    'Church' was first released on the 'Guernica' EP on 9 Dec 2020. This realistically means that HAL-CA was at most 17, and Miyu 18 when they wrote it. (HAL-CA b. 2002.11.23, Miyu b. 2002.03.12).
    It blows my mind that they can write such a beautiful and mature piece of music at that age. But with this band I am used to having my mind blown 😀
    As always, another great reaction from Ryan👍

    It's so refreshing to hear very young talent like these individuals who are so far beyond the norm extruding such tasteful and moving melodies, what happened to the west in terms of this type of talent? My guess is lazyness is one avenue, maybe lack of inspiration, but Asterism has never ceased to inspire me with their music, it's good to see you share this with folk's who may have never heard or would never hear them if not for people like yourself.

    One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I've listened to this dozens of times, both this version and the album one. All three of them are amazing, but Haruka draws so much emotion and intensity out of her guitar that I am completely dumbfounded. I now own a Pacifica because of her. Hands down my favorite guitarist. And no, they most definitely do not need a singer!

    The whole Guernica EP (and later Guernica+ album) is a masterwork IMHO. Their maturity is impressive too, there's an interview where they speak about the meaning of the historic war drama of Guernica - at 19! and they totally know what they're talking about!

Hal-Ca can still shred the sh** out of her guitar, but compered to the beginning it's not all about high speed shredding anymore, so much more feel and atmosphere in her playing and Miyu is just an incredible creative and tasteful bass player. 3 piece and so much sound - just amazing.

    Thanks so much for doing this Ryan. I think until you see a selection from Ignition, Guernica+a and Animetic you can't really see the full awesomeness of this band. Check out Yunagi from Ignition, it is basically Jazz Metal. So is Kyouran Hey Kids from the new album. Their range of styles and techniques is just amazing, not to mention that Hal-Ca composed this music, and Gunfire and Dawn that you have already listened to. I know the other band members contribute a lot but I am pretty sure Hal-Ca is the main composer and arranger. It is truly amazing.

    Hal-Ca gave me Hendrix vibes when she started painting with that feedback. I couldn't agree more with what you said about Miyu being the bass player and rhythm guitarist; sometimes he's like Miku and MISA all rolled up into one. Mio on the drums was killing it, too, especially those stabs out of that snare roll at 4:21 or so (I hope I used the right terms).
    I saw on Instagram that they recently had their first live stream. Archive tickets are available now, and it looked like HAL-CA was doing some lead vocals with the brothers doing some backing vocals. I don't know if that was a cover or an original, but it didn't sound bad!

  • @dtoby8199

    I really don't understand the people that demand Asterism include vocals. They can convey just as much emotion or even more than some bands can with vocals. I also really love the melodies Hal-ca comes up with on her guitar.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 2 года назад +12

      I agree, although a good chunk of the songs they played this weekend did have vocals (4 or 5 tracks I believe). The archive is still available until September 16th on t (witcasting after that, just censoring myself before youtube eats my comment). Most of them were good and I enjoyed them, but I think one of them was too high for Hal-ca's vocal range although that one was around the end of the set, so that might have been it. Both Hal-ca and Miyu did a good job on the vocals in general imo.
      So I am ok with them sprinkling a song with vocals in every once in a while, but I do prefer them being an instrumental band since I love instrumental music and they are so extremely good with their instruments.

      @@lonerangerak5232
      I agree, but they are clearly experimenting with Hal-ca doing vocals and Miyu doing some backup vocals.
      The fact that they do these songs live (on multiple occasions now) isn't a coincidence and while I personally hope they don't go overboard with them and rather have them not use vocals at all, I assume it is ultimately their own creative choice. Let's just hope Amuse didn't have too much influence on them starting to use vocals, but the Asterism members did seem to be enjoying themselves doing those songs from what I saw during that live streaming show.
      I just hope it's not going to be a full album with only tracks with vocals on them because while I did enjoy some of those tracks, they were less technical to my ear. To me them being an instrumental band sets them apart from the rest and it's actually what drew me to them (that and their crazy skills). But they clearly do already have 4 or 5 tracks with vocals on them ready to go and it's ultimately their decission.

    • @ricklarsen7189
      @ricklarsen7189 2 года назад +4

      Hal-ca herself explained it best saying that no matter where they go, when they start playing people understand. No translation is needed.
      Now they have a few songs with vocals. That’s just a natural course of evolution.

    Ryan mate!
    Greetings under a sky promising a sudden explosion what with another typhoon coming!
    To think that Fukuoka, one of the toughest regions in Japan with hard-nailed women and arguably the most macho men in the archipelago, can produce not one but three virtuoso at the same time...
    I have a theory about this song and its name "Church" (note that Haruko wears a cross). Kyushu Island (which includes Fukuoka Prefecture) has the highest population of Japanese Christians in Japan, and I would not be surprised this is the message already knowing their knowledge of history as explained in Guernica album. Being myself an agnostic, I am not entitled to judge but I do have a great respect for their music whatever the inspiration!
    It is only a start of a very long career!
    Best regards,

But how about we go back to the very beginning?
    Haruka got her first guitar at age 10, and at 11 she was introduced to the Miyu and Mio when they were all competing at Yamaha's 8th Music Revolution (which is a national talent competition in Japan). The year after, they competed together as a group (although under Haruka's stage name HAL-CA, and not yet as Asterism), where they won both the Audience Award and one of the three Outstanding Performance Awards with the song "Rising Moon". They did release an official music video for it a few years later, but here is where it all stared; with the 9th Music Revolution in 2015:

To your point on the bass fingering and tapping; Miyu's style kinda reminds me a little like Claypool/Flea mixed with Pastorius/Clarke. at LEAST as good as them, if not better as far as a band composition goes. The miniscule imprint of this band physically has NOTHING to do with their gargantuan sound!! Part of that is Miyu and part of that is Mio. Without them filling in empty spaces......tastefully......Asterism just wouldn't be as good.

      @@RyanMear I totally agree. While I absolutely love Misa and she's my favorite, her bass isn't as melodic. I'm not sure if she can handle anything bigger than her 5-string bass though.
      Asterism works the best as 3-piece band imo, Miyu plays bass like a guitar, which still has the bass sound. If they were 4-piece or 5-piece, I don't think he'd be able to sing with bass like he does often.
      In their slow pieces it almost sounds as if Hal-ca and Miyu are doing duets with Mio complementing it.

    I love the tenacious guts of Asterism. But for them to breakout of the jammin' instrumental trio format and play with the likes of a Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, or Guthrie Govan, etc. and the bassist and drummers at that level, they'll need to do something different. Something bigger. And in there current format, that only leaves the songs. The songs have to be stronger. Even though Asterism has been around for a few years, I still consider them at the beginning of something. I feel if they are to move into a new realm of emotion-grabbing excellence, that journey will be ridden on the strength of their songs... yet to be written. Thx, Ryan!

      I do not agree with you there. Their compositions are, to me, right up there with Vai and the like.

      I'm sorry. I was so excited to see this video that I took the liberty of writing to say that I sympathize with you; I think ASTERISM is a three-piece band with a really great sensibility.@@RyanMear
