I no longer worry about “wasting” my good supplies. I bought them to use, and so I’m using them! I used to worry a lot about what to paint, and I’ve given that up too. I realized that I paint because I enjoy the process, so as long as I’m enjoying myself, it really doesn’t matter what the subject is, or if there’s any clearly defined subject at all!

      Yes! Supplies are for using!
Thank you for mentioning picking a subject. That was never a one of my personal biggest blockers but it is for many people!

@@LeeAngold I’ve also decided that swatches count as a subject! Sometimes all I really need is to play with color. :)

I hadn't painted much during the last half of 2023. When I started up again a few months back, I was rather frustrated with some basic practice I was doing. Then I realized that it was a left over sheet of Fabriano "fatpad" (the 25% cotton) mixed in with my last few sheets of Fluid 100% cotton. It makes a difference for me. So I purchased a couple pads of Arches, the Fluid just ran out, but I admit to a little anxiety about breaking the Arches out. :-). I was also stingy about paint at first, then I noticed how long it lasted, so I got over that.

That's great! It's also worth noting that watercolour paper does "go bad" over time. Humidity cycles over a couple years or more make the sizing run or sink further into the paper, leaving it patchy and uneven. Even old good paper can be yucky if its been sitting for a while. All the more reason to not "save" the good stuff for later.

I don't paint very realistic, but I do notice that the best way to convey depth and so on is to get a nice, usually subtle, change in colour. The relative difference seems more important than the absolute colours.

I also try and color match perfectly but now u think i have the beginnings of understanding why this isn’t necessary. Thanks

I'm so glad this was helpful! It is honestly such a weight off to start painting without worrying about mixing enough of an exact colour match :)

Love the video AND your beautiful work! I especially agree about the cauliflowering and texture stuff, and not trying to be perfect with the water control every time. I paint organic subject matter like you do too, and some of that texture just looks so darn good in the end. I also hesitate to use my paper, especially for practicing mark-making or something where I don't get an image at the end. But those are things I absolutely have to practice to warm myself up, so I'm trying to get used to using more of it without stress. Having a cheaper cotton watercolor sketchbook, that really helped me to tackle this problem. Then, ironically, I get so relaxed, that I produce some of my best work in those sketchbooks! lol I am sure other artists out there can relate!

The texture/cauliflowering thing honestly blew my mind when I finally realized it. I had just gradually stopped worrying about water and embracing big messy cauliflowers. It took a viewer commenting on a livestream they wished they had "amazing water control" like me for me to clue in my perspective had radicaly changed (the painting in question was full of ragged edges and cauliflowers)
Your sketchbook sounds amazing, great to hear you found a solution that helps you dive into painting fearlessly.
