I remember the U and PG warnings fondly. Would’ve been too intimidated to step on an 18 title due to the ‘red’, ‘adults-only’ component. 15 titles weren’t allowed either growing up except few-and-far-between, like MATRIX and SWORDFISH, was about as far as I would go in the early years of my life. 12 was here-or-there.

    • @NumaanTahir

Same right here. I was always scared to go for other 15 or 18 rated titles other then matrix or GTA. But when I finally did step out i became less intimidated by the logos and just saw them as reference for what kind of content it may have.

I did watch some more adult stuff, but it was never from Warner bros. So, when I found ghost ship, I thought I'd found the holy grail, I finally had something that contained new words, New images, even a new voice. Apart from that, I never felt the need to watch the movie again because i just wasn't interested in it as much as other movies.

I remember how movies were quite strong for a PG back then. As the 12 rating didn’t exist until 1989 for cinemas, and 1994 for VHS, films were often cut to fit a the PG rating for home video, and despite the cuts, they were still pretty strong, especially Arachnophobia, the Jurassic Parks, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Mrs. Doubtfire, The Addams Family (original & Values), and others that were released after 1994, like Batman Forever and Mission: Impossible still had a PG rating. If films were made like this today they’d definitely get a 12 rating.

@@leafman24 I just found this interesting Interspecies Reviewers was originally rated TV-MA(which would be like hard 15 or 18 in the UK) for the first 3 episodes, but only the censored version, similarly in Australia it was MA-15+ censored but re-rated to [banned] on DVD.

I also remember some called Valkyrie Drive Mermaid "Soul Eater:Rated R" but in Germany they are both rated R(16). Okay well the first half of Soul Eater is rated 16 and the second is 12 (since they don't have a 14 like we do in the US). Similarly it's rated 15 with some 12 episodes in the UK, but even in the US(as well as other English speaking countries) the manga is rated OT-16+) Can you call something an R rated version of something else if the book is already R rated?

The video rating for 15 is still retained. The main reason as far back as when it first came out on video was when Catwoman puts the aerosol cans in the microwave. The BBFC was particularly strict with imitable techniques during the Ferman era, but the 15 was upheld for video even after Ferman left.
There was a 12 version with the scene cut later on, but was reinstated with the Blu-ray with the rating raised to 15.
Also, when Batman Returns was first released on video, there was no 12 rating for video and cuts were not viable for PG, so a 15 was the only way to release it on video. It wasn't until around 1994 when the 12 was introduced for video. Look at how Robin Hood was cut up for a PG on video for instance. It wasn't just the "F" word that was cut either.
