  • The Magical Book (French: Le Livre magique ) is a 1900 film by • Georges Méliès ; listed as film number 280-301 in the Star Film catalog. Méliès uses stop-motion to make objects and characters appear and disappear. The drawings we can see in the book are the work of Méliès himself; in fact, he was also an excellent illustrator and caricaturist.
Synopsis (00:06) The film begins with a magician (Georges Méliès) leafing through a giant book in which various characters from the Italian Commedia dell'Arte are illustrated. Using his powers, the magician animates them by bringing them out of the pages of the book. The first to come to life is the Captain (00:27), followed by Harlequin (00:38) and Pierrot (00:45). All the characters seem to be very friendly to each other, but when the magician conjures up the beautiful Columbina (00:56), all attentions turn to the girl, creating havoc. The magician is forced to summon Pantalone (01:17) who helps him get everyone back in the book. Only the recalcitrant Pierrot (01:58) remains outside, who doesn't want to know about going back to his page, but finally he too is locked in the giant book.

The Commedia dell'Arte is a form of theater that emerged in Italy around the mid-1500s and gained popularity through the 17th century. Unlike other theatrical forms of the time, which were scripted, Commedia dell'Arte relied heavily on improvisation. A hallmark of Commedia dell'Arte is its stock characters, each with distinctive costumes and masks that made them immediately recognizable to audiences.

Verso la fine, quando il libro cade addosso a Méliès si vede un braccio con un vestito bianco sulla sinistra… chissà magari era dell’attore che interpretava Pierrot🤔🤔

Probabilmente un piccolo errore di montaggio
