  • Lower Manhattan Survivor Pam M. and retired NYPD World Trade Center Recovery Worker Rita P. share their personal stories of September 11th in their 9/11 Tribute Museum presentation of We Were There on stage at the National September 11th Memorial Museum.
Pam worked 2 buildings away from the World Trade Center as an attorney for the New York City Law Department on 9/11. Emotionally and physically exhausted from traumatic events that she had experienced just weeks before, she was able to find the strength to get herself and her coworker to safety during the attacks. Pam credits that very strength she found on 9/11 to help her get through a later tragedy in her life--the stroke and long-term hospitalization of her husband. Looking back on the events from that day, Pam has found a greater appreciation for the people that she has in her life who bring her absolute joy, and encourages listeners to see life as a gift worth living.
Rita was a Sergeant for the NYPD on 9/11. In the months after, she was among the hundreds of dedicated police officers who searched through the World Trade Center rubble for remains at Fresh Kills landfill. Now a flight attendant and fulfilling her dream of travelling the world, Rita talks about the horrors she experienced at the landfill, the fulfillment she found in being able to give families even a little bit of closure, and the impact 9/11 had and continues to have on her life.

I wish they could double the amount of time for each person to tell their story.

This lecture series is a great thing. Wonderful intimate glimpses into the horrifying corners and ordinary spaces of that day. Brave citizens casting aside privacy and stage fright to share with the audience needed historical knowledge.

It’s important to know every aspect of what happened that day. People on the west coast have their stories, we all do. The key word in United States is united !

Fresh Kills land fill. What an unfortunate name, I'm sure it isn't spelled like that but that is what is sounds like. The a policeman to the little golden Buddha, what else was taken that might have unwrapped a mystery.

it's actually spelled exactly like that... Its a corruption of the Dutch "Kille" which roughly translates to channel or riverbed.

Seems to me that calling the landfill where they looked for human remains. the "Fresh Kill Landfill" is a bit insensitive.....no??

      @beachbum200009 4 года назад +14

That place and name is decades old and has nothing to do will 911 until they sorted stuff from ground zero.
‘Kill’ is a Dutch word for stream.
      Hope this helps.

New York is definitely an iconic city
but the cost of living is way too much
landlords have been taking advantage of anybody who wants to live there
by charging them as much as they possibly can for rent
i also heard that a lot of the alleys between the buildings smell like shit, because of all the homeless people crapping in the alleys
not to mention that the other thing is that the people that live in that concrete jungle are basically isolated from nature
because they're surrounded by concrete, and have to breath the exhaust fumes that engulf the entire city
    for these reasons?
the rent to live in New York should be drastically reduced
a 1bdr apartment should cost $485.00 per month

Wishful thinking. I bedroom go from 1400 to 2400. 2 BEDROOM are 3000. Everyone is moving out. Bad Mayor not doing anything. Crime is at all times HIGH. COVID 19 are still KILLING people. NYC IS ONE BIG MESS. I SEE MOVING TRUCKS LEAVING EVERY DAY.

  • @jefffuehr366

i know they had good intentions
but i don't think the people who was searching through the rubble, looked good enough
because they were under too much pressure to clean up the rubble / get rid of it
kinda like the conveyor at the landfill that she was talking about
now i know damn well that they couldn't have possibly had time to do a good search
because the people that were loading the debris on the conveyor was probably like "cmon.... we need to keep this thing moving
there's a lot more where this came from".
if the fresh kill landfill was where they took most of that dust, debris, and rubble?
then i would like that area of the fresh kill landfill searched again
because now we got plenty of time
because there's no way that the bones from hundreds of different people just vaporized into thin air
I'm quite sure that they could find lots of volunteers who wouldn't mind doing that

Most of it didn’t go to the landfill. She said a third of it did.

I would even move to New York for as long as I have to, and volunteer my time and energy just to look through it again ! I'm so pained by the fact that 1100 of people's remains are still missing ,and are beyond deterioration..so sad 🥺

Thank goodness someone else said it. It feels like the Judith Show and it’s starting to get on my nerves. I want to hear the people talk and I don’t need a quick rundown of each individual speaker. Let them have the floor and tell their stories.
