- The morning of 8th January 2024 saw all of the BBC's SD services on satellite shut down. Here's how it happened.

This was just for satellite, SD is still going on Freeview…
also, there were no digital standard definition signals in 1936, if any at all. The BBC started airing in digital in 1998 I believe.
Sd is still on freeview
You think for a service where the people have to pay their bills as required by law, the BBC could afford to have SD channels just in case anything goes wrong with the hd ones.
If they can't, where the heck is the money going?
If something went wrong with HD ones what makes you think SD ones would work? SD channels on satellite are redundant as 90% of equipment has been able to receive HD feeds for years
@kreuner11 SD requires less compared to HD meaning its a good backup. It's similar with Radio having FM and AM.
@@ccateni28 Most of the Time the SD stream IS only a downscaled HD stream
So of the HD stream IS going Bad thé SD goes too
AM/FM are made from a unmodulated signal so this make sense on radio not tv
As technology progresses we are forced through transitions of turning off the old. From the 405 line switch off in 1985, the analogue in 2008-2012, the sd in 2024 and the possible change over to internet based television in the future.
Makes me wonder if CBeebies was the channel they were looking at when pulling the plug given it’s the only one that wasn’t in the middle of a programme when it happened.
It would honestly make the most sense, wouldn't want a screaming toddler at 11 in the morning because Bluey disappeared from TV haha

This is why we have in the U.S. a requirement for local channels the ability to receive signal from an antenna. That way local news and weather alerts are available at all times.
Antennas are still used in the uk under the service "Freeview", The bbc shutting down sd channels dosent affect Freeview at all.
This was only the satellite service, Freeview SD is still operational.

BBC Parlament SD Was also Switched off And in case for those of you guys who knows where the message's background music comes from Its from Surge By Carl Matthews
The BBC SD closure loop displays until 26 March 2024 and that means BBC SD channels goes to black by then and was removed from Sky SD on 26 March 2024

Edit: eventually worked out its satellite only
this service has now closed. BBC services on satellite are now available only on HD-capable equipment. as your equipment only supports standard definition transmissions, you now need to upgrade to HD-capable equipment to continue to receive BBC services.

The colours used in this SD closure screen reminds me of that 'generic' BBC downtime filler (used after CBBC closedown before 7pm, leading up to the return of BBC Three back in 2022).
I had hd only anyways, so I didn’t get the message, but if this happened at night and I had sd then i would be crying because I’m weak

That's only for satellite. BBC SD still available on Freeview.
BBC SD began in 1998,
(Digital TV)
It was analogue before then, which was all shut down by 2012, which took a few years to complete in different regions.
And it will soon to switch from SD to HD in Freeview as part of DVB-T2 HEVC switch.

BBC SD Satellite channel feeds were cut and merged into a joint feed at 10:54, i think they were gonna do this at 11:00 but it went 6 minutes early so technical work can be done, the BBC SD feed will be switched off at the end of March, this is when the BBC channels will be removed from all SD Satellite EPGs.
This all happened on my 26th birthday

Why are they doing this?
Times moving on. Standard Definition is now obsolete, with 4K being the new/future standard and 1080p (High Definition) being the standard for the past decade.
Pretty much what Loogi said and plus it is the BBC's idea way to save money (because they refuse to air advertising)

It didn't got affected.
Freeview remains unaffected. However, freeview does not hold the capacity for a full HD switch over.
Freely is on its way, which could be the service that replaces freeview or could someway be implemented with the service.
If you have freeview HD, which could most likely already have,
BBC HD channels are available to which they could in future close their SD service here too.
