to the formation of a very original pasture system since ancient times.
The countriside of Molina has excellent deciduous oak forests, stubble field and sabinars that produce very good grasses for goats during the summer season but are very cold during the winter.
In the head of the Alto Jalón the sabinares and the holm oak predominate. They are a type of warmer and evergreen mount that produces good pastures for goats during the fall and winter season.
These circumstances motivated that for generations there were transhumant movements of entire families of goatherds who moved with their goats to the Soria wintering villages.
People of Establés, Rat, Plums, Aragoncillo, Selas, Ablanque, Ankles, Anquela, Mazarete, Concha, Anchuela, Canales, Luzón and other villages moved to Codes, Mochales, Judes, Chaorna, Montuenga, Sagides or Iruecha, the latter belonging to the provinces of Soria.
There was the circumstance that, as a result of these transhumant displacements, many mixed marriages between people of both territories originated during the 20th century.
The last goatherds who carried out this practice were originally from the town of Canales de Molina, and each year they rented winter pastures in Iruecha.
With the loss of this cattle activity, the traditional sheepfolds of this territory disappear little by little.
With an adequate agrarian policy in each town there could be several open houses.
